  • The concrete bridge decks are usually precast and in-situ assembled with steel girders with post-pouring joint in the construction practice of super-wide steel-concrete composite beam. But the difference of concrete age between the precast slabs and the post-pouring joint has been not yet considered for the long-term performance analysis of this kind composite beam. A simply supported precast-assembled T-shaped beam was taken as an example to analyze the long-term performance of steel-concrete composite beam with post-pouring joint. Based on the deformation coordination conditions of the old-new concrete deck and steel girder, a theoretical model for the long-term behavior of precast-assembled composite beam is proposed in this paper according to age-adjusted effective modulus method. Then, the feasibility of the proposed model is verified by the available test data from the Gilbert's composite beams. Parametric studies were preformed to evaluate the influences of the cross-sectional area ratio of the post-pouring joint to the whole bridge deck, as well as the difference of concrete age between the precast slabs and the post-pouring joint, on the long-term performance of the composite beam. The results indicate that the traditional method without considering the age difference would seriously underestimate the effect of creep and shrinkage of concrete bridge decks. The concrete age difference between the precast slabs and the post-pouring joint should be demonstrated for the life cycle design and long-term performance analysis of precast-assembled steel-concrete composite beams.

  • The transient nature and complex flow geometries of two-phase gas-liquid flows cause fundamental difficulties when measuring flow velocity using an electromagnetic flowmeter. Recently, a current-sensing flowmeter was introduced to obtain measurements with high temporal resolution (Ahn et $al.^{(1)}$). In this study, current-sensing flowmeter theory was applied to measure the fast velocity transients in slug flows. To do this, the velocity fields of axisymmetric gas-liquid slug flow in a vertical pipe were obtained using Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) method and the virtual potential distributions for the electrodes of finite size were also computed using the finite volume method for the simulated slug flow. The output signal prediction for slug flow was carried out from the velocity and virtual potential (or weight function) fields. The flowmeter was numerically calibrated to obtain the cross-sectional liquid mean velocity at an electrode plane from the predicted output signal. Two calibration parameters are required for this procedure: a flow pattern coefficient and a localization parameter. The flow pattern coefficient was defined by the ratio of the liquid resistance between the electrodes for two-phase flow with respect to that for single-phase flow, and the localization parameter was introduced to avoid errors in the flowmeter readings caused by liquid acceleration or deceleration around the electrodes. These parameters were also calculated from the computed velocity and virtual potential fields. The results can be used to obtain the liquid mean velocity from the slug flow signal measured by a current-sensing flowmeter.

  • The comparative study of regression-model-based approximate optimization techniques used in the strength design of an automotive knuckle component that will be under bump and brake loading conditions is carried out. The design problem is formulated such that the cross-sectional sizing variables are determined by minimizing the weight of the knuckle component that is subjected to stresses, deformations, and vibration frequency constraints. The techniques used in the comparative study are sequential approximate optimization (SAO), sequential two-point diagonal quadratic approximate optimization (STDQAO), and approximate optimization based on enhanced moving least squares method (MLSM), such as CF (constraint feasible)-MLSM and Post-MLSM. Commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tools are utilized for the application of SAO and STDQAO. The enhanced MLSM-based approximate optimization techniques are newly developed to ensure constraint feasibility. The results of the approximate optimization techniques are compared with those of actual non-approximate optimization to evaluate their numerical performances.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine BMI, body fat mass, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio, soft lean mass, skeletal muscle mass, and fat free mass, and to determine the association between dietary behavior and exercise and body composition among students at women's colleges, and decide on the relationships among them. Method: This study employed a cross-sectional study design and a convenient sampling method. Ultimately, a total of 404 students participated in the study, which was conducted from September 1 to December 22, 2009. Measurements administered were comprised of dietary behavior and a questionnaire on exercise. The SPSS Win 18.0 statistics program was used for analysis of final data. Results: Major findings are as follows: 9.9% of participants showed a high BMI, and more than 56% and 38% of participants showed a high percent body fat and waist-hip ratio, respectively. Dietary behavior showed a significant negative association with percent body fat (r=-0.110, p=0.027) and waist-hip ratio (r=-0.118, p=0.018). Compared with the non-regular exercise group, the regular exercise group showed a high level of soft, lean mass (t=4.15, p<0.001), skeletal muscle mass (t=3.13, p=0.002), and fat free mass (t=4.00, p<0.001). Conclusion: For maintenance of proper body composition, health promotion programs for management of dietary behavior and regular exercise for students at women's colleges should be developed.

  • An epitaxial GaN layer was grown on a cone-shape-patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) (Sample A) and an AlN-buffered PSS (Sample B) with two growth steps under the same process conditions by employing the hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) method. We have investigated the characteristics of the GaN layer grown on two kinds of substrates at each growth step. The cross-sectional SEM image of the GaN layer grown on the two types of substrates showed growth states of GaN layers formed during the 1st and 2nd growth steps with different growth durations. Dislocation density was obtained by calculation using the FWHM value of the rocking curve for (002) and (102). Sample A showed 2.62+08E and 6.66+08E and sample B exhibited 5.74+07E and 1.65+08E for two different planes. The red shift was observed is photoluminescence (PL) analysis and Raman spectroscopy results. GaN layers grown on AlN-buffered PSS exhibited better optical and crystallographic properties than GaN layers grown on PSS.

