  • In case of indoor gymnastics training floor, in view of its characteristics, since it is simultaneously required the related smooth communication between the coach and the player, also the acoustic performance regarding to the clearness of music, besides the sport activity, the consideration about the acoustic character has entered the stage as an indispensable element. On such viewpoint, recently constructed dome-typed gymnastic training floor was optimized acoustic design with remodeling through acoustic simulation test. And acoustic satisfaction degree and reaction was attempted to investigate about the gymnastics training floor estimating value of human's psychological(sensual) degree using auralization that enables to experience the virtual sound field at the stage of design. As the result of investigation about the research on the space of object, it could be known that the valuation regarding to the acoustic performance of 'after-improvement' was distinctly more refined than that of 'before-improvement'. It is now considering that such result of the study can be utilized as the useful data which enables to improve the retrenchment effect of the construction cost as well as the acoustic capability, by means of the prediction control on the acoustic problem from the stage of design, for the occasion when the similar indoor sport gymnasium is planning to build for the near future.

  • The solid immersion lens (SIL) based near-field recording (NFR) system is considered as one of the high density optical data storage system. For the NFR servo system, tracking servo control is a difficult technology to maintain extremely small gap between SIL and media within one twentieth. This is because the track pitch is decreased for increasing the recording density. In this paper, we propose disturbance observer (DOB) and internal model principle (IMP) for disturbance rejection due to eccentricity of disk. The performance of tracking controller using DOB is increased by about 85%, 94%, 97% using Q filters that have bandwidths of 50Hz, 125Hz, 250Hz, respectively. Moreover, IMP based controller is effectively reduced the residual error.

  • This paper provides an overview on development of long-span bridges monitoring in Japan, with emphasis on monitoring strategies, types of monitoring system, and effective utilization of monitoring data. Because of severe environment condition such as high seismic activity and strong wind, bridge monitoring systems in Japan historically put more emphasis on structural evaluation against extreme events. Monitoring data were used to verify design assumptions, update specifications, and facilitate the efficacy of vibration control system. These were among the first objectives of instrumentation of long-span bridges in a framework of monitoring system in Japan. Later, monitoring systems were also utilized to evaluate structural performance under various environment and loading conditions, and to detect the possible structural deterioration over the age of structures. Monitoring systems are also employed as the basis of investigation and decision making for structural repair and/or retrofit when required. More recent interest has been to further extend application of monitoring to facilitate operation and maintenance, through rationalization of risk and asset management by utilizing monitoring data. The paper describes strategies and several examples of monitoring system and lessons learned from structural monitoring of long-span bridges in Japan.

  • Time-series data often contain one of the most valuable pieces of information in many fields including manufacturing. Because time-series data are relatively cheap to acquire, they (e.g., vibration signals) have become a crucial part of big data even in manufacturing shop floors. Recently, deep-learning models have shown state-of-art performance for analyzing big data because of their sophisticated structures and considerable computational power. Traditional models for a machinery-monitoring system have highly relied on features selected by human experts. In addition, the representational power of such models fails as the data distribution becomes complicated. On the other hand, deep-learning models automatically select highly abstracted features during the optimization process, and their representational power is better than that of traditional neural network models. However, the applicability of deep-learning models to the field of prognostics and health management (PHM) has not been well investigated yet. This study integrates the "residual fitting" mechanism inherently embedded in the wavelet transform into the convolutional neural network deep-learning structure. As a result, the architecture combines a signal smoother and classification procedures into a single model. Validation results from rotor vibration data demonstrate that our model outperforms all other off-the-shelf feature-based models.

