  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the failure and strengths of carbon composite-to-aluminum single-lap bonded joints with 5 different bonding lengths. Joint specimens were fabricated to have secondary bonding of laminate and aluminum with a film type adhesive, FM73m. Tested joints have the bonding strengths between the values of aluminum-to-aluminum joints and composite-to-composite joints. In the joints with bonding length-to-width ratio smaller than 1, the strength decreases as the bonding length increases. In the joints with the ratio larger than 1, however, the strength converges to a constant value. Final failure mode of all the specimens was delamination. To use the maximum strength of the adhesive, it is important to design the joint to have strong resistance to delamination.

  • In this study we apply Support Vector Machine (SVM) to the prediction of geo-effective halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The SVM, which is one of machine learning algorithms, is used for the purpose of classification and regression analysis. We use halo and partial halo CMEs from January 1996 to April 2010 in the SOHO/LASCO CME Catalog for training and prediction. And we also use their associated X-ray flare classes to identify front-side halo CMEs (stronger than B1 class), and the Dst index to determine geo-effective halo CMEs (stronger than -50 nT). The combinations of the speed and the angular width of CMEs, and their associated X-ray classes are used for input features of the SVM. We make an attempt to find the best model by using cross-validation which is processed by changing kernel functions of the SVM and their parameters. As a result we obtain statistical parameters for the best model by using the speed of CME and its associated X-ray flare class as input features of the SVM: Accuracy=0.66, PODy=0.76, PODn=0.49, FAR=0.72, Bias=1.06, CSI=0.59, TSS=0.25. The performance of the statistical parameters by applying the SVM is much better than those from the simple classifications based on constant classifiers.

  • Fe-based powders, Fe-M(M=Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn), were prepared in Ar gas by mechanical alloying and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction indicates that the cubic lattice parameter increases for the M substitution. The distance of closest approach around M can explained the increase of lattice constant in Fe-M powders. $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectroscopy measurements on Fe-M samples indicates the coexistence of ferromagnetic phases and paramagnetic phase that are created by the distribution of local environment M on Fe atom. On the other hand, The spread of line-width on $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectra can be explained by the distribution of hyperfine magnetic fields. The results of quadrupole shift and isomer shift revealed that M substitutions in Fe-M powders didn't change both structure and the local charge distribution around Fe atom severely.

  • Characteristics of sleeve-gun arrays installed on the R/V Onnuri were analyzed and compared with survey data. In the case of cluster array, the beam width in the frequency range up to 814Hz is constant as $179.5^{\circ}$, and rapidly narrows in the frequency range of 814-1631Hz. However, in the case of long and wide arrays, as the frequency increases, the beamwidth decreases. The optimal frequency is 69Hz. the main lobe of vertical inclination has its maximum amplitude at phase angle $0^{\circ}$. The optimal frequency of cluster array which produces little side lobe is less than 1631Hz, and those of long and wide arrays are less than 108Hz. As a result, the cluster array produces a good source for high-resolution seismic survey, while the long and wide arrays are suitable for the survey of deep structures. The final high-resolution seismic section with cluster array was compared with that of long and wide arrays.

  • A simplified analytical procedure is presented to estimate the reduction of elastic lateral stiffness of steel moment frames arising from the radius-cut dogbone weakening. With the original radius-cut dogbone shape, it is almost impossible or too complicated to integrate analytically the mathematical expressions encountered when applying the conjugate beam method to compute the beam deflection component. In this study, the problem is circumvented by replacing the original radius-cut dogbone with an equivalent dogbone of constant width. The equivalence between the two is established by imposing an equal dogbone elongation criterion. This approach is justified by using a calibrated finite clement analysis. Then, the elastic lateral deflection components from the column, panel zone, and beam are derived for a typical beam-column subassembly. The derived results can be used to evaluate the reduction of the frame lateral stiffness. Case studies conducted within some practical ranges of frame configurations show that the reduction in frame lateral stiffness due to the presence of dogbone cut is on the order of 1 to 2 percent and is reasonably negligible in practical sense.

