  • This study aimed to provide the basic data for the prevention of carpal tunnel syndrome by measuring and comparatively analyzing the changes in muscular strength, grasping force, and agility of hands before/after practice, targeting the dental hygiene students taking the scaling practice course. Targeting total 15 students(4th-year) of Dental Hygienics who had no problems with anatomical structure, muscular strength, grasping force, and senses of hands, the muscular strength, grasping force, and agility of hands were measured before/after the scaling practice. The collected data was processed by using the PASW Statistics 18.0(SPSS) Program. In the results of this study, the muscular strength and grasping force of hands were decreased after the practice compared to the ones before the practice. The agility of hands was increased after the practice compared to the one before the practice. Based on such results of this study, it would be necessary to avoid such exhausting hand gestures for scaling, and also to develop the preventive exercise to build up the strength of hands like stretching before/after scaling.

  • Lately, national hygiene & medical environment and its demand aspect have been rapidly changing, and market opening of hygiene and medical sector is accelerating. Due to the change in labor resulting from the wide range of change in industrial structure and the steady decrease in university applicants, most of colleges and universities have been strongly urged to establish hygiene medical manpower training courses or relative courses, which leaves the medical technician training courses in 4 year universities on the robust increase. Consequently, the medical technicians, graduating from 3 year colleges without bachelor's degree due to shortage of 20 credits for acquisition of degree, have had to compete with the graduates from 4 year universities and the bachelor's degree has been in continuous demand for the medical technicians of 3 year college. In the research for recognition of Credit Bank System prevalent across the colleges, enabling the systematic acquisition of bachelor's degree, 60.9% among the respondents are aware of Credit Bank System, and 46.9% are aware that Advanced Major Course is induced in the near future. Hence, there shall be active promotions of various programs allowing acquisition of bachelor's degree in the colleges. The social change in recognition of colleges by inducement of the two programs may authorize the college to have the scholastic attainments equivalent to the 4 year university, and the political initiative shall be deliberated across over the government and the academic world.

Questionnaire survey was posed to 96 dental hygienists working in health centers and health sub-centers. The results were follows; 1. Sealant was performed the most frequently in the health centers and health sub-centers, and it was also the most useful content in the education curriculum. And the tooth brushing method was considered the most important in the curriculum. Therefore, oral health education was considered as factor which required the most reinforcement. However, the issues of school water fluoridation and water fluoridation in the public oral health were barely brought up as a matter of subject. 2. In the relationship between the frequency of task and the usefulness of curriculum, it showed that the more frequency of task was more useful. In the relationship between importance and reinforcements of curriculum, it showed that the more importance of the education curriculum requires more reinforcement. And more frequently performed task should be more strengthened. 3. According to the education course hours, current education curriculum course hours were 532.4 hours, which is 42.9 hours more spent than the original curriculum guideline. Lecture hours were 205.4 hours, which is 50.6 hours less, and the practice hours were 327 hours, which is 93.5 hours more than the original curriculum guideline. 4. • This study investigated factors affecting care for elderly patients, management of systemic disease, infection management, improvement of medical care quality, and educational requirements, and provide basic data for quality care for elderly patients with systemic diseases. An online survey was conducted among dental hygienists working at dental institutions and data of 172 individuals were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 program. Descriptive statistics was performed for general characteristics. For factor analysis by general characteristics, t-test and ANOVA were performed. For differences between groups Scheffe verification was performed. A correlation analysis between factors was performed using Pearson's correlation analysis, and a factor analysis affecting the improvement of healthcare quality was performed using multiple linear regression analysis. Care for elderly patients was 52.33/75, management of systemic disease was 12.65/17, and infection management was 96.92/130. Improvement of medical quality (institutional effort) was 22.87/35, and improvement of medical quality (personal effort) was 22.72/35. The most common educational needs were "necessary". Analysis revealed a positive correlation between factors.. Factors affecting improvement of medical quality (personal effort) were age, final academic background, place of work, and the presence or absence of annual medical examinations. The findings of this study indicate that there is a significant correlation between factors. For the qualitative care of elderly patients, education programs related to elderly characteristics, systemic diseases, and infection management should be actively conducted by dental hygienists, and interest and research on geriatric dental hygiene is needed, centering on associations and educational institutions.

  • Background: The shortage of dental hygienists as assistant is a great concern to dental clinics, while dental hygienists are rather pursuing the role of oral hygiene control and preventive treatments which is the main role for dental hygienists in the United States. The dental hygienist and dental assistant system in the United States can be a reference in these discussions. Methods: Educational requirements for licensure and work areas for dental hygienists and dental assistants were investigated through the information provided by the American Dental Association (ADA), American Dental Hygienists Association, National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE), Dental Assistants Association of America (ADAA), and Dental Assistants National Board (DANB). Results: In the United States, each state has different systems, but in general, dental hygienists obtain licenses after completing 2~3 years of associate degree programs in dental hygiene after obtaining basic learning skills, and mainly perform tasks related to patient screening procedures, oral hygiene management and preventive care. Dental assistants can take the license test after completing a training course of 9~11 months to obtain a dental assistant certification. Additional expanded work typically requires passing state qualification tests, completing a training program, obtaining a degree, or gaining clinical experience for a certain period of time, depending on the state Conclusion: The scope of work of dental hygienists designated by the Medical Engineer Act and the Enforcement Decree in Korea includes both the work of dental hygienists and dental assistants in the United States, and if a dental assistant system like the United States is introduced to address the current shortage of dental assistants, institutional supplementation such as adjustment of the scope of work and expansion of the role of dental hygienists in oral hygiene management and prevention work is needed and in-depth discussion is necessary.
