  • The purpose of this study is to investigate both the fundamental and some higher natural frequencies and mode shapes of compressive members resting on the linear elastic foundation. The model of compressive member is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such members subjected to an axial load is derived and solved numerically for calculating the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The Improved Euler method is used to integrate the differential equation and the Determinant Search method combined with the Regula-Falsi method to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. In numerical examples, the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are considered. The convergence analysis is conducted for determining the available step size in the Improved Euler method. The validation of theories developed herein is also conducted by comparing the numerical results between this study and SAP 90. The non-dimensional frequency parameters are presented as the non-dimensional system parameters: section ratio, modulus parameter and load parameter. Also typical mode shapes are presented.

  • For large structural eigen-analysis, the whole structure is divided into some partitioned structures and through synthesis of partitioned structural model the eigen-data of structure can be obtained. In that case, eigenvalue problem consists of semidefinite mass matrix form because of displacement constraint condition. In this work the eigenvalue problem is considered by means of several method, determinant search and null space reduction method.

  • A review of shows that past research has focused predominately on foreign market entry strategy issues in relatively well-established firms. These studies have either ignored venture firms or have failed to treat these firms separately. Only recently, researchers have broadened their search to include aspects of the foreign market investment of the venture. The purposes of this study are to identify and explain the impact factors such as ownership specific advantage, transaction cost, and location specific advantage on the choice of foreign market entry strategy for venture firms. To find the perceived the foreign market entry strategy and determinant factors, 130 venture CEOs from the computer and communications equipment industries were asked to describe their venture's foreign market entry strategy through 17 questionnaire items on competitive method. Using factor analysis, the six determinant factors were categorized. To test the relationships between the foreign market entry strategy and factors such as ownership specific advantage, transaction cost, and location specific advantage, the data collected by questionnaire from 92 ventures. The main results of this research are as follows. First, the factors of ownership specific advantage have partially significant impact on the foreign market entry strategy of venture firms, Second, the factors of transaction cost have significant impact on their foreign market entry strategy. Third, the factors of location specific advantage have significant impact on their foreign market entry strategy. This study has produced evidence to demonstrate that the foreign market entry strategy profile of venture firms can be distinguished from those of relatively well-established firms. An expanded study would allow for stronger conclusions regarding the relative explanatory power of individual variables in the method. Additional research is also needed to examine other determinant variables connecting foreign market entry strategy.

  • Optimal sensor placement techniques play a significant role in enhancing the quality of modal data during the vibration based health monitoring of civil structures, where many degrees of freedom are available despite a limited number of sensors. The literature has shown a shift in the trends for solving such problems, from expansion or elimination approach to the employment of heuristic algorithms. Although these heuristic algorithms are capable of providing a global optimal solution, their greatest drawback is the requirement of high computational effort. Because a highly efficient optimisation method is crucial for better accuracy and wider use, this paper presents an improved simulated annealing (SA) algorithm to solve the sensor placement problem. The algorithm is developed based on the sensor locations' coordinate system to allow for the searching in additional dimensions and to increase SA's random search performance while minimising the computation efforts. The proposed method is tested on a numerical slab model that consists of two hundred sensor location candidates using three types of objective functions; the determinant of the Fisher information matrix (FIM), modal assurance criterion (MAC), and mean square error (MSE) of mode shapes. Detailed study on the effects of the sensor numbers and cooling factors on the performance of the algorithm are also investigated. The results indicate that the proposed method outperforms conventional SA and Genetic Algorithm (GA) in the search for optimal sensor placement.

  • This study explores the free, out-of-plane vibrations of horizontally circular curved beams. The differential equations governing the free vibration of such beams, including the effects of warping and rotatory inertia, are derived and solved numerically. The Runge-Kutta method and the Determinant Search method combined with Regula-Falsi method are used to integrate the differential equations and to obtain the natural frequencies, respectively. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio, the stiffness parameter, and the warping parameter. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be used practically for the design of curved member systems.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and the first critical loads of tapered columns. The ordinary differential equation governing the free vibration for tapered columns under compressive axial force is derived. Three kinds of cross sectional shape are considered in the governing equation. The Runge-Kutta method and determinant search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equation and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. Additionally, the bisection method is used to determine the critical loads. In numerical examples, the effects of compressive axial force on the natural frequencies of tapered columns are investigated varying the end conditions. The first critical loads of tapered columns are determined on the basis of dynamic concepts. The first critical loads of tapered columns are determined on the basis of dynamic concept. The effects of cross sectional shapes are shown and some typical mode shapes are also presented.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of water tower with a relatively small footing. The water tower is modeled that the column carrying a container is supported by a rotational spring at the base and is of constant cross-section, with a weight per unit length of column axis. The column model is based on the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the governing differential equation and to determine the critical values(critical own weight. and critical buckling load), respectively. The critical buckling loads are calculated over a range of system parameters: the rotational stiffness parameter, the dimensionless radius of container and the own weight parameter of the column. The relation between the rotational stiffness parameter and the critical own weight parameter of the column is analyzed.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and mode shapes of tapered beams under tensile axial force. The differential equation governing planar free vibration for tapered beams under tensile axial force is derived as nondimensional form. The three kinds of cross sectional shape are considered in differential equation. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equation and to determine the natural frequencies, respectively. The hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped, clamped-clamped and constraints are applied in numerical examples. The lowest four nondimensional natural frequencies are reported as the function of nondimensional tensile axial force. The fundamental natural frequencies are presented when section ratios and nondimensional axial forces are varied. The effects of cross sectional shapes are reported and some typical mode shapes are also presented.