  • This paper introduces a four-Pole Lorentz force type self-bearing motor in which a new winding configuration is proposed to enable the sing1e winding to function both as a synchronous PM motor and as a magnetic bearing. The Lorentz force type has some good points such as the linearity of control force, freedom from flux saturation, and high efficiency, unlike conventional self-bearing motors using a reluctance force. And also, compared with the previously proposed eight-pole type, this four-pole self-bearing motor is more profitable for high rotational speed. In this paper, mathematical expressions of torque and radial force in the proposed self-bearing motor are derived to show that they can be separately controlled regardless of rotational speed and time. For verification of the theory, a prototype is made, where a ring-shape outer rotor is actively controlled in two radial directions while the other motions are passively stable supposing the radial stability. Through some experiments. it is shown that the proposed scheme can provide high capability and feasibility for a small high-speed self-bearing motor.

  • In recent years, many researcher have been interested in the stability of a thin beam. Among them, Pai and Nayfeh[1] had investigated the nonplanar motion of the cantilever beam under lateral base excitation and chaotic motion, but this study is associated with internal resonance, i.e. one to one resonance. Also Cusumano[2] had made an experiment on a thin beam, called Elastica, under bending loads. In this experiment, he had shown that there exists out-of-plane motion, involving the bending and the torsional mode. Pak et al.[3] verified the validity of Cusumano's experimental works theoretically and defined the existence of Non-Local Mode(NLM), which is came out due to the instability of torsional mode and the corresponding aspect of motions by using the Normal Modes. Lee[4] studied on a thin beam under bending loads and investigated the routes to chaos by using forcing amplitude as a control parameter. In this paper, we are interested in the motion of a thin beam under torsional loads. Here the form of force based on the natural forcing function is used. Consequently, it is found that small torsional loads result in instability and in case that the forcing amplitude is increasing gradually, the motion appears in the form of dynamic double potential well, finally leads to complex motion. This phenomenon is investigated through the poincare map and time response. We also check that Harmonic Balance Method(H.B.M.) is a suitable tool to calculate the bifurcated modes.

  • Nonlinear dynamic characteristics of active piezolaminated plates are investigated with respect to the thermopiezoelastic behaviors. For largely deformed structures with small strain, the incremental total Lagrangian formulation is presented based on the virtual work principles. A multi-field layer-wise finite shell element is proposed for assuring high accuracy and non-linearity of displacement, electric and thermal fields. For dynamic consideration of thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena, the implicit Newmark's scheme with the Newton-Raphson iteration is implemented for the transient response of various piezolaminated models with symmetric or eccentric active layers. The bifurcate thermal buckling of symmetric structural models is first investigated and the characteristics of piezoelectric active responses are studied for finding snap-through piezoelectric potentials and the load-path tracking map. The thermoelastic stable and unstable postbuckling, thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena with several attractors are proved using the nonlinear time responses for various initial conditions and damping loss factors. Present results show that thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena can result in the difficulty of buckling and postbuckling control of intelligent structures.

  • This paper presents the system identification of a small-scale building model with an active mass driver and the controller design using Matlab program. As the AMD is a mechanical system which has a dynamic characteristic and whose mass can not be neglected compared to that of the building mass, the AMD-building interaction should be included in the controller design. The system identification is carried out for the AMD-building system with two acceleration inputs of the shaking table and the AMD and single acceleration output of the building. The mathematical model for the AMD-building is obtained and compared with the experimental result. The controller is designed based on the mathematical model using the optimal control algorithm of LQG strategy. The experimental results are compared with the numerical results. It is shown that both results are in good agreement in the system identification and the controlled responses.

  • HDD structure is excited by the dynamic motion of disk-spindle motor components. Those excitations which are generated at stator and magnet rotor, at bearings and from disk dynamics, are transmitted through motor spindle and flange to HDD cover and base. The operational deflection shape measurement can show the structural excitation patterns at the most influent frequency on the acoustic noise level. One of those components is the axial excitation along spindle, and the other is the local orbital excitation at contact area of motor flange and base. To make a reduction of those structural transmission excitations, the structure of spindle motor is modified to the direction of reinforcement at transmission path without change of bearings, magnet and coil. Some excitation of spindle motor component carrying out essential function is unavoidable. So it is the efficient way of HDD noise improvement to control the structural transmission of excitation.
