  • Groundwater flow in confined aquifer and heat transport in underground geologic media are using same governing equation(line source) like well fuction. Therefore the conventional slope method using only later data obtained from in-situ thermal response test to determine the thermal conductivity of vertical geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is basically identical with one of Theis straight line method of aquifer test under artesian condition. In case that the pumping rate(Q, $m^3$/d) and drawdown(s,m) which are used for input data of existing hydrogeologic computer programs for aquifer test are replaced and converted to supplying heat energy per unit length of bore hole(Q/L,w/m or Kcal/h.m) and temperatures (T,$^{\circ}C$)measured at in and out-let of GHEX as in put data respectively, thermal conductivity around geothermal heat exchanger can be easily estimated without any special modification of the existing hydrogeologic computer program. Two numbers of time series temperature variation data obtained from in situ geothermal response test are analized using Theismethods(standard curve and straight line method) by using existing aquifer test program and conventional Slope method proposed by ASHRAE. The results show that thermal conductivity values estimated by two straight methods are identical and the difference of estimated values between standard curve methods and Slope method are also within acceptable ranges. In general, the thermal conductivity estimated from Theis straight linemethod gives more accurate value than the one of Slope method due to that Slope method uses only visual matching otherwise Theis method uses automatic curve matching estimation with reducing RSS.

  • This study on Gobongdond Wetlands have hydrogeomorpholosic charateristics in the southern-west of Gogongsan. This study area have been dissected and deep weathered. in geology, this area show banded gneiss consisting of alternated felsis and mafic layers. in geomorphology this area have 3 slope that surplyed the surface water and ground water, but have a little water source by surface water. The most of Gobongdong wetland's water sources are aquifer or confined aquifer, so this wetlands have many seepages or discharges. The characteristics of Soil have retained the wetland's water. Deep weathering made the parents soil into clay minerals.(siallitization) This clay minerals have a high water table.

  • Hydrologic responses to the 4September 2010 $M_W$ 7.1 and 22 February 2011 $M_W$ 6.2 Canterbury earthquakes ranged from near instantaneous co-seismic liquefaction and changes in groundwater levels, to more sustained (days to months) changes in river discharge, spring flow and groundwater level. There was some indication of a sustained change in aquifer properties. This paper presents some of the hydrographs from the September and February events, and compares the response to each event, briefly taking into account the location of the bore relative to each earthquake, together with other factors such as borehole depth. Over the months following the September earthquake, a pattern emerged of relatively short-term responses in the shallow aquifers and in the confined aquifer system, close to the coast. A longer term response appears to have occurred in inland, deep bores, where water levels 12 months after the September event were (in some cases) up to 20 metres higher than would have been expected based on simple modelling (see Figure 3). Some examples of these are highlighted.

  • We performed injection tests in a deep-seated confined aquifer to assess the potential of artificial recharge as a means of preventing saltwater contamination, thereby securing groundwater resources for the Nakdong Delta area of Busan City, Korea. The study area comprises a confined aquifer, in which a 10-21-m-thick clay layer overlies 31.5-36.5 m of sand and a 2.8-11-m-thick layer of gravel. EC logging of five monitoring wells yielded a value of 7-44 mS/cm, with the transition between saline and fresh water occurring at a depth of 15-38 m. Above 5 m depth, water temperature is 10-15.5℃, whereas between 5 and 50 m depth the temperature is 15.5-17℃. Approximately 950 m3 of fresh water was injected into the OW-5 injection well at a rate of 370 m3/day for 62 hours, after which the fresh water zone was detected by a CTD Diver installed at a depth of 40 m. The persistence of the fresh water zone was determined via EC and temperature logging at 24 hours after injection, and again 21 days after injection. We observed a second fresh water zone in the OW-2 well, where the first injection test was performed more than 20 days before the second injection test. The contact between fresh and saline water in the injection well is represented by a sharp boundary rather than a transitional boundary. We conclude that the injected fresh water occupied a specific space and served to maintain the original water quality throughout the observation period. Moreover, we suggest that artificial recharge via long-term injection could help secure a new alternative water resource in this saline coastal aquifer.

  • In aquifers connected hydraulically, the levels of groundwater respond to stream stages. Analytical solutions by Laplace transform and convolution integral are used to get some response patterns about hydrogeoiogic parameter such as hydraulic conductivity, specific storage in confined aquifer. This method has the advantage to do hydrogeologic parameter estimations only with stream stage changes.

