The Effects of GalGunSeunggi-tang (GST) on Mice Induced Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) by DNCB (DNCB로 유발된 생쥐의 알레르기접촉피부염에 갈근승기탕(葛根承氣湯)이 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of GalGunSeungGi-Tang (GST) on allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) induced by 2,4-dintrochlorobenzone (DNCB) Methods In this study, The changes of body weight, ear weight, ear thickness, spleen weight, dorsum skin thickness, symptom score by eyesight, histological finding, proliferation rates of splenocyte in vitro and in vivo are investigated to check effects of GST. The mice are divided into four group; Normal (naive mice), Control (DW administered), GST-L (GST 500mg/Kg/day administered), GST-H (GST 1,000mg/Kg/day administered). Results GST inhibited weight of ear significantly (P < 0.05) and also thickness (P < 0.01). In addition, There are significant decrease in thickness of dorsum skin and proliferation rates of splenocyte in vivo in GST administered group. Finally, GST reduced symptom score and hyperkeratosis, hyperpigmentation, increase of granulocyte and parakeratosis in histological finding. Conclusions These results suggest that GST can decrease symptoms of ACD.

  • Objectives : The Korean medical doctors use PMR(Polygoni Multiflori Radix) for nourishing the liver-kidney, loosing the bowel to relieve constipation, recovering from malaria, and clearing away heat and eliminating toxin, etc. But, this study was performed to investigate the effect of water extracts from PMR on prevention of hyperlipidemia and liver damage induced by alcohol. Methods : Except for the normal group, we fed rat on 25% alcohol for 55 days. And the extract was administrated for the same period. We measured the serum components in rat's blood, body weight and weight of liver. Results : At first, we observed effects of PMR on prevention of hyperlipidemia induced by alcohol. PMR group showed significant decrease of total cholesterol and triglyceride in comparison with those of the control group. PMR group showed significant increase of body weight in comparison with those of the control group in 4weeks and 8weeks. At second, we observed effects of PMR on prevention of liver damage induced by alcohol. PMR group showed significant decrease of GOT, GPT, ALP, and LDH in comparison with those of the control group. PMR group showed significant increase of liver weight in comparison with those of the control group. Conclusions : Reviewing these experimental results, it appears that water extracts from PMR have pharmaceutical efficacy on prevention of hyperlipidemia and liver damage induced by alcohol. Therefore further additional study should be conducted to elucidate in depth the pharmaceutical efficacy of these.

Methods : Except for the normal group, we fed rat on 25% alcohol for 55 days. And each extract was administrated for the same period. We measured the serum component in rat's blood, body weight and weight of liver. Results : At first, we observed effects of LW on hyperlipemia induced by alcohol. LW group didn't show significant increase of total cholesterol in comparison with those of the control group. LW group didn't show significant increase of HDL(High-Density lipoprotein) cholesterol in comparison with those of the control group. LW group showed significant decrease of triglyceride in comparison with those of the control group. Nephroprotective Effects of Taeksa-san Aqueous Extracts on Cisplatin-induced Rat Acute Renal Failure (택사산(澤瀉散) 추출물(抽出物)이 Cisplatin으로 유발(誘發)된 흰쥐의 급성신부전(急性腎不全)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Objectives : This study was to observe the nephroprotective effects of the traditional prescription, Taeksa-san(TSS). TSS has generally been used for treating various renal diseases, including renal failure. Methods : Three different dosages of TSS extract were orally administered once a day for 28 days, At the 23rd day after TSS extract treatment, cisplatin was also treated. Then, 5 days after cisplatin treatment, all the rats (6 groups of 8 rats each) were sacrificed. Changes in the body weight, kidney weight, serum BUN and creatinine levels were observed with changes on the kidney MDA and GSH contents. The results were compared with captopril 100mg/kg, of which the effects on cisplatin-induced acute renal failures are already confirmed. Results : Dramatic decrease of body weight, increase of kidney weight, increase of serum BUN and creatinine levels were detected in the cisplatin control as compared with the intact control. In addition, marked increase of kidney MDA contents and decrease of kidney GSH contents were also detected in the cisplatin control as compared with the intact control. This means that cisplatin-induced ARF is induced by oxidative stress and related lipid peroxidation in the present study. However, these ARFs and inhibition of antioxidant effects induced by cisplatin were dose-dependently reduced by treatment with all three different dosages of TSS extracts. Conclusion : This study suggests that TSS extracts show favorable effects on cisplatin-induced rat ARF.

