  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature and light conditions on the vigor and growth responses of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings in the nonheated plastic houses with triple and quadruple coverings during winter. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The growth in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and dry weight of each organ was reduced up to 50% in the triple coverings compared to quadruple ones. The greatest difference between the triple coverings and quadruple ones was the leaf area, showing two to five times larger in the quadruple ones. Therefore, the differences of the early environmental conditions during raising seedling stage was well reflected. 2. The leaf expansion in the early stage of seedling was delayed in the triple coverings and subsequently crop growth rate(CGR) significantly reduced. The specific leaf area (SLA) in the triple coverings was less than quadruple ones. The net assimilation rate (NAR) was increased in the early stage of seedlings and then reduced in the quadruple coverings. In triple ones, however, the great reduction showed at six weeks after sowing and then increased sharply. 3. The linear relationship among leaf area, total dry weight and leaf dry weight was observed in the all experimental areas, while between leaf area and crop growth rate only in the quadruple coverings, and between leaf area and net assimilation rate in both triple and quadruple ones. 4. The dry matter partitioned to the leaf increased up to six weeks after sowing in the triple coverings but reduced in the stem and root. However, the adverse results were obtained in the quadruple ones. 5. In the triple coverings, the number of branches showed the exponential increment while fruit weight showed linear increment in both triple and quadruple ones. Higher yield was obtained in the quadruple ones. 6. The shoot dry weight among the characteristics of seedlings was greatly contributed to the yield of red pepper after transplanting. Accordingly, one of the decisive criterion for good quality of red pepper seedlings was determined by the highest correlation between shoot dry weight of growing plant and fruit yield of pepper plant.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of row cover materials supported by flexible FRP frames with three kinds of non-woven fabric, and five kinds of net in leaf vegetable cultivation. Leaf radish (Raphanus sativus L.), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) were sown on May 21, 2003, and leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) was planted at the same date in Agricultural Research Center for Climate Change, Jeju, Korea. Net coverings showed higher light transmittance than in non-woven fabric coverings. The average air and soil temperatures increased by $0.3{\sim}1.0^{\circ}C$ in net coverings and $0.5{\sim}3.0^{\circ}C$ in non-woven fabric coverings, respectively. There was no difference in relative humidity among the covering materials. All the vegetables showed higher growths and yields in non-woven coverings than in non-covering. The yields increased 81% in leaf lettuce, 58% in leaf radish, and 93% in Chinese cabbage, respectively. In addition, the insect damages were considerably reduced in the row covering plots than in the control, especially in non-woven fabric coverings.

  • The groups generated by reflections in faces of Coxeter polyhedra in three-dimensional Thurstons spaces are considered. We develop a method for finding of finite index subgroups of Coxeter groups which uniformize three-dimensional manifolds obtained as two-fold branched coverings of manifolds of Heegaard genus one, that are lens spaces L(p, q) and the space S$^2$$\times$S$^1$.

  • The cyclically presented groups which arise as fundamental groups of cyclic branched coverings of the knot $5_2$ are studied. The fundamental polyhedra for these groups are described. Moreover the cyclic covering manifolds are obtained in terms of Dehn surgery and as two-fold branched coverings of the 3-sphere.

  • We construct a family of hyperbolic 3-manifolds by pairwise identifications of faces in the boundary of certain polyhedral 3-balls and prove that all these manifolds are cyclic branched coverings of the 3-sphere over certain family of links with two components. These extend some results from [5] and [10] concerning with the branched coverings of the whitehead link.

  • It is increasing the interest on the comfortable dwelling environment, while sound insulation performance of materials and elements used in building is falling down as they become thicker and lighter Therefore, sound insulation performance in building has become the most important factor determining the level of housing, especially for apartment that has common wall and floor with next neighbors. • In this paper we introduce a method of presenting 3-manifolds by polyhedral schemata with 2 vertices so that they may be naturally associated with given crystallizations of 3-manifolds. As applications, we explicitly present crystallizations of n-fold cyclic branched coverings of S over 2-bridge knots.

  • In this paper, we discuss the relationship between doubly-pointed Heegaard diagrams of (1, 1)-knots in lens spaces and Dunwoody 3-manifolds, and then give explicit representations of n-fold cyclic branched coverings of all (1, 1)-knots in S3 up to 10 crossings in Rolfsen's knot table as Dunwoody 3-manifolds.