  • The estimation of seawater intrusion into deep aquifers has been becoming an important subject in terms of site characterization for geological disposal of radioactive waste. Conventional direct-current resistivity methods have been used for ground water explorations and recently have been applied to environmental problems. However, electromagnetic methods are more practical and useful for such a deep investigation. We consider audio-frequency magnetotelluric (AMT) and surface-to-borehole electromagnetic (EM) tomography methods as promising tools for the investigation of deep aquifer. These methods were tested in the Hasunuma area, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Although the study area is in an urban area, high-quality AMT data were acquired, which was mainly accomplished by night-time data recording and remote-reference data processing. One-dimensional inversion results of the AMT data revealed two extremely conductive zones, which is consistent with the electrical conductivity profile of pore water in core samples. It can be interpreted as the seawater intrusions into both zones. However, the chemical analysis of the groundwater sampled in the deep zone suggests that this groundwater must be fossil seawater that had been confined during sedimentation processes. In addition, the permeability coefficient of the deep layer is very low. Thus the deep conductive zone corresponds to the fossil seawater regarded as being difficult to flow.

  • Pumping test was conducted to understand hydraulic conductivity for leaky confined aquifer with high permeability. Test aquifer was formed in $25{\sim}35\;m$ below ground surface at predetermined site of riverbank filtration which junction of Nakdong river and Milyang river in the Ttaan isle, Gimhae city, Korea Monitoring wells were located at intervals of 2 m and 5 m from pumping well in south-west direction (MW1 and MW2 wells) and northeast direction (MW3 and MW4 wells), respectively. Pumping test was continuously conducted for constant pumping rate of $2,500m^3/day$, hydraulic conductivity was estimated using AQTESOLV 3.5 program. Hydraulic conductivity were estimated to be $1.745{\times}10^{-3}m/sec$ for pumping well (PW), $2.452{\times}10^{-3}m/sec$ for between PW and MW1 wells, $2.161{\times}10^{-3}m/sec$ for between PW and MW2 wells, $2.270{\times}10^{-3}m/sec$ for between PW and MW3 wells and $2.591{\times}10^{-3}m/sec$ for between PW and MW4 wells. The function of hydraulic conductivity (K) as monitoring distance (d) were estimated to be logK = 0.0693logd - 2.671 for south-west direction (PW-MW1-MW2 line), logK = 0.0817logd - 2.655 for north-east direction (PW-MW3-MW 4 line). Scale exponent of hydraulic conductivity as test volume was estimated using Schulze-Makuch et al.(1999) method. Scale exponent of this aquifer was estimated to be 0.15. It means that test aquifer has very low heterogeneity. The radius of influence estimated using transmissivity, maximum groundwater level displacement, distance from pumping well and pumping rate during pumping test were 7.148 m for south-west direction and 6.912 m for north-east direction. The increasing rate of hydraulic conductivity from pumping well to maximum radius of influence were estimated to be 1.40 times for south-west direction and 1.49 times for north-east direction. Thus, heterogeneity of test aquifer was a little higher in north-east direction.

  • An analytical solution of groundwater flow is applied to design soil vacuum extraction for removing volatile organic compounds from the unsaturation zone. The governing equation of gas or vapor flow in porous media is nonlinear in that gas density depends on gas pressure. A linear equation suggested by researcher is similar to that of groundwater flow. The pressure drawdowns of confined and leaky aqufiers are calculated using Massmann's field data, and the pressure drawdowns are compared. A solution of Theis equation calculated by Massmann is modified using GASSOLVE9 program in this paper. The pressure drawdown using Hantush's analytical solution for leaky aquifer also compared to that of Massmann. Hantush's analytical solution gives good approximations to pressure drawdown.

  • This work describes the installation and preliminary measurements of an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) system to monitor the injection of recycled water into a confined aquifer in the area of Sindos (Thessaloniki N. Greece). The aim is to provide, through time-lapse ERT measurements and processing, geoelectrical images of rather increased volumetric sampling around and between the holes and to obtain improved understanding of the flow and transport of the injected water. The details about the general setting, the construction and installation of the ERT cables into the boreholes are explained in full. Preliminary measurements involving single and cross-hole ERT measurements were obtained and processed with a 2D inversion algorithm to produce images of the subsurface. Results depict a very good correlation between ERT images and the lithology and resistivity logs; an indication of the reliability of the approach.
