  • The development of bars and sediment sorting processes in the braided channels with the mixed grain sizes are investigated experimentally in this study. The sediment in the steep slope channels discharges with highly fluctuation. However, it discharges with relatively periodic cycles in the mild slope channels. The characteristics and amplitudes of the dominant bars are examined by double fourier analysis. The dimensionless sediment particle size decreases as the longitudinal bed elevation increases. However, the size increases as the longitudinal bed elevation decreases. As the dimensionless critical tractive force in the surface layer ratio to the force in the subsurface layer increases, the surface geometric mean size of sediments and the dimensionless sediment particle size decrease. This means that coarse matrix is formed with the dimensionless tractive force by the sediment selective sorting.

  • In this study, the effects of heat and radiation on the degradation behaviour of fluoroelastomer under simulated normal operation and a severe accident environment were investigated using sequential testing of gamma irradiation and thermal degradation. Tensile properties and Shore A hardness were measured, and thermogravimetric analysis was used to evaluate the degradation behaviour of fluoroelastomer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the structural changes of the fluoroelastomer. Heat and radiation generated in nuclear power plant break and deform the chemical bonds, and fluoroelastomer exposed to these environments have decreased C-H and functional groups that contain oxygen and double bonds such as C-O, C=O and C=C were generated. These functional groups were formed by auto oxidation by reacting free radicals generated from the cleaved bond with oxygen in the atmosphere. In this auto oxidation reaction, crosslinks were generated where bonded to each other, and the mobility of molecules was decreased, and as a result, the fluoroelastomer was hardened. This hardening behaviour occurred more significantly in the severe accident environment than in the normal operation condition, and it was found that thermal stability decreased with the generation of unstable structures by crosslinking.

  • The CATR(Compact Antenna Test Range) is a testing facility which is to provide the uniform plane wave by using the reflector. As the ripple of the uniform plane wave caused by the diffraction rays at the edge of the reflector, serrations are attached at the edge of the reflector to minimize the ripple of the uniform plane wave in the CATR. The diffraction field of the serration is normally analyzed by the Fresnel diffraction formula which is expressed as the double integration, and the structure of the serration is expressed as Fourier series to apply the double integration of the Fresnel diffraction formula. In this paper, the novel shark-fin shaped serrations which have the height modulation of the adjacent serrations are proposed. And the triangular serrations and the novel shark-fin shaped serrations are compared to confirm that the performance of the quiet zone by the shark-fin shaped serrations is better than by the triangular serrations. It is also confirmed that the novel shark-fin shaped serrations which have the height modulation of the adjacent serrations are lower ripple than which have the same height of the adjacent serrations. Accordingly, the novel shark-fin shaped serrations with the height modulation can be used at the edge of the reflector to provide the uniform plane wave in CATR.

  • In this study, a governing differential equation for the bending problem of orthotropic rectangular plate is drived. It's exact solution for various boundary conditions is presented. This solution follows traditional method like Navier's solution or Levy's solution that transforms the governing differential equation into an algebraic equation by using trigonometric series. To obtain a solution by Levy's method, it is required that two opposite edges of the plate be simply supported. And the boundary conditions, for which the Navier's method is applicable, are simply supported edge at all edges. In this study, it overcomes the limitations of the previous Navier's and Levy's methods. This solution is applicable for any combination of boundary conditions with simply supported edge and clamped edge in x, y direction. The plate could be subjected to uniform, partially uniform, and line loads. The advantage of the solution is that it is the exact solution as well as it overcomes the limitations of the previous Navier's and Levy's methods. Calculations are presented for orthotropic plates with nonsymmetric boundary conditions. Comparisons between the result of this paper and the result of Navier, Levy and Szilard solutions are made for the isotropic plates. The deflections were in excellent agreement.

  • As a part of the short-period variability survey (SPVS) at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory, we obtained time-series BV CCD images in the region of Cyg OB3 association centered on the open cluster NGC 6871. The observations were performed for 18 nights from September 5, 2008 to September 1, 2009. We found 15 short-period variable stars in the region. They are ${\delta}$ Scuti type stars belonging to the local spiral arm, Orion spur. Among them, only two stars were previously known, and the rest are newly discovered ones. In this paper, we have performed a multiple-frequency analysis to determine frequencies of the 15 ${\delta}$ Scuti type stars, using the discrete Fourier transform and linear least-square fitting methods. One of the newly discovered variable stars is a double-mode ${\delta}$ Scuti type star with the fundamental and the first overtone modes, and two are high amplitude ${\delta}$ Scuti stars.

  • Carbonate green rust (CGR) and sulfate green rust (SGR) commonly occur in nature. In this study, CGR and SGR were synthesized through co-precipitation, and their formation mechanisms and physicochemical properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement showed both CGR and SGR with layered double hydroxide structure were successfully synthesized without any secondary phases under each synthetic condition. Refined structural parameters (unit cell) for two green rusts were a (=b) = 3.17 Å and c = 22.52 Å for CGR and a (=b) = 5.50 Å and c = 10.97 Å for SGR with the crystallite size 57.8 nm in diameter from (003) reflection and 40.1 nm from (001) reflections, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) results showed that both CGR and SGR had typical hexagonal plate-like crystal morphologies but their chemical composition is different in the content of C and S. In addition, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy analysis revealed that carbonate (CO32-) and sulfate (SO42-) molecules were occupied as interlayer anions of CGR and SGR, respectively. These SEM/EDS and FT-IR results were in good agreement with XRD results. Changes in the solution chemistry (i.e., pH, Eh and residual iron concentrations (Fe(II):Fe(III)) of the mixed solution) were observed as a function of the injection time of hydroxyl ion (OH-) into the iron solution. Three different stages were observed in the formation of both CGR and SGR; precursor, intermediator, and green rust in the formation of both CGR and SGR. This study provides co-precipitation methods for CGR and SGR in a way of the stable synthesis. In addition, our findings for the formation mechanisms of the two green rusts and their physicochemical properties will provide crucial information with researches and industrials in utilizing green rust.
