  • Natural frequencies and mode shapes are two important modal data which specify the system. If the real system and FE model don't have the same local physical parameters, there will be a difference between modal data from real system and FE model. Because there is little difference in displacement mode shapes measured by an accelerometer, displacement modal update based on mode shapes including measurement errors may not be successful. In this research, strain mode shapes are used as modal data because the strain mode shapes measured by strain gauges are more sensitive than the displacement mode shapes with respect to the change of the parameters concerned in FE stiffness matrix...

  • Digital twin technology has been actively developed to monitor and assess the current state of actual structures. The digital twin changes the traditional observation method performed in the field to the real-time observation and detection system using virtual online model. Thus, this study designed a digital twin model for a beam and examined the feasibility of the digital twin for bridges. To reflect the current state of the bridge, model updating was performed according to the field test data to construct an analysis model. Based on the constructed bridge analysis model, the relationship between strain and displacement was used to represent a virtual model that behaves in the same way as the actual structure. The strain and displacement relationship was expressed as a matrix derived using an approximate analytical theory. Then, displacements can be obtained using the measured data obtained from strain sensors installed on the bridge. The coordinates of the obtained displacements are used to construct a virtual digital model for the bridge. For verification, a beam was fabricated and tested to evaluate the digital twin model constructed in this study. The displacements obtained from the strain and displacement relationship agrees well with the actual displacements of the beam. In addition, the displacements obtained from the virtual model was visualized at the locations of the strain sensor.

  • A new damage detection technique using static displacement data was developed, in order to assess the structural integrity of bridge structures. In conventional damage assessment techniques using dynamic response, the variation of natural frequencies is intrinsically insensitive to the damage of the bridge: thus, it is usually difficult to obtain them from the measured data. The proposed detection method enables the estimation of the stiffness reduction of bridges using the static displacement data that are measured periodically, without requiring a specific loading test. Devices such as a laser displacement sensor can be used to measure static displacement data due to the dead load of the bridge structure. In this study, structural damage was represented by the reduction in the elastic modulus of the element. The damage factor of the element was introduced to estimate the stiffness reduction of the bridge under consideration. Likewise, the proposed algorithm was verified using various numerical simulations and compared with other damage detection methods. The effects of noise and number of damaged elements on damage detection were also investigated. Results showed that the proposed algorithm efficiently detects damage on the bridge.

  • As civil structures are exposed to various external loads, it is essential to assess the structural condition, especially the structural displacement, in every moment. Therefore, a visually servoed paired structured light system was proposed in the previous study. The proposed system is composed of two screens facing with each other, each with a camera, a screen, and one or two lasers controlled by a 2-DOF manipulator. The 6-DOF displacement can be calculated from the positions of three projected laser beams and the rotation angles of the manipulators. In the estimation process, one of well-known iterative methods such as Newton-Raphson or extended Kalman filter (EKF) was used for each measurement. Although the proposed system with the aforementioned algorithms estimates the displacement with high accuracy, it takes relatively long computation time. Therefore, an incremental displacement estimation (IDE) algorithm which updates the previously estimated displacement based on the difference between the previous and the current observed data is newly proposed. To validate the performance of the proposed algorithm, simulations and experiments are performed. The results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the computation time with the same level of accuracy compared to the EKF with multiple iterations.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of low back pain(LBP) and pelvic displacement on foot orthosis. Before and after experiments were designed to compare the effect. 21 LBP patients who were the subjects diagnosed of applying foot orthosis for 3 weeks after, investigated about pelvic obliquity angle, displacement of ilium, lumbo-sacral angle by x-ray test which is one of pelvic displacement tests, visual analogue scale is used for LBP measurement. The result show the followings; First, Pelvic obliquity angle was significantly reduced after applying foot orthosis compared before using it(p<.05). Second, Displacement of ilium was significantly reduced after applying foot orthosis compared before using it(p<.05). Third, Lumbo-sacral angle was significantly reduced after applying foot orthosis compared before using it(p<.05). Fourth, LBP was significantly reduced after applying foot orthosis compared before using it(p<.05). This study tries to suggest new LBP treatment to reduce pelvic displacement by apply foot orthosis. In conclusion, foot orthosis reduces pelvic obliquity angle, displacement of ilium, lumbo-sacral angle and also decrease LBP. Further more, It needs of biomechanical study which can recognize relation between foot arch and pelvic displacement. This study will serve as a clinically useful data for diagnosis and treatment of LBP and biomechanical analysis of lower limb.

