After Disaster Impact Assessment(DIA) Program was particed, the wide variety of hydrological data are estimated by introducing the concept of critical storm duration to calculate the stormwater impoundments as the alternative of increasing runoff due to many developments. Critical storm duration is varied by a lot of hydraulic structures, drainage characteristics, temporal distribution of design rainfall, return period, and runoff models. In this study the methods of estimating the proper volume to design the stormwater impoundments are proposed to determine the required volume by comparing and analyzing the maximum stormwater impoundments in accordance with the impoundment volume and rainfall duration by using the concept of storage ratio presented in the existing studies. The methods of determining the critical storm duration of design rainfall which cause the maximum load from the runoff hydrograph will be studied as analyzing rainfall-runoff using the various runoff models and observed data.
Current cities encounter various types of water problems due to rapid urbanization and climate change. The increasing significance of urban water problems calls for the establishment of resilient alternatives to prevent and minimize social loss that results from these phenomena. As a background research for establishing resilient infrastructures for the mitigation of urban water problems, we evaluated the robustness of structural alternatives for urban flood as a representative case. Combining the robustness index (RI) and the cost index (CI), we suggested the robustness-cost index (RCI) as an indicator of the robustness of structural alternatives, and applied the index to assess the existing infrastructures and structural alternatives (i.e., sewer network expansion, additional storage tank construction, and green roof construction) at a site prone to floods located around Gangnam-station, Seoul, Korea. At a rainfall intensity frequency range of 2 to 20 years, the usage of a storage tank and a green roof showed relatively high RCI value, with a variation of an alternative showing greater RCI between the two depending on the size of design rainfall. For a rainfall intensity frequency of 30 years, installing a storage tank with some green roofing was the most resilient alternative based on the RCI value. We proposed strategies for establishing resilient infrastructures for the mitigation of urban floods by evaluating the robustness of existing infrastructures and selecting optimal structural alternatives with the consideration of scales of design disaster.
Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of reflexology foot massage (RFM) to improve quality of life and reduce anxiety for hospitalized cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods: This study was conducted at the East-West Cancer Center at Daejeon University; Using an waiting list and non-treatment control research design, we compared the results of control group and to that of the experimental group. The study consisted of 14 hospitalized cancer patients being admitted to the East-West Cancer Center of Daejeon University Dunsan Oriental Hospital in Korea. We measured FACT-G (Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-General) and STAI (Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory) scale before, after and 48 hours after the intervention. The patients received 30 minute RFM 5 times a week. Results: There was an average increase on the FACT-G, Physical, total scale and decrease of STAI 1 scale in the treatment group compared with control group (P < 0.05). Anxiety in the treatment group showed significant decrease compared to control group. It suggests that RFM may alleviate cancer-related anxiety and contribute to the improvement in quality of life among cancer patients. Therefore, there was limited equivalences with experimental group. Conclusions: We concluded that RFM can be considered a supportive treatment used in combination with chemotherapy.
Objective: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a nonsurgical treatment alternative to surgery for various musculoskeletal diseases that have traditionally been difficult to treat conservatively, including calcific tendinitis, tennis elbow, and plantar fasciitis. This study evaluated the effect of focused and radial shock wave therapy for calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. Design: Randomized controlled study Methods: Forty participants with calcific tendinitis were randomized into focused shock wave therapy (FSWT, n=20) and radial shock wave therapy (RSWT, n=20) groups. Patients were examined before and one week after treatment. Pain intensity was subjectively assessed using the visual analogue scale and function was assessed using the Constant-Murley score (CMS) and range of motion (ROM). Results: The results showed a significant decrease in pain and significant increase in shoulder mobility and function in both groups. However, FSWT was significantly more effective than RSWT, based on CMS and ROM assessment. Conclusions: Although it is possible to raise the energy intensity of RSWT to increase the depth at which the energy becomes dispersed, higher energy intensity is associated with a greater risk of severe neurovascular damage, and that high-intensity stimulation can cause adverse effects such as pain and petechiae. Therefore, FSWT is considered to be a safe and effective method for treating tendinous lesions while minimizing adverse effects. In conclusion, both FSWT and RSWT can reduce pain and increase mobility and function. FSWT can be considered as an alternative for calcific tendinitis of the shoulder.
