Effect of Partial Replacement of Soybean Meal with Palm Kernel Meal and Copra Meal on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Carcass Characteristics of Finishing Pigs

  • To study the effects of partial replacement of soybean meal (SBM) with palm kernel meal (PKM) and copra meal (CM) on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and carcass characteristics in finishing pigs, a total of 150 crossbred pigs (Landrace$\times$Duroc$\times$Yorkshire; average $52.11{\pm}1.08kg$ body weight) were alloted to five treatments, in a randomized block design. The treatments included 1) Control: without PKM or CM, 2) PKM2: 2% of palm kernel meal, 3) PKM4: 4% palm kernel meal, 4) CM2: 2% of copra meal, 5) CM4: 4% of copra meal. During the early finishing period (52~74 kg), growth performance was better in CM diets than in PKM diets or control diet, and in overall period (74~100 was lower (p<0.05) in PKM4 diet than the other diets. Nutrient digestibilies of PKM or CM substituted diets showed the tendency to be lower than those of control diet. In the early finishing period, total amino acid digestibilities of PKM and CM diets had the tendency to be lower than control diet, and in the late finishing period, they were lower (p<0.05) than control diet. Carcass length was longer (p<0.05) in the pigs fed 2% CM than in the pigs fed 4% PKM diet, but other carcass characteristics were not different among treatments. Although the dietary C14:0 content affected (p<0.05) on the C14:0 content in the carcass, the inclusion of PKM or CM in the diet did not affect the total saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids in the backfat of finishing pigs. Although it was not significant, supplementation of CM at the 2% and 4% of control group tended to decrease feed cost per kg weight gain by 2.89 to 1.42%, respectively. In conclusion, copra meal can be a valuable source of protein in the diet for finishing pigs and may replace other protein sources in pig diets to a considerable extent.

Evaluation of Acute Respiratory Infections(ARI) Control Programme in a Korean Rural Community -The Patterns of Antibiotic Prescription- (한 농촌지역에서 실시한 소아 급성호흡기감염 관리사업의 평가 -항생제 사용을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the program for the control of acute respiratory infections(ARI) in children in a Korean rural area(Yonchon county). Evaluating the program, we focused on the pattern of prescription and appropriateness of antibiotics prescribed by the health personnel who had participated in the ARI Control Program. It was implemented at the primary health care setting in rural area, such as district hospital, health subcenters, and health posts. During six-months programme monitoring period, medical records were reviewed and collected data were analysed by the pediatrician, research coordinator of this study. The baseline data were collected from medical records of the same period(six months) of one year before the implementation of the ARI programme. The study results were as follow : 1. Common cold was the most prevalent disease(78.7%. 594 cases) among the all ARI cases (755 cases). The less frequent cases were bronchitis(11.9%), acute pharyngitis(5.2%), and pneumonia(1.8%). 2. Significant reduction in the use of antibiotics was observed after the programme implementation. Ninety three(15.7%) of 594 common cold cases were received antibiotics compared with 282(35.2%) of 802 in the baseline period. In the cases of bronchitis and acute pharyngitis, the reduction rates were 15.1% and 23.2% respectively compared to the baseline period. 3. Mean duration of antibiotics prescription was 1.81-1.75 days, similar to the baseline data. 4. The appropriateness rate of antibiotics prescriptions were 84.3%(common cold), 35.6% (bronchitis) and 28.2%(acute pharyngitis). In the case of pneumonia, the antibiotics prescription was compatible to the criteria developed. 5. Pediatrician prescribed antibiotics more appropriately for all cases than general practitioners in health sub-center, and nurse practitioners in health posts. 6. Antibiotics therapy was shown to be of no effect in the treatment of the all ARI cases. At the 5 and 10 days check-up of common cold cases after visits, proportion of improved patients were 58.3% in the antibiotics-used group and 51.4% in the control group. In the other cases of ARI, the patterns of response were similar to common cold. None of the differences in outcome between the antibiotics-used and control group was statistically significant. This ARI programme may have substantial a substantial impact on antibiotics use at the public health institutions(district hospital, health subcenters, health posts) which are of major domain for primary health care in Korean rural areas.