  • Based on the field measuring data obtained from excavation sections in Inchon International Airport project, the relationships between the horizontal displacement of sheet-pile walls and the deformations of soft ground around the excavation were investigated. The horizontal displacements of walls according to supporting method are largely occurred in order of anchors, anchors with struts, and struts. The depths of maximum horizontal displacement are varied with supporting systems. If the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity of maximum horizontal displacement are respectively developed less than 1% of excavation depth and 1mm/day. When the stability number shows lower than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are respectively developed less than 2.5% of excavation depth and 2mm/day. Also, when the stability number shows more than ${\pi}+2$, the maximum horizontal displacement and the velocity are rapidly increased.

  • Recently, the lateral displacement of the passive piles which installed under the revetment on soft ground is very important during the land reclamation work along the coastal line. The revetment on the soft clay develops the lateral displacement of the ground when the revetment loading is exceeded a certain limit. The lateral displacement of ground causes an excessive deformation of under structure itself and develops lateral earth pressure against the pile foundation as well. Especially passive piles subjected to lateral earth pressures are likely to have excessive horizontal displacement and large bending moment, which induces structural failure of pile foundation and harmful effects on superstructure. The subject of study is to investigate the later displacement of pile foundation during the construction of container terminal at the south port of Incheon. Actual field measurement data and finite element method(FEM) by AFFIMEX Ver 3.4 were used to analyze the displacement of pile and the vertical settlement of soft ground. This analysis was carried out at each sequence of construction work.

  • The suspension elements like primary coil spring, yaw damper, body to body damper are core parts of high speed railway bogie and the faults relating to these elements are reported recently. Thus, this study is started to analyze the displacements characteristics of suspension elements of high speed railway rolling-stock for the purpose of preventing the faults and developing the maintenance technology for suspension elements like spring and dampers. For this purpose, we made a plan to measure the displacements of the primary coil spring, yaw damper and body to body damper in actual running condition. We developed the measurement device to measure the longitudinal displacement and angular displacement of suspension elements and installed this device to test suspension elements. Test to measure displacements of suspension elements is conducted in service line of high speed railway. The displacement data which is acquired from the test with actual vehicles was analyzed for its maximum displacement depending on the track sections. As a result of analysis, we obtained the displacement trends occurring with the sections and valuable results like maximum values and the displacement distribution.

  • The opening of high speed railway upgraded our land transportation speed limit, causing lots of changes including living and culture and also paving the way for stepping up the railway technology. However, it is also true that we had a limit to adopt the existing railway system structured for 150km/h to the new structure requiring a higher speed of approximate 300km/h due to technological, based on the time and experience. More importantly, heading toward a step of operating such a high speed railway system, it has been practically and quickly proposed that the railway needs high speed railway engineering, maintenance technology of parts of the vehicles to have a stable maintenance foundation and localization of major parts. Therefore, this study was intended to research the actual displacement characteristics in runningg on an actual track for the purpose of developing the protective and maintenance technology of springs and dampers, which are core parts among suspension elements of a high speed railway vehicle. For this, it was researched the actual vehicle test and its interpretation centered on primary spring, which is used for the suspension system of a bogie, body-body dampers and body-bogie yaw damper. Also, to analyze the displacement characteristics of suspension system in the actual conditions of high speed railway vehicles, a vehicle‘s dynamic characteristics was analyzed and interpreted. At the same time, a tester for measuring the actual displacement of such suspension elements was designed and attached to actual vehicles, to measure the displacements that occur in running it on the Seoul-Busan line, one of major lines serviced by KTX. The displacement data gained from the test with actual vehicles was analyzed for its displacement distribution depending on the service sections and frequency, with which the valuable data necessary for any potential breakdown or maintenance in the future could be obtained.

  • The paper presents a new short-term dynamic displacement estimation method based on an acceleration and a geophone sensor. The proposed method combines acceleration and velocity measurements through a real time data fusion algorithm based on Kalman filter. The proposed method can estimate the displacement of a structure without displacement sensors, which is typically difficult to be applied to earthquake or fire sites due to their requirement of a fixed rigid support. The proposed method double-integrates the acceleration measurement recursively, and corrects an accumulated integration error based on the velocity measurement, The performance of the proposed method was verified by a lab-scale test, in which displacement estimated by the proposed method are compared to a reference displacement measured by laser doppler vibrometer (LDV).
