  • In recent years, the size of data set which we usually handle is enormous, so a lot of outliers could be included in data set. Therefore the robust procedures that automatically handle outliers become very importance issue. We consider the robust estimation problem of location parameter in the univariate case. In this paper, we propose a new method for defining robustness weights for the weighted mean based on the median distance of observations and compare its performance with several existing robust estimators by a simulation study. It turns out that the proposed method is very competitive.

  • Within the conventional transportation planning process, "trip distribution" has a significant role to play. The most widely applied trip distribution model is the gravity model, for which Wilson provided the theoretical basis in 1967. The concept of the gravity model, however, still remains ambiguous if we analyze the "trip distribution" with a disaggregate data set. Thus, this paper hypothesizes that the gravity technique is still valid even with the disaggregate data set, by proving that the estimated coefficients of the gravity model, which is derived under the principle of entropy maximization, are identical with those of the multinomial logit model, which is derived under the principle of individual utility maximization.tility maximization.

  • Recently, Zhang et al.(Fuzzy Sets and Systems 147(2004) 475-485) proved Fatou's lemma and Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem under some conditions of fuzzy measure. In this note, we show that these conditions of fuzzy measure is essential to prove Fatou's lemma and Lebesgue dominated convergence theorem by examples

  • In this paper we propose a method of computing Bayes factor to detect an outlier in a random effects model. When no information is available and hence improper noninformative priors should be used Bayes factor includes the unspecified constants and has complicated computational burden. To solve this problem we use the fractional Bayes factor (FBF) of O-Hagan(1995) and the generalized Savage0-Dickey density ratio of Verdinelli and Wasserman (1995) The proposed method is applied to outlier deterction problem We perform a simulation of the proposed approach with a simulated data set including an outlier and also analyze a real data set.

  • Data set generated by teh bivariate dichotomous choice made by individuals often occurs in practice. This paper presents general model of how such data set is generated as well as methods of estimation. The M.L.E. is examined and found to be computationally burdensome. A simpler estimator, the bivariate dichotomous two-stage estimator, is suggested as an alternative. The two-stage estimator is found to be as efficient as the M.L.E.

  • The Multivariate State Estimation Technique (MSET) is being used in Nuclear Power Plants for sensor and equipment condition monitoring. This paper presents the use of regularization methods for optimizing MSET's predictive performance. The techniques are applied to a simulated data set and a data set obtained from a nuclear power plant currently implementing empirical, on-line, equipment condition monitoring techniques. The results show that regularization greatly enhances the predictive performance. Additionally, the selection of prototype vectors is investigated and a local modeling method is presented that can be applied when computational speed is desired.

  • The purpose of this study is to set the various cost-of-living standards utilizing a published national data. 1995 annual data, The Family Income and Expenditure Survey, were used to set the standards of living. Four index reflecting health and decency level, normal level, minimum of health and decency level, and pauper level were suggested and the cost-of-living of each level were estimated. Results showed that cost-of-living estimated in this study were not quite different from those of former studies, but the name of the standard-of-living need to be changed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is developing the nursing information system which contains the core elements of nursing practice, the Nursing Minimum Data Set (NMDS) that should be collected and documented all the settings in which nursing care is provided. Method: The program was developed under the hospital information system by TCP/IP protocol and used NANDA, Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC), and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) to fill out the elements of NMDS. The Oracle was used as DBMS under the Windows 98 environment and Power Builder 5.0 was used as a program language. Results: This study developed linkage among the NANDA-NOC-NIC to facilitate choosing correct nursing diagnosis, interventions, and outcomes and stimulate nurses' critical thinking. Also the system developed includes nursing care sensitive patient outcomes, so nurses can actively involve in nursing effectiveness research by analyzing the data stored in the database or by making relational databases with other health care related databases. Conclusion: The program developed in this study ultimately can be used for the nursing research, policy development, reimbursement of nursing care, and calculating staffing and nursing skill mix by providing tool to describe and organize nursing practice and measure the nursing care effectiveness.