Methods : Except for the normal group, we fed rats the control and Saengkankeonbi-tang groups with 25% alcohol for 55 days. For the same period we fed the Saengkankeonbi-tang group with Saengkankeonbi-tang extract as well and rats in normal and contrlo group on saline solution. We measured the serum components in rat's blood, body weight and weight of liver. Results : 1. At first, we observed effects of Saengkankeonbi-tang on prevention of hyperlipemia induced by alcohol. Saengkankeonbi-tang group showed significant decrease in total cholesterol levels in comparison with those of the control group. Saengkankeonbi-tang group showed significant increase in HDL-cholesterol levels in comparison with those of the control group. Saengkankeonbi-tang group showed significant increase of body weight in comparison with those of the control group in 4weeks and 8weeks. 2. At second, we observed effects of Saengkankeonbi-tang on prevention of liver damage induced by alcohol. Saengkankeonbi-tang group showed significant decrease in GOT, GPT, LDH and ALP levels in comparison with those of the control group. Saengkankeonbi-tang group showed significant increase of liver weight in comparison with those of the control group. High Molecular Weight Poly-Gamma-Glutamic Acid Regulates Lipid Metabolism in Rats Fed a High-Fat Diet and Humans

  • We investigated the effect of high molecular weight polygamma- glutamic acid (hm ${\gamma}$-PGA) on adiposity and lipid metabolism of rats in the presence of an obesity-inducing diet. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a normal-fat (11.4% kcal fat, NFC) or high-fat (51% kcal fat, HFC) diet. After 5 weeks, half of each diet-fed group was treated with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (NFP or HFP) for 4 weeks. The HFC group had significantly higher body weight, visceral fat mass, fasting serum levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and leptin, and lower serum HDL cholesterol level compared with those of the NFC group (p < 0.05). Treatment with hm ${\gamma}$-PGA decreased body weight gain and perirenal fat mass (p<0.05), fasting serum total cholesterol, and mRNA expression of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), regardless of dietary fat contents (p < 0.01). However, hm ${\gamma}$-PGA increased serum HDL cholesterol in the HFC group (p < 0.05). In vitro, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMGCoA) reductase activity was suppressed by the addition of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA. In agreement with observations in animal study, the supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA (150 mg/day) to 20 female subjects in an 8-week double-blind, placebocontrolled study resulted in a tendency to decrease total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol concentrations. We thus conclude that dietary supplementation of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA may act as a hypocholestrolemic agent, secondary to its inhibitor effect on HMG-CoA reductase, and decrease abdominal adiposity by decreasing hepatic lipogenesis. The present study is an important first step in establishing the effect of hm ${\gamma}$-PGA on cholesterol levels in rats and humans.

  • In the women's clothing industry that targets middle aged-women, there is increased interest on middle-aged women and their appearance management and diet. It is believed that the body type of middle-aged women is becoming thinner. This study examines if middle-aged women body types have changed based on data from the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ Size Korea that objectively analyzed the aspects of middle-aged women's body size change and the related fashion industry that recognize changes in middle-aged women body types by suggesting foundational data for clothing designs. According to research results, middle-aged women's body type shows an increase in items related to height and that measurement values related to obesity (such as weight and BMI index) tend to decrease. Height has increased and weight has decreased compared to the past. Most items related to width or depth tend to show decreased values and we can assume that the present middle-aged women's body type is changing more dynamically than before. It will be possible to design proper clothes for consumer body type and trends if we design clothes that afford multilateral attention to the patterns, design, or material in clothing design by applying the aspects of middle-aged women's body size and body type change.

Arginine as drug was first approved by FDA and has recognised as a excellent dietary supplement for curing diseases like preeclampsia during gestation, diabetes and insulin resistance in obese patients. Preeclampsia is characterised by high blood pressure and proteinuria in gestational period of after 20 weeks. Severe preeclampsia is characterised by headaches, blurred vision, and inability to have high photovision, nausea and vomiting. L-Arginine along with Vit C and E are given as medical food to the patients and decrease in condition symptoms is the project now under phase II clinical trial. However the role of arginine in ameolirating preeclampsia symptoms is uncertain except with that of hypertension. Arginine is used to treat pain in sickle cell anaemia, lung damage, reperfusion injury, Trauma and shock but should be excluded during sepsis.
