  • In modern society, as technology has advanced and human life area has expanded, there has been an increasing demand for high-quality voice and video communications services without restrictions on time and place. In response to this demand, satellite communications systems that provide a wide range of communications and that offer multiple access are evolving day by day. In satellite communications systems such as Digital Video Broadcasting - Return Channel Via Satellite (DVB-RCS) and Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T), the multi-frequency time division multiple access (MF-TDMA) demand assigned multiple access (DAMA) scheme is used for efficient resource allocation. In this scheme, since the satellite terminals periodically request resources from the network controller, and the network controller dynamically allocates resources, it is necessary to arrange resource allocation information from time to time. Shortening of the alignment time is a more important factor in a satellite communications system in which a long transmission delay occurs due to long-distance transmission and reception. In this paper, we propose a sorting algorithm variable-selection scheme that shortens the sorting time by cross-selecting the sorting algorithm based on a threshold value, while setting the number of frames in the MF-TDMA DAMA satellite communications system as the threshold value.

  • A 6${\times}$4 top-cross set was made from the ten silkworm parental lines selected by the first principal component scores. They were also analysed for the relationship between the combining ability and the first principal component score. The highest general combining ability effects were detected in the parental lines of Japanese, N39 and chinese, C46, for the most quantitative characters in the study. The first principal component score of factors related to silk productivity in the parents was significantly and positively correlated to the general combining ability of the twelve characters such as cocoon yield, cocoon weight, cocoon shell weight, cocoon shell percentage, duration of the 5th instar larvae, total larval period, length of a bave, weight of a have, non-breaking length of a bave, non-breaking weight of a have, raw silk percentage, and neatness. Similarity distance (D$^2$) was related to the specific combining ability of the characters such as cocoon yield, non-breaking length of a bave, non-breaking weight of a have, non-breaking ratio of a bave, raw silk percentage, neatness. From the results, it is possible to predict the general combining ability effects by the principal component scores for the 12 characters of the parents related to silk productivity.

  • This study was conducted to identify DNA markers related to resistance to herbicide containing mesotrione in Tongil type rice. Two Tongil type elite lines; Milyang154 and Suweon382, showed resistance to mesotrione, whereas the others were susceptible at 20 days after mesotrione application, and severe growth inhibition was observed in the remaining 13 lines. As a result of analysis of mesotrione resistance using 190 $F_2$ populations derived from a cross of Hanareum2 (susceptible) and Milyang154 (resistant), the mesotrione resistance locus was shown to be a single dominant gene with a 3:1 segregation ratio ($X^2=1.19$, P=0.31). To identify a DNA marker closely linked to the mesotrione resistance gene, bulked segregant analysis (BSA) was adopted. The DNA marker RM3501 was identified on chromosome 2 with a recombinant value of 0.53 to the mesotrione resistance gene. Mst1(t) was located between SSR (simple sequence repeat) markers RM3501 and RM324 with a physical map distance of 10.2 Mb-11.4 Mb on chromosome 2. The band pattern of agarose gel electrophoresis of the SSR marker RM3501 showed the same segregation pattern with respect to mesotrione treatment in 20 Tongil type varieties and a $BC_2F_2$ segregation population derived from a cross between Unkwang (resistant) and Hanareum2 (susceptible). Thus, the RM3501 DNA marker could be used in breeding programs for Marker Assisted Selection in mesotrione resistant rice breeding.

  • Class III malocclusion patients can be approached with many different types of treatment methods, and thus, each patient's problems must be accurately evaluated to allow selection of the best possible treatment method. Cephalometric analysis is an essential part of diagnosis and treatment planning of orthodontic patients, and it would certainly be helpful if reliable cephalometric guidelines could be set. The author divided 482 Class III malocclusion patients(253 males and 229 females) into fourgroups according to different types of treatment methods they have received to correct imbalance between upper and lower jaws: 1) orthopedic appliance (face mask & RPE), 2) camouflage treatment with fixed appliance, 3) surgical-orthodontic treatment, 4) cross-bite correction with removable plates/ functional appliance. Cephalometric values at the time of first clinical examination were compare among the four groups. Cephalometric analysis indicates the following results: 1)the amounts of antero-posterior and vertical skeletal discrepancies and dental compensation were greatest in surgery group 2) SNB, Wits, distance from Nasion Perpendicular Plane to point a facial angle, facial convexity, and APDI were greater in orthopedic appliance group than fixed appliance(camouflage) group, but there was no statistical difference 3) removable plates/ functional appliance group showed least amounts of skeletal discrepancies and dental compensation with statistical significance.

  • High-density genetic linkage mapping is critical for undertaking marker-assisted selection and confirming quantitative trait loci, as well as helping to build pseudomolecules of genomes. We constructed a genetic map using 94 $F_1$ populations generated from the interspecific cross between Korean cultivar "Wonwhang" (Pyrus pyrifolia, NCBI BioSample SAMN05196235) and European cultivar "Bartlett" (Pyrus communis). We designed a total of 24,267 SSR markers based on the genome sequences of "Wonwhang" for this. To select the markers that are linked to the traits important in pear breeding programs, SSR-containing genomic sequences were subjected to nucleotide sequence homology searches, which resulted in 510 SSR markers with high similarity to genes encoding proteins with putative functions such as transcription factors, resistance proteins, flowering time, and regulatory genes. Of these, 70 markers showed polymorphisms in parents and segregating populations and were used to construct a genetic linkage map, together with the unpublished 579 SNPs obtained from genotyping by sequencing analysis. The genetic linkage map covered 3,784.2 cM and the average distance between adjacent markers was 5.8 cM. Seventy SSR markers were distributed across 17 chromosomes with more than one locus.

  • Pepper ($Capsicum$ spp.) anthracnose caused by $Colletotrichum$ $acutatum$ is a destructive disease susceptible to areas where chili peppers are grown. $Capsicum$ $baccatum$ var. $pendulum$ (Cbp) is resistant to anthracnose and has actively been used for interspecific hybridization for the introgression of resistance gene(s) into cultivated chili peppers. The goals of this study were to determine the inheritance of resistance to anthracnose within $Capsicum$ $baccatum$ and to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the anthracnose resistance. A genetic mapping population consisting of 126 $F_2$ plants derived from a cross between $Capsicum$ $baccatum$ var. $pendulum$ (resistant) and $Capsicum$ $baccatum$ 'Golden-aji' (susceptible) was used for linkage mapping. The linkage map was constructed with 52 SSRs, 175 AFLPs, and 100 SRAPs covering 1,896cM, with an average interval marker distance of 4.0cM. Based on this map, the number, location, and effect of QTLs for anthracnose resistance were studied using plants inoculated in the laboratory and field. A total of 19 quantitative trait loci (2 major QTLs and 16 minor QTLs) were detected. Two QTLs ($An8.1$, $An9.1$) showed 16.4% phenotypic variations for anthracnose resistance after wounding inoculation. In addition, five minor QTL loci ($An7.3$, $An7.4$, $An4.1$, $An3.1$, $An3.2$) showed a total of 60.73% phenotypic variations of anthracnose resistance in the field test. Several significant QTLs were also detected and their reproducibility was confirmed under different inoculation conditions. These QTLs are now being confirmed with different breeding populations. Markers tightly linked to the QTLs that are reliable under different environmental conditions will help to determine the success of marker-assisted selection for anthracnose -resistant breeding programs in chili pepper.
