  • This paper reports on the evaluation of the initial stiffness of steel joints using component method as well as experimental tests. The so-called component method corresponds precisely to a simplified mechanical model composed of extensional springs and rigid links, whereby the joint is simulated by an appropriate choice of rigid and flexible components. An application to a cantilever beam-to-column steel joint is presented and compared to the experimental results obtained under cyclic loading condition. Comparison between numerical and experimental results allows to conclude that the numerical model is able to simulate, with a good level of accuracy for initial stiffness, the behaviour of beam-to-column joints.

  • In general, the characteristics of components which consist of multi-component system can not be the same. This paper proposes a maintenance model of multi-component system considering the characteristics of each component. In this paper, multi-component system is divided into three components-critical unit, major unit and minor unit, respectively. This paper determines the optimal replacement time of the system which minimizes total maintenance cost, optimal replacement period of major unit and initial stock quantity of minor unit within this optimal replacement time. Numerical examples are shown when the failure times of each unit have gamma distribution.

  • Component-based method for load model not only should include the performances of the load components, but also should take into consideration the core losses of transformers, the line losses and the capacitor banks. Especially, capacitor bank affects the accuracy of reactive load model in load modeling. But it is difficult to identify actual reactive powers of capacitor banks in power system for load modeling. This research improves the component-based modeling method including uncertain capacitor bank. The proposed method is hybrid technique, which adds the measurement-based method to the existing component-based method for reliable information of capacitor band. The results of case studies were presented to verify the validity of the proposed method.

  • This study presents a new information model for building a database which is used for the Damage Calculation in a Road network after Seismic outbreak (DCRS). The component which is required for information system and data analysis is divided by four factors. Those are Ground Motion Component, Road Network Component, Fragile Structure Component, and Cost Component. These components have various manners and procedures that build informations by each systems. In this study, applying the domestic system resources and these four factors, we presented the integrated evaluating system. finally, we also present the prototype of DCRS based on the ArcGIS. It is expected that developed prototype can play a role in more improved DCRS by advanced study.

  • The numbers of SCI paper or patent in science and technology are expected to be related with the number of researcher and knowledge stock (R&D stock, paper stock, patent stock). The results of the regression model showed that severe multicollinearity existed and errors were made in the estimation and testing of regression coefficients. To solve the problem of multicollinearity and estimate the effect of the independent variable properly, principal component regression model were applied for three cases with S&T knowledge production. The estimated principal component regression function was transformed into original independent variables to interpret properly its effect. The analysis indicated that the principal component regression model was useful to estimate the effect of the highly correlate production factors and showed that the number of researcher, R&D stock, paper or patent stock had all positive effect on the production of paper or patent.

  • A vast amount of experimental and analytical research has been conducted related to the seismic behavior and performance of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns. This research has resulted in a wealth of information on the component behavior. However, analytical and experimental data for structural systems with CFT columns is limited, and the well-known behavior of steel or concrete structures is assumed valid for designing these systems. This paper presents the development of an analytical model for nonlinear analysis of composite moment resisting frame (CFT-MRF) systems with CFT columns and steel wide-flange (WF) beams under seismic loading. The model integrates component models for steel WF beams, CFT columns, connections between CFT columns and WF beams, and CFT panel zones. These component models account for nonlinear behavior due to steel yielding and local buckling in the beams and columns, concrete cracking and crushing in the columns, and yielding of panel zones and connections. Component tests were used to validate the component models. The model for a CFT-MRF considers second order geometric effects from the gravity load bearing system using a lean-on column. The experimental results from the testing of a four-story CFT-MRF test structure are used as a benchmark to validate the modeling procedure. An analytical model of the test structure was created using the modeling procedure and imposed-displacement analyses were used to reproduce the tests with the analytical model of the test structure. Good agreement was found at the global and local level. The model reproduced reasonably well the story shear-story drift response as well as the column, beam and connection moment-rotation response, but overpredicted the inelastic deformation of the panel zone.

  • Before applying HTS power cable to the real utility. system analysis should be carried out by some simulation tools . Hereby the electrical power system analysis is very important for practical use of HTS devices. Nowadays PSCAD/EMTDC simulation tool is one of the most popular and useful analysis tool for the electrical power system analysis. Unfortunately the model component for HTS power cable is not provided in the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation tool In this paper. the EMTDC model component for HTS power cable has been developed considering critical current, critical temperature and recovery time constant that depend on the sorts of HTS wire. The numerical model of HTS Power cable in PSCAD/EMTDC was designed by using the real experimented data obtained from the real HTS 1G wire test. The utility application analysis of HTS power cable was also performed using the developed model component and the parameters of the real utility network in this study. The author's got good results. The developed model component for HTS power cable could be variously used when the power system includes HTS power cable, especially it will be readily analyzed by PSCAD/EMTDC in order to obtain the data for the level of fault current power flow, and power losses, and so on.

  • A very widely used analytical method (mathematical model), mentioned in Eurocode 3, to examine the connections' bending behavior is the component-based method that has certain weak points shown in the plastic behavior part of the moment-rotation curves. In the component method available in Eurocode 3, for simplicity, the effect of strain hardening is omitted, and the bending behavior of the connection is modeled with the help of a two-line diagram. To make the component method more efficient and reliable, this research proposed its advanced version, wherein the plastic part of the diagram was developed beyond the guidelines of the mentioned Regulation, implemented to connect the end plate, and verified with the moment-rotation curves found from the laboratory model and the finite element method in ABAQUS. The findings indicated that the advanced component method (the method developed in this research) could predict the plastic part of the moment-rotation curve as well as the conventional component-based method in Eurocode 3. The comparison between the laboratory model and the outputs of the conventional and advanced component methods, as well as the outputs of the finite elements approach using ABAQUS, revealed a different percentage in the ultimate moment for bolt-extended end-plate connections. Specifically, the difference percentages were -31.56%, 2.46%, and 9.84%, respectively. Another aim of this research was to determine the optimal dimensions of the end plate joint to reduce costs without letting the mechanical constraints related to the bending moment and the resulting initial stiffness, are not compromised as well as the safety and integrity of the connection. In this research, the thickness and dimensions of the end plate and the location and diameter of the bolts were the design variables, which were optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Snake Optimization (SO), and Teaching Learning-Based Optimization (TLBO) to minimization the connection cost of the end plate connection. According to the results, the TLBO method yielded better solutions than others, reducing the connection costs from 43.97 to 17.45€ (60.3%), which shows the method's proper efficiency.

  • Availability is an important characteristic of a repairable component. Iyer(1992) obtained the 'limiting efficiency'(not the `steady state availability') of the age-dependent minimal repair model which was first considered by Block et al.(1985). However the existence of the steady state availability of the model has not been reported. In this note, the existence of the steady state availability of the model is shown and a brief remark on the importance of the property is given.

  • A technique that provides prediction intervals based on a model called an empirical linear model is discussed. The technique, high-dimensional empirical linear prediction (HELP), involves principal component analysis, factor analysis and model selection. HELP can be viewed as a technique that provides prediction (and confidence) intervals based on a factor analysis models do not typically have justifiable theory due to nonidentifiability, we show that the intervals are justifiable asymptotically.