  • It was found that polypropylene shows rearrangement of crystal structure during the melting process. For the analysis of recrystallization behavior, the change of dynamic mechanical property, crystallinity, and crystal structure were studied by DSC, FT-IR, SAXS, and DMA. Melt-recrystallization-remelting behavior of iPP was clearly observed when iPP was cooled down kom the melt more rapidly. Elastic modulus of iPP increased during the recrystallization process but crystallinity of iPP shows constant value. Furthermore, the full width of half mean of SAXS pattern decreased about 30%, and intra-lamella ordering of iPP increased during the melt process but is was not found for sPP.

  • Because stellerite, belonging to the zeolite group, is much less common mineral than any other minerals in Korea, little mineralogical study has been done so far. Stellerite occurs on open surfaces of fractured zones in the Yucheon Granite associated with flowery tourmaline, Chongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Stellerite with $3{\sim}4\;mm$ length and $1{\sim}2\;mm$ width is characterized by an equigranular and euhedral form. Flat and elongated columnar crystals show well developed (010) face. Stellerite shows an intensive alteration process, possibly due to weathering or devitrification, as evidenced by microtextural analysis of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Water loss occurs at $161^{\circ}C$ while dehydroxylation occurs at $467^{\circ}C$ causing decomposition of the structure afterward. From its textural observation, it is concluded that stellerite formed rapidly at small undercooling, precipitated from residual melt during the late stage with relatively constant chemistry.

  • Differential equations and their solutions were formulated to describe the deflection of both temples and front frames and the pressure exerted by them varying parameters such as elastic modulus, thickness, length, width and shape of crosssection. The effect of such parameters on the deflections of both temples and front frames was illustrated by plotting the solutions of the derived equations. Deflection of temples was found to be maximum where the cross section was diamond-shaped and to be minimum with the rectangular cross section while thickness and cross section area of temples remain constant. The effect of parameters consisting of front frame on the deflection of front frames are very similar to those on temples. The central deflection and pressure of front frame initiated by the temple decreases as the length of temple increases. Detailed analysis of stresses at various parts of the temple will help design custom made spectacle frame as well as most comfortable frames.

  • Ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete is characterized with high tensile strength and ductility. This paper revealed the influence of fiber volume fraction on the tensile softening behaviour of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete and developed tensile softening model to predict the deformation capacity by finite element method analysis with experimental results. The initial stiffness of ultra high strength steel fiber-reinforced concrete was constant irrespective of fiber volume fraction. The increase of fiber volume fraction improved the flexural tensile strength and caused more brittle softening behaviour. Finite element method analysis proposed by Uchida et al. was introduced to obtain the tensile softening curve from three point notched beam test results and we proposed the tensile softening model as a function of fiber volume fraction and critical crack width.

  • Background: The aim of this study was to examine the resource allocation among the organs and the leaf morphology of Polygonatum humile. The data were collected from June 2014 to May 2015 in a natural P. humile stand of a temperate forest gap. Results: The dry weight of new rhizome ($R_0$) sharply decreased to the time of new shoot sprouting in next year and was constant for 2 ~ 3 years. However, dry weight of root on $R_0$ increased to the end of growth season and, thereafter, decreased slowly along the time elapsed. The correlation coefficients between the rhizome and the leaf sizes were 0.5 for the last year's rhizome ($R_1$) and 0.6 for $R_0$ and were significant at 0.1% level for $R_0$. The increase of one leaf a plant led to increase of the total leaf area, total leaf weight, and stem length. Moreover, the organ sizes' differences between two plants of the one leaf difference were almost significant at 1% level. In 11-leaf plant, the leaf length/width ratio and specific lea area increased to the second, relative leaf area to the fourth and relative leaf dry weight to the fifth, and thereafter, decreased to the last leaf. The differences in the values of these four parameters between two leaves on a stem were almost significant at 5% level. Conclusion: P. humile examined showed the close relationships between the last year's rhizome or this year's one and the shoot system (leaf and stem) sizes. The leaf number a shoot greatly influenced specific leaf area. P. humile's leaf might showed diverse morphology with leaf rank on a stem in a forest gap environment.
