The purpose of this research is to investigate characteristics of lathe scrap for manufacturing fiber reinforced cementitious composites(FRCCs) to use lathe scrap as a alternative materials of steel fiber. It should be noted that the use of the lathe scrap for making FRCCs raised friendly environmental effect as well as economy because the lathe scrap was a by-product of steel manufactures. For this purpose, various steel scraps were collected from processing plants of metal and then their physical properties were evaluated. Also, steel scraps were classified and analyzed according to the KS D 2101 and then of these scraps, lathe scrap as a alternative materials of steel fiber was suggested. In addition, FRCCs containing lathe scraps were made according to their total volume fractions of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% for water-binder ratios of 30%, 40%, respectively, and then characteristics, such as the workability, compressive strength, and flexural strength of those were evaluated. It was observed from the test result that the compressive strengths at 7 and 28 days of FRCCs containing lathe scrap were slightly small but the flexural strengths at 28 days of those increased by 10% compared with plain concrete.
While over 90 percent of fishways are made up with concrete material, nature-like fishways are started to be established as a form of small stream using natural materials. Recently, the central government in collaboration with a university has proposed a 'Standard Model of Nature-like Fishway' with a purpose to provide as a national design standard of nature-like fishway. This study aims to criticize the proposed design model of nature-like fishway and to propose improvements by examining other international cases. As a result, we found problems and limitations of the proposed design model due to the lack of research and experience about making nature-like fishway in Korea. Especially, for designing bypass nature-like fishway we found the lack of studies about structure management strategies, establishment of rocks or pebbles inside the stream, and natural materials. In this sense, more studies about nature-like fishway design adaptable to our environment need to be conducted. In addition, since the proposed design standard for nature-like fishway has been created based on the limited examination of existing domestic cases, it is desirable to improve the design standard on the basis of hydrological and biological research so that they could be adapted effectively to regional and local contexts.

A test apparatus has been fabricated to simulate chemical effect on head loss through a strainer in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) containment water pool after a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). Tests were conducted under condition of same ratio of strainer surface area to water volume between the test appratus and the containment sump. A series of tests have been performed to investigate the effects of spray, existence of calcium-silicate with tri-sodium phosphate (TSP), and composition of materials. The results showed that head loss across the chemical bed with even a small amount of calcium-silicate insulation instantaneously increased as soon as TSP was added to the test solution. Also, the head loss across the test screen is strongly affected by spray duration and is increased rapidly at the early stage, because of high dissolution and precipitation of aluminum and zinc. After passivation of aluminum and zinc by corrosion, the head loss increase is much slowed down and is mainly induced by materials such as calcium, silicon, and magnesium leached from NUKONTM and concrete. Furthermore, it is newly found that the spay buffer agent, tri-sodium phosphate, to form protective coating on the aluminum surface and reduce aluminum leaching is not effective for a large amount of aluminum and a long spray.

The objective of this study is to assess the strengthening effects of fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) sheets such as Carbon fiber, Glass fiber, and PET(polyethylene terephthalate) on reinforced concrete flexural members. Variables of theoretical analysis are types of strengthening materials, material properties and amount of strengthening materials. A virtual flexural member without FRP sheets was created as a control specimen to understand the structural behavior of the non-strengthened specimen in terms of elastic and ultimate cross section. In total, 11 specimens including one non-strengthened and ten strengthened specimens were investigated. Various variables such as types of strengthening, strengthening properties, and amount of strengthening were studied to compare the behavior of the control specimen with those of strengthened specimens with regard to moment-curvature relationship. Results of theoretical analysis showed that the moment capacity of strengthened specimens was superior to that of the control specimen. However, the control specimen indicated the best ductility among all the specimens. As the amount of strengthening increased, flexural performance was improved. Furthermore, the results indicated that the ductile effect of members was affected by the ultimate strain of FRP sheets. The strengthening effect on the damaged member was similar to that on the non-damaged one since there was less than 10% difference in terms of flexural strength and ductility. Therefore, even if a damaged member is treated as non-damaged for analysis there is probably no noticeable difference.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the expansion of alkali-activated mortar based on ground granulated blast furnace slag containing reactive aggregate due to alkali-silica reaction. In addition, this study was particularly concerned with the behavior of these alkaline materials in the presence of reactive aggregates. The experimental program included expansion measurement of the mortar bar specimens, as well as the determination of the morphology and composition of the alkali-silica reaction products by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray(EDX). The experiment showed that while alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag mortars showed expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction, the expansion was 0.1% at Curing Day 14, showing that it is safe. After the accelerated test, SEM and BEM analysis showed the presence of alkali-silica gel and rim around the aggregate and cement paste. According to the EDX, the reaction products decreased markedly as alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag was used. In addition, for the substitutive materials of mineral admixture, a further study on improving the quality of alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag is needed to assure of the durability properties of concrete.