Comparison of Growth Performance, Carcass and Meat Characteristics According to the Feeding Method of Concentrate and Total Mixed Fermentation in Hanwoo Steers (TMF와 배합사료의 급여방법이 거세한우의 성장 및 도체특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of the feeding method of total mixed fermentation (TMF) and concentrate feed on the growth performance, carcass and meat characteristics of late fattening Hanwoo steers. Twenty-four Hanwoo steers were used in this study. The control group was fed with concentrate feed + rice straw from the growing to the late fattening period, while the T1 group was fed with TMF from the growing to the early fattening period and concentrate feed + rice straw for the late fattening period. The T2 group was fed with TMF from the growing to the late fattening period. The average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were not different between the treatment and control group. Serum cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentrations were higher in the T2 groups than in the control group (p<0.05). The yield grade and quality grade were not different between the treatment and control group. The lightness of longissimus muscle was higher in the T1 group than in the control and T2 groups (p<0.05). Poly-unsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) of longissimus muscle was increased in the T2 groups than in the control group. Therefore, the method of feeding TMF and concentrate feed could have a positive effect on the lightness and fatty acid composition of longissimus muscle without affecting the growth and carcass grades of Hanwoo steers.

Physio-Chemical Studies on the After-Ripeng of Hot Pepper Fruit -Part VII. Effects of Ethephon on the Major Compoments- (신미종(辛未種) 고추의 추숙(追熟)에 관(關)한 생리화학적(生理化學的) 연구(硏究) -제7보 주요성분(主要成分)에 미치는 Ethephon의 효과(?果)-)

  • The physiological and chemical investigations to explain the after-ripening processes in got green pepper fruit were carried out by treating the fruit with ethephon either alone or with phenylalanine. The studied metabolic changes in fruit during after-ripening period was carbon dioxide and oxygen concentration in interior of the pepper fruit, total carotenoid, ${\beta}-carotene$, total sugar, and free reducing sugar in pepper fruit. These metabolic changes were explained inrelation to the color enhancement judged by the color score to explain the after-ripening processes. Ethephon treatment at 500 ppm significantly accelerated color enhancement as compared to the control and further ethephon treatment increased the number by 20 percent which was not possible in control during same after-ripening period. The oxygen concentration in interior of the pepper fruit during after-ripening period was increased in control when the color score (color enhancement) increased rapidly. However, with ethephon treatment, the oxygen concentration was decreased when the color score increased. Although total and free reducing sugar content were decreased during the after-ripening period total carotenoid and ${\beta}-carotene$ content was increased by 50 and 200 percent, respectively, over control. Also the capsaicin contents was increased by 20 percent by ethephon treatment over control. Although phenylalanine treatment did not affect the capsaicin content, capsaicin content tended to be increased by phenylalanine treatment when treated with ethephon.   • The maximum demand controller is an electrical equipment installed at the consumer side of power system for monitoring the electrical energy consumed during every integrating period and preventing the target maximum demand (MD) being exceeded by disconnecting sheddable loads. By avoiding the peak loads and spreading the energy requirement the controller contributes to maximizing the utility factor of the generator systems. It results in not only saving the energy but also reducing the budget for constructing the natural base facilities by keeping thc number of generating plants ~ninimumT. he conventional MD controllers often bring about the large number of control actions during the every inteyating period and/or undesirable loaddisconnecting operations during the beginning stage of the integrating period. These make the users aviod the MD controllers. In this paper. fuzzy control technique is used to get around the disadvantages of the conventional MD control system. The proposed MD controller consists of the predictor module and the fuzzy MD control module. The proposed forecasting method uses the SOFM neural network model, differently from time series analysis, and thus it has inherent advantages of neural network such as parallel processing, generalization and robustness. The MD fuzzy controller determines the sensitivity of control action based on the time closed to the end of the integrating period and the urgency of the load interrupting action along the predicted demand reaching the target. The experimental results show that the proposed method has more accurate forecastinglcontrol performance than the previous methods.