The Highway Capacity Manual specifies procedures for evaluating intersection performance in terms of delay per vehicle. What is lacking in the current methodology is a comparable quantitative procedure for ass~ssing the safety-based level of service provided to motorists. The objective of the research described herein was to develop a computational procedure for evaluating the safety-based level of service of signalized intersections based on the relative hazard of alternative intersection designs and signal timing plans. Conflict opportunity models were developed for those crossing, diverging, and stopping maneuvers which are associated with left-turn and rear-end accidents. Safety¬based level-of-service criteria were then developed based on the distribution of conflict opportunities computed from the developed models. A case study evaluation of the level of service analysis methodology revealed that the developed safety-based criteria were not as sensitive to changes in prevailing traffic, roadway, and signal timing conditions as the traditional delay-based measure. However, the methodology did permit a quantitative assessment of the trade-off between delay reduction and safety improvement. The Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) specifies procedures for evaluating intersection performance in terms of a wide variety of prevailing conditions such as traffic composition, intersection geometry, traffic volumes, and signal timing (1). At the present time, however, performance is only measured in terms of delay per vehicle. This is a parameter which is widely accepted as a meaningful and useful indicator of the efficiency with which an intersection is serving traffic needs. What is lacking in the current methodology is a comparable quantitative procedure for assessing the safety-based level of service provided to motorists. For example, it is well¬known that the change from permissive to protected left-turn phasing can reduce left-turn accident frequency. However, the HCM only permits a quantitative assessment of the impact of this alternative phasing arrangement on vehicle delay. It is left to the engineer or planner to subjectively judge the level of safety benefits, and to evaluate the trade-off between the efficiency and safety consequences of the alternative phasing plans. Numerous examples of other geometric design and signal timing improvements could also be given. At present, the principal methods available to the practitioner for evaluating the relative safety at signalized intersections are: a) the application of engineering judgement, b) accident analyses, and c) traffic conflicts analysis. Reliance on engineering judgement has obvious limitations, especially when placed in the context of the elaborate HCM procedures for calculating delay. Accident analyses generally require some type of before-after comparison, either for the case study intersection or for a large set of similar intersections. In e.ither situation, there are problems associated with compensating for regression-to-the-mean phenomena (2), as well as obtaining an adequate sample size. Research has also pointed to potential bias caused by the way in which exposure to accidents is measured (3, 4). Because of the problems associated with traditional accident analyses, some have promoted the use of tqe traffic conflicts technique (5). However, this procedure also has shortcomings in that it.requires extensive field data collection and trained observers to identify the different types of conflicts occurring in the field. The objective of the research described herein was to develop a computational procedure for evaluating the safety-based level of service of signalized intersections that would be compatible and consistent with that presently found in the HCM for evaluating efficiency-based level of service as measured by delay per vehicle (6). The intent was not to develop a new set of accident prediction models, but to design a methodology to quantitatively predict the relative hazard of alternative intersection designs and signal timing plans.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of robot-assisted therapy on upper extremity function. Methods : This study used a single-subject experimental A-B-A' design. Three Parkinson's disease patients took part. Each subject received a robot-assisted therapy intervention (45 min/session, 5 sessions/week for 4 weeks). Upper extremity movement was evaluated with the Reo Assessment tool in Reogo. The Jebsen-Taylor hand motor function test, Fugle-Mayer Assessment score, Box and Block Test, and Nine-hole pegboard test were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results : After intervention, all subjects underwent 3D motion analysis of reaching function. There was overall improvement in resistance, smoothness, direction accuracy, path efficiency, initiation time, and time to moving target with robot-assisted therapy. Robot-assisted therapy may have a positive effect on upper extremity movement in Parkinson's disease. Conclusion : Robot-assisted therapy is considered an alternative in clinical occupational therapy to improve upper extremity function in Parkinson's disease.