Because of the gap between the cognitive levels of the students and the curricular materials for the students to understand, the secondary school students feel science difficult and they get to avoid science as they go up to the higher grade. So it is absolutely needed to take the active measures to improve the cognitive development of the students through some special programs stimulating their cognitive process. This study investigated the effects of thinking science activity program devised for cognitive acceleration of the students. After implementing thinking science program to 181 7th grade students, the effectiveness of this program was examined through the analysis of covariance of both experimental and control groups. The result of the study showed that the cognitive level of the students in experiment group dealt with thinking science program was more accelerated than that of the students in control group who were just taught regular science curriculum. Especially, the effect was clear to the students in stages 1 and 2B. It was also found that the percentage of the students who promoted from concrete operational stage to formal operational stage was higher in experimental group than in control group. The results of the study implied that cognitive acceleration of the students might be possible through the specially designed materials such as thinking science program.
Geotextile is one of the most useful and effective polymer material in civil construction works and the main function of geotextile is separation, reinforcement, filtering and drainage. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. Therefore, the materials used in hydraulic and coastal structures are changing from the traditional rubble and concrete systems to the cheaper materials and systems. One of these alternatives employs geotextile tube technology in the construction of coastal and shore protection structures, such as embankment, see dyke, groins, jetties, detached breakwaters and so on. Geotextile tube technology has changed from being an alternative construction technique and, in fact, has advanced to become the most effective solution of choice. This paper presents case history of sea dyke filter construction using geotextile tube mattress and also, various issues related to the tube mattress design and construction technology.
This research conducted a survey targeting 238 dental employees in Daegu Gyeongbuk region in order to improve awareness on danger risk of dental materials henceforth by analyzing the awareness on material safety health data (MSDSs) and working environment characteristics that influence thereon. The operations of fractions are the main contents of number and operations in the elementary mathematics curriculum. They are also difficult for students to understand conceptually. Nevertheless, there has been little study on the addition and subtraction of fractions. Given this, this paper explored the connection between the national mathematics curriculum and its concomitant textbooks, the adequacy of when to teach, and the method of constructing each unit to teach addition and subtraction of fractions. This paper then analyzed elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks by three parts aligned with the general instructional flow: 'introduction', 'activity', and, 'exercise'. First, it was analyzed with regard to the introduction part whether the word problems of textbooks might reflect on students' daily lives as intended, how different meanings of operations would be expected to be taught, and how the subsequent activities were connected with the original word problems. Second, the main analysis of activity part of the textbooks dealt with how to use concrete or iconic models to promote students' conceptual understanding of operations and how to formalize the calculation methods and principles with regard to addition and subtraction of fractions. Third, the analysis of the part of exercise in the textbooks and workbooks was conducted with regard to problem types and meanings of operations. It is expected that the issues and suggestions stemming from this analysis of current textbooks and workbooks are informative in developing new instructional materials aligned to the recently revised mathematics curriculum.