Effect of Exercise and Diet Control Program on Nitrogen Balance in Obese Children (단기간의 운동 및 식이 조절이 비만아동의 질소 평형에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of exercise and diet control program on nitrogen balance in obese children. The subjects of this study were five obese boys aged from 8 to 12 participating in the control period(C) for 3 days, exercise without energy deficit period(EEN) for one week, and exercise with energy deficit period(EED) far another one week, consecutively. The intensity of the exercise was 60-70% of HRmax and the energy was restricted at 493 kcal/day. Daily mean total energy intake was 2,152 $\pm$ 138kca1, 1,861 $\pm$ 138kca1, and 1,368 $\pm$ 87kca1 for the period C, EEN and EED, respectively. The body weight for EEN and EED decreased compared with the period C by average 1.2 $\pm$ 0.2kg and 1.8 $\pm$ 0.3kg, respectively. Of the body weight loss, the fat mass decreased bur 1.0 $\pm$ 0.3kg and 1.5 $\pm$ 0.5kg and the lean body mass by 0.2 $\pm$ 0.4kg and 0.3 $\pm$ 0.4kg, respectively. Of the daily mean nitrogen consumption was 9.1 $\pm$ 0.7g, 9.1 $\pm$ 0.8g and 7.1 $\pm$ 0.5g, the daily mean nitrogen excretion from feces was 1.3 $\pm$ 0.2g, 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1g and 0.7 $\pm$ 0.1g, and from urine was 6.7 $\pm$ 0.6g, 6.6 $\pm$ 0.5g and 6.7 $\pm$ 0.6g, for the period C, EEN and EED, respectively. Daily mean nitrogen balance excluding nitrogen excretion firm feces and urine indicated + 1.1 $\pm$ 1.0, +1.6 $\pm$ 0.6 and - 0.3 $\pm$ 0.9 for the period C, EEN and EED, respectively. Despite the negative indication during EED, there was no statistical signifiranre. The daily mean creatinine excretion was 0.5 $\pm$ 0.0g, 0.7 $\pm$ 0.1g and 0.6 $\pm$ 0.0g and the creatinine-height index(CHl) was 85.1 $\pm$ 6.7%, 83.8 $\pm$ 6.6% and 81.0 $\pm$ 6.5%, for the period C, EEN and EED, respectively, indicating little significant difference among the periods. Taking above results into consideration, it seems the exercise program conducted for this study did not substantially affect the nitrogen balance of the obese children, and may be used far the body weight control. Howeever, the adequacy of the energy restriction and amount of exercise applied to this study need to be further investigated as the nitrogen balance indicated negative and increasing tendency of the creatinine excretion showed during the EED compared with period C, despite the statistical insignificance.

Long-Day Period Before Short-Day Treatment Affects the Vegetative Growth of Greenhouse-Grown Cut Chrysanthemum cv, Reagan Improved (단일처리전 장일처리 기간이 온실재배 스프레이 절화국의 영양생장에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of long-day (LD) period before short-day (SD) treatment on the vegetative growth of greenhouse-grown cut chrysanthemum cv. Reagan Improved at Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands. Rooted cuttings of cut chrysanthemum cv, Reagan Improved were transplanted on 6th, 13th, 20th of September and all of them were treated with LD before SD treatment on 27th of September, The periods from transplanting until final harvest were 70, 77, and 84 days for 1, 2, and 3 week-LD treatment, respectively. The final plant height increased in the plot of 3 week-LD period and decreased in the plot of 1 week-LD period before the SD treatment. Total fresh weight and the leaf area were increased more in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that of 1 week-LD period, but the absolute growth rate after SD treatment was the same on plant growth rate and increase of the number of leaves in all treatments. The final dry matter production (g.m$^{-2}$ ) was increased more in the plot of 3 week-LD period than that of 1, 2week-LD period before SD treatment. Plant height and fresh weight were followed by the condition of LD period. In addition, dry mass production was highest in 3 week-LD period.
