  • Korean academic libraries are facing serious space shortage problems due to an inability to accommodate for the rapidly increasing number of printed materials. Despite the current situation, Korean academic libraries have largely focused on impractical applications of the new library paradigm, using technology or management programs to improve the quality of research and learning environments of the university. However, such improvements would be fruitless without first resolving the space shortage crisis. In order to make realistic improvements to the quality of academic libraries, this study used questionnaires to employ the opinions of librarians currently practicing at such Korean libraries. Survey questionnaires about types and causes of space shortage problems, library facility expansion plans, expected effects of expansion, frequency of and reasons for furniture relocation, and tight spaces needing improvement were distributed to selected 4-year college librarians through Google Drive. Analysis of survey responses indicated that library space shortage was largely responsible for the hindrance of research and learning environments. Furthermore, it reflected the urgency to secure book storage space.

  • This paper presents the development of tactile sensor systems for robot hand which are truly usable, robust, reliable and cheap system. The sensor incorporates multiple sensing subsystems for detecting distributed contact forces and surface characteristics. The fabrication and experimental evaluation of the tactile system and its electric interfaces are described. The results indicate that the system provides reasonable performances for practical applications requiring manipulation with tactile feedback.

  • Laser scanned lidar data record 3D surface information in detail. Exploring valuable spatial information from lidar data is a prerequisite task for its applications, such as DEM generation and 3D building model reconstruction. However, the inherent spatial information is implicit in the abundant, densely and randomly distributed point cloud. This paper proposes a novel method to organize point cloud data, so that further analysis or feature extraction can proceed based on a well organized data model. The principle of the proposed algorithm is to segment point cloud into 3D planes. A split and merge segmentation based on the octree structure is developed for the implementation. Some practical airborne and ground lidar data are tested for demonstration and discussion. We expect this data organization could provide a stepping stone for extracting spatial information from lidar data.

  • Electrical transmission and distribution networks must withstand an occasionally abnormal condition such as a fault, with prejudicial consequences for the line, transformers or generators. And the improvement of reliability and quality of the delivered power from an electric utility motivates the development of new technologies in power applications. As a part of these studies, the usefulness and utility of a superconduction fault current limiter(SFCL) are shown. The SFCL is applied to 22.9KV three-phase power system and performed short circuit studies. The verified quench characteristic of SFCL is adopted for fault simulation and the results are compared with those of system which have not SFCL.

  • In this paper, a model for an inventory whose stock decreases with time is considered. When a deliveryman arrives, if the level of the inventory exceeds a threshold $\alpha$, no stock is delivered, otherwise a delivery is made. It is assumed that the size of a delivery is a random variable Y which is exponentially distributed. After assigning various costs to the model, we calculate the long-run average cost and show that there exist unique value of arrival rate of deliveryman $\alpha$, unique value of threshold $\alpha$ and unique value of average delivery m which minimize the long-run average cost.

  • We consider a nonparametric AR(1) model with nonparametric ARCH(1) errors. In order to estimate the unknown function of the ARCH part, we apply the stationary bootstrap procedure, which is characterized by geometrically distributed random length of bootstrap blocks and has the advantage of capturing the dependence structure of the original data. The proposed method is composed of four steps: the first step estimates the AR part by a typical kernel smoothing to calculate AR residuals, the second step estimates the ARCH part via the Nadaraya-Watson kernel from the AR residuals to compute ARCH residuals, the third step applies the stationary bootstrap procedure to the ARCH residuals, and the fourth step defines the stationary bootstrapped Nadaraya-Watson estimator for the ARCH function with the stationary bootstrapped residuals. We prove the asymptotic validity of the stationary bootstrap estimator for the unknown ARCH function by showing the same limiting distribution as the Nadaraya-Watson estimator in the second step.

  • The salient features of UWB(Ultra WideBand) networks such as high-rate communications, low interference with other radio systems, and low power consumption bring many benefits to users, thus enabling several new applications such as wireless universal serial bus (WUSB) for connecting personal computers (PCs) to their peripherals and the consumer-electronics (CE) in people's living rooms. Because the size of multimedia data frame, WiMedia device must transmit the fragment of MSDU. However, when the fragment of MSDU is lost, WiMedia device maintains active mode for the time to complete the transmission MSDU, and there is a problem that unnecessary power consumption occurs. Therefore we propose new power management scheme to reduce unnecessary power consumption of WiMedia devices in the case that the fragment is lost.

  • This paper introduces a high efficiency bidirectional resonant converter using an additional LC auxiliary circuit for dcdistribution applications. The LC auxiliary circuit operates as a variable inductor and the additional LC circuit helps to increase the effective magnetizing inductance, thereby reducing the turn-off and primary circulating current. A 5 kW bidirectional converter for dc-distribution system is implemented to verify the validity of the proposed method. The experimental results show the high efficiency characteristics of the proposed converter over the wide range of load in both direction of power flow. The maximum efficiency of the proposed system was 98.1 % at 3 kW.

  • In this paper, the authors present a row dynamic route planning by Q-learning. The proposed algorithm is executed in a cellular automation based traffic simulator, which is also newly created. In Vehicle Information and Communication System(VICS), which is an active field of Intelligent Transport System(ITS), information of traffic congestion is sent to each vehicle at real time. However, a centralized navigation system is not realistic to guide millions of vehicles in a megalopolis. Autonomous distributed systems should be more flexible and scalable, and also have a chance to focus on each vehicles demand. In such systems, each vehicle can search an own optimal route. We employ Q-learning of the reinforcement learning method to search an optimal or sub-optimal route, in which route drivers can avoid traffic congestions. We find some applications of the reinforcement learning in the "static" environment, but there are ...
