  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the education status, knowledge, and perception of oral care among senior nursing students from Republic of Korea who completed all four curricular courses of Introduction to Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, Adult Nursing and Gerontological Nursing in order to provide basic data for effective oral care of inpatients. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted for 137 senior nursing students in the Seoul and Gangwon regions who were selected by convenience sampling. The questionnaire consisted of questions about the perception of oral care. A frequency analysis was conducted to analyze education status, perception, and general characteristics of participants. In addition, independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance were conducted to assess differences in the knowledge level according to the characteristics of the students. A p-value less than 0.05 was statistically significant. Results: The study results revealed that 63.5% of the respondents received education on oral care, with 67.8% of them receiving the education during their regular curriculum. Of the responders who said they received education, 41.4% said that education was not enough. Furthermore, the majority of respondents (56.9%) considered dental hygienists to be most suitable for the administration of oral care for inpatients. Conclusion: This study revealed nursing students' positive perceptions of the importance of oral care and dental hygienists'performance of oral care for inpatients. Consideration should be given to healthcare workers in various professions for improving oral health in inpatients, as well as for further study of oral care in the curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study was investigate the relationship between the degree of satisfaction of the clinical practice and the stress factors for dental hygiene students. Dental hygiene students to 232 people from May 21, 2012 to June 22, 2012 and analyzed using by SPSS for Windows ver. 12.0 program. Regarding the stress factors, by the school system, all the factors, including the environmental factor, the role factor, the interpersonal relationships factor, the ideal and value factor, and the Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI) were higher in the 3-year system than in the 4-year system (p<0.01). Regarding the stress factors according to the degree of satisfaction regarding the practices, all the factors were high when unsatisfied. Among these, the environmental factor was the highest (p<0.001). According to the practice organization, the environmental factor was the highest among the university dental hospital. The interpersonal relationship factor and the ideal and value factor were the highest among the dental hospitals. The role factor and the BEPSI were the highest among the dental clinics (p<0.01). When the hospital atmosphere was bad, the environmental factor was the highest (p<0.001). As a result of analyzing the correlations between the stress factors of the hospital practices, there were the positive correlations among the environment, the roles, the interpersonal relationship, the ideals and values, and the BEPSI (p<0.01). The stress factor that showed the biggest influence on the BEPSI was interpersonal relationships. In the clinical practice, because of the unfamiliar environment and the insufficiency of the interpersonal relationships, the stress indices of the students can be higher than at ordinary times. I believe that, as such, a systematic management plan for the clinical practice for raising the ability of the students to cope with the stress by themselves must be prepared.

  • This study aims to furnish basic data about prevention and infection control of Hepatitis B Virus(HBV) for those who, working in dental offices, are particularly exposed to a high risk of HBV infection. A survey was conducted to 310 students including freshmen, sophomores and juniors enrolled in the dental hygiene department in order to examine their knowledge about infection routes of HBV, clinical history of their family members and their own health. The outcomes of the survey showed following facts; 1. Students were found to lack knowledge about the present conditions of their HBsAg and HBsAb of HBV(PF0.05), conduct of preventive vaccination(PE0.05), completion of 3 required vaccinations(PF0.05) and formation of antibody(PF0.05). 2. Students named "blood"(88.6%) and "infected needles"(82.5%) as most likely infection routes of HBV(PE0.05 and PE0.01). These replies came mostly from sophomores(65.6% and 92.1%), followed by juniors(89.2%, 82.5%) and freshmen(81.1%, 73.0%). Least knowledge about infection routes of HBV was sensed with the reply "infection through breast-feeding of positive mother(27.9%)"(PE0.05). Generally, sophomores seemed to have much knowledge about infection routes, followed by juniors and freshmen in order. 3. As to clinical history of family members, 10 students(3.5%) replied that any of their family members is suffering from HBV now, 8(2.6%) revealed that some of their family members once suffered from it and 10(3.2%) reported cases of death of their family members from liver diseases. 4. A survey was conducted on dental hygiene students of a university in B area, and data were analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS 24.0 program. The extrinsic work value had a positive effect on the career decision self-efficacy directly and a negative effect on the major satisfaction, a mediator. The intrinsic work value had a positive effect on the major satisfaction directly. Additionally, extrinsic and intrinsic work values had an indirect effect on career decision self-efficacy through major satisfaction. The results suggest that it is necessary to form desirable work values and increase the level of major satisfaction in order to improve career decision self-efficacy and could be used as fundamental data for setting a career and education direction of dental hygiene students.