Objective This study was performed to investigate whether Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture(BVP) could be a more effective modality than Warm Needling(WN) in relieving pain and symptoms of knee osteoarthritis(OA). Design Prospective, randomized and controlled clinical trial. Setting Single center trial in Korea Patients 49 volunteers with knee OA participated in the study. All the participants were screened through an inclusion and exclusion criteria. 33 participants were completed the clinical trial. Intervention The subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group received BVP(n=18), while the other group received WN(n=15). Sixteen sessions of BVP or WN were given at the pain region of the problematic knee for 8 weeks. Primary outcome measure is the Korean translation of Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index scores(Korean WOMAC, KWOMAC). Secondary outcome measure is the physical health scores based on the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey(SF-36) and Patient Global Assessment(PGA). KWOMAC and SF-36 were measured third (baseline, 4 and 8 weeks). PGA was measured twice(4 and 8 weeks). Results BVP group showed significant decrease compared to WN group in pain, function and total scores of KWOMAC according to the Mann-Whitney U-test. In the PGA, BVP group, compared to WN group, showed a significant increase. Conclusions BVP was more effective in relieving pain of knee OA than WN. These findings suggest that BVP is a promising alternative for treating knee OA.
Turkey is located in one of the most seismically active regions of in Europe. The majority of the population living in big cities are at high seismic risk due to insufficient structural resistance of the existing buildings. Such a seismic risk brings the need for a comprehensive seismic evaluation based on the risk analysis in Turkey. Determining the seismic resistance level of existing building stock against the earthquakes is the first step to reduce the damages in a possible earthquake. Recently in January 2020, the Elazig earthquake brought the importance of the issue again in the public. However, the excessive amount of building stock, labor, and resource problems made the implementation phase almost impossible and revealed the necessity to carry out alternative studies on this issue. This study aims for a detailed investigation of residential buildings in Antalya, Turkey. The approach proposed here can be considered an improved state of building survey methods previously identified in Turkey's Design Code. Antalya, Turkey's fifth most populous city, with a population over 2.5 Million, was investigated as divided into sub-regions to understand the vulnerability, and a threshold value found for the study area. In this study, 26,610 reinforced concrete buildings between 1 to 7 stories in Antalya were examined by using the rapid visual assessment method. A specific threshold value for the city of Antalya was determined with the second level examination and statistical methods carried out in the determined sub-region. With the micro zonation process, regions below the threshold value are defined as the priority areas that need to be examined in detail. The developed methodology can be easily calibrated for application in other cities and can be used to determine new threshold values for those cities.
Local wall thinning and integrity degradation caused by several mechanisms, such as flow accelerated corrosion (FAC), cavitation, flashing and/or liquid drop impingements, are a main concern in carbon steel piping systems of nuclear power plant in terms of safety and operability. Thinned pipe management program (TPMP) had been developed and optimized to reduce the possibility of unplanned shutdown and/or power reduction due to pipe failure caused by wall thinning in the secondary side piping system. This program also consists of several technical elements such as prediction of wear rate for each component, prioritization of components for inspection, thickness measurement, calculation of actual wear and wear rate for each component. Decision making is associated with replacement or continuous service for thinned pipe components. Establishment of long-term strategy based on diagnosis of plant condition regarding overall wall thinning is also essential part of the program. Prediction models of wall thinning caused by FAC had been established for 24 operating nuclear plants. Long term strategies to manage the thinned pipe component were prepared and applied to each unit, which was reflecting plant specific design, operation, and inspection history, so that the structural integrity of piping system can be maintained. An alternative integrity assessment criterion and a computer program for thinned piping items were developed for the first time in the world, which was directly applicable to the secondary piping system of nuclear power plant. The thinned pipe management program is applied to all domestic nuclear power plants as a standard procedure form so that it contributes to preventing an accident caused by FAC.
Due to globalization, diversification, and informatization, modern society confronts change and crisis in a variety of areas such as economy, politics, and culture. In that context, mathematics educators seek for how to reform school mathematics for democratic and just society. This research proposes critical mathematics education as an alternative model of school mathematics for democratic society. In particular, this research is an explorative study to construct a model of critical mathematics education program. For the purpose, we conducted a comprehensive literature review to identify goals, contents, and methods of teaching and learning, and method of assessment for critical mathematics education. We checked the validity of the model by using the cases of critical mathematics education. Since this research is explorative in the regard that the model is based on theoretical literatures, further research is necessary to extend the model through design research in school context.