  • Heterolayered K(Ta,Nb)O3/Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were prepared by a sol-gel process and spin-coating method. The structural and electrical properties were measured to investigate the possibility of application as an electrocaloric effect device. All specimens exhibited dense and uniform cross-sectional structures without pores, and the average thickness of the specimen coated six times was approximately 394 nm. Curie temperatures were observed at 5℃ or less in type-I and 10℃ in type-II specimens, respectively. Type-II specimens coated 6 times showed a relative dielectric constant of 758 and remanent polarization of 9.71 μC/㎠ at room temperature. The maximum electrocaloric effect occurred between 20 and 25℃, slightly higher than their Curie temperature, and the electrocaloric property (ΔT) of the type-II specimens coated 6 times was approximately 1.2℃ at room temperature.

  • Background: A permit to work (PTW) is a formal written system to control certain types of work which are identified as potentially hazardous. However, human error in PTW processes can lead to an accident. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted to estimate the probability of human errors in PTWprocesses in a chemical plant in Iran. In the first stage, through interviewing the personnel and studying the procedure in the plant, the PTW process was analyzed using the hierarchical task analysis technique. In doing so, PTWwas considered as a goal and detailed tasks to achieve the goal were analyzed. In the next step, the standardized plant analysis risk-human (SPAR-H) reliability analysis method was applied for estimation of human error probability. Results: The mean probability of human error in the PTW system was estimated to be 0.11. The highest probability of human error in the PTW process was related to flammable gas testing (50.7%). Conclusion: The SPAR-H method applied in this study could analyze and quantify the potential human errors and extract the required measures for reducing the error probabilities in PTW system. Some suggestions to reduce the likelihood of errors, especially in the field of modifying the performance shaping factors and dependencies among tasks are provided.

  • In this study seismic design procedure for buckling-restrained braced frame systems was proposed using hysteretic energy spectrum and accumulated ductility spectrum constructed from single degree of freedom systems. The hysteretic energy spectra and accumulated ductility spectra corresponding to target ductility ratio were constructed first. The cross-sectional area of braces required to meet a given target displacement was obtained by equating the hysteretic energy demand to the accumulated plastic energy dissipated by braces. Twenty earthquake records were utilized to construct the spectra and to verify the validity of the design procedure. According to analysis results of three- and eight-story buckling-restrained braced frame structures designed using the proposed method, the mean values for the top story displacement correspond well with the given performance target displacements. Also, the inter-story drifts turned out to be relatively uniform over the structure height, which is desirable because uniform inter-story drifts indicate uniform damage distribution. Therefore if was concluded that the proposed energy-based method could be a reliable alternative to conventional strength-based design procedure for structures with buckling-restrained braces.

  • Plastic containers which provides the opportunity to reduce transportation costs are lighter and less brittle than glass containers. As a results, efforts to replace glass with plastic are ongoing. The blow molding method is a typical approach in producing plastic containers. Single-stage injection blow molding (ISBM) is one of the blow molding methods. However, the difficulty in controlling the temperature during the injection molding process is considered its main disadvantage. In this study, ISBM process analysis of relatively thick walled containers such as cosmetic containers is carried out. The initial temperature distribution of the preform is deemed to be the most influential factor in the accuracy of blow molding for the thick vessel. In order to accurately predict this, all heat transfer processes of the preform are considered. The validity of this analytical procedure is verified by comparing the cross-sectional thickness with the actual product. Finally, the validated analytical method is used to evaluate the factors affecting the thickness of the final molded part. The ISBM analysis technique for thick walled vessels developed through this study can be used as an effective predictor for preform design and blow process.

  • Korea has the highest suicide rate among the OECD countries, and the suicide rate is highest among young adults in their 20s, most of whom are university students. Therefore, suicide among Korean university students is a public health issue that is of interest to us. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting the suicidal ideation of university students in Korea, and to use them as a basis to establish effective intervention for university suicide prevention through it. This was a cross-sectional descriptive study using convenience sampling method. The participants were 344 university students at universities in S and G cities. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and hierarchical regression analysis using with the SPSS/Win 23.0 program. There was a significant correlation between depression (r=.45, p<.001), drinking alcohol (r=.14, p=.008), social support (r=-.26, p<.001), quality of life (r=-.46, p<.001), and suicidal ideation. In the first step of hierarchical regression analysis, satisfaction of school life (${\beta}=.198$, p<.001) was the significant factor influencing the suicidal ideation. Explanatory power was 25.2%. In the second step of the hierarchical regression analysis, absence of parents (${\beta}=-.095$, p=.044), depression (${\beta}=.247$, p<.001), quality of life (${\beta}=-.280$, p<.001), and explanatory power were increased to 42.0%. The results of the study indicate the need to actively identify the group of university students in their 20s with high risk of suicide through continuous evaluation of depression, and to improve the quality of life as a method of preventing suicide. In addition, the effect of absence of parents on the suicidal ideation among Korean university students suggests that parental support may play an important role in suicide prevention.
