This study performed a finite element crash analysis of support structures made of various composite materials for road facilities. The effects of different material properties of composites for various parameters are studied using the finite element commercial package for this study. In this study, the existing finite element analysis of composite post structures using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to compare dynamic behaviors against car crash of the structures made of various composite materials. The several numerical examples show the comparison of the nonlinear dynamic effects for different materials.

In this work, virtual material characterization of 3D orthogonal woven composites is performed to predict the elastic properties by a full scale FEA. To model the complex geometry of 3D orthogonal woven composites, an accurate unit structure is first prepared. The unit structure includes warp yarns, filler yarns, stuffer yams and resin regions and reveals the geometrical characteristics. For this virtual experiments by using finite element analysis, parallel multifrontal solver is utilized and the computed elastic properties are compared to available experimental results and the other analytical results. It is founded that a good agreement between material properties obtained from virtual characterization and experimental results. Using the method of this virtual material characterization, the effects of inconsistent filler yarn distribution on the in-plane shear modulus and filler yarn waviness on the transverse Young's modulus are investigated. Especially, the stiffness knockdown of 3D woven composite structures is simulated by virtual characterization. Considering these results, the virtual material characterization of composite materials can be used for designing the 3D complex composite structures and may supplement the actual experiments.
Recently, metal-composite hybrid structures became a very attractive material system for various applications such as automobile and air vehicles due to their design flexibility as well as superior mechanical properties. On the other hand, recycling is a hot issue to reduce material wastes and environmental pollution, so that many countries made recycling regulations. But the recycling of metal-composite hybrid structures is not fully considered since the development and application are very early stage. We developed and optimized the recycling process for metal-composite hybrid structures based on the easy adaptation of the local recycling companies.
This paper investigates the transverse impact response for ultra lightweight cement composite (ULCC) filled pipe-in-pipe structures through a parametric study using both a validated finite element procedure and a validated theoretical model. The parametric study explores the effect of the impact loading conditions (including the impact velocity and the indenter shape), the geometric properties (including the pipe length and the dimensions of the three material layers) as well as the material properties (including the material properties of the steel pipes and the filler materials) on the impact response of the pipe-in-pipe composite structures. The global impact responses predicted by the FE procedure and by the theoretical model agree with each other closely. The parametric study using the theoretical approach indicates the close relationships among the global impact responses (including the maximum impact force and the maximum global displacement) in specimens with the equivalent thicknesses, proposed in the theoretical model, for the pipe-in-pipe composite structures. In the pipe-in-pipe composite structure, the inner steel pipe, together with the outer steel pipe, imposes a strong confinement on the infilled cement composite and enhances significantly the composite action, leading to improved impact resistance, small global and local deformations.

The researches on the development of composite material propeller with outstanding damping effects have been actively attempted for the reduction of radiation noise of underwater vehicle propeller. Composite material suitable for the flexible propeller has the following advantages, such as high specific strength and specific stiffness, low thermal expansion coefficient, high resistance against environmental deterioration, low possibility of corrosion due to cavitation, nonoccurrence of rapid fracture due to fatigue, easy molding of complicated shape, easy repair maintenance and low production costs, etc. For the confirmation of optimal fiber array structures of composite material for the production of the flexible propeller blades, in this study, mechanical characteristics of its specimens according to materials were obtained and structural characteristics of propeller blade were also examined according to materials and stacking fiber arrays.

A user friendly computer code(EMCOMST; Electro-Magnetic response for COMposite STructures) was developed which provides with computations of the response characteristics such as reflectance and transmittance to the incident wave angles, frequencies, composite thicknesses, ply orientations, and types of backplate as the linearly polarized transverse electro-magnetic wave is emitted to the advanced composite structures. In this investigation were reviewed the electromagnetic characteristics of the continuous orthotropic fiber-reinforced organic matrix composites with or without ferrite fillers, which are actively applied to low-weight and high-strength aircraft structures. Also were calculated the response of the three layered compound structures which have appropriately stacked above-mentioned materials as transmitting layer, absorbing layer, reflection layer, respectively under the specific thickness constraints for mechanical strength design requirements. For the composite structures presented in this study, minimum reflectance value less than -5㏈ can be obtained in the frequency range of 4 to 12 ㎓. In addition, analysis of structures attached isotropic radar absorbing materials(RAM) is facilitated by putting the material properties in the material input card entries adequately.
Applications of advanced composite material in construction field are tending upwards and development of all composite material bridges is making progress rapidly in home and abroad due to their high strength to weight ratio. This paper formulated the dynamic responses of the laminated composite structures subjected to moving load and analyzed the various dynamic behaviors using the finite element method. The nondimensionalized natural frequencies of a simply supported square-laminated composite plate are considered for verifications. Mode superposition and Newmark direct integration method are applied for moving load analysis. For structural models, dynamic magnification factor calculated for various velocities of the moving load and displacements characteristics of laminated composite structures due to the moving load are investigated theoretically Numerical results are presented to study the effects of lamination scheme, stacking sequence, and fiber angle for laminated composite structures during moving load. The various results on moving load and lamination through numerical analysis will present an important basic data for development and grasp the behavior of all composite material bridges.

In the present study, a new simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for laminated composite plates. Moreover, the number of unknowns of this theory is the least one comparing with the traditional first-order and the other higher-order shear deformation theories. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported antisymmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with the exact three-dimensional (3D) solutions and those predicted by existing theories. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending and free vibration behaviors of laminated composite plates.

Composite slab structures consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material show generally anisotropic structural behavior because of different stiffness between the major direction and sub-direction of deck plate, and also the structures can be regarded as the laminated slab structures. It is necessary for the composite deck slab structures to carry out the exact vibration analysis to evaluate the serviceability. Also, it is needed to evaluate the exact structural behavior of composite deck slab with a layered orthotropic materials. In this paper, the thickness of topping concrete and deck plate are used to calculate the material coefficient stiffness of a sub-direction, and an equivalent depth calculated from sectional stiffness of concrete and deck plate is applied to get the stiffness of a major direction. The stiffness of two layered composite plates with different depth is determined by laminated theory. It is concluded that the presented method can efficiently analyze the structural behavior of composite deck slab consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material in the practical engineering field.
