An automatic verification method has been studied to determine the safety and operability of programmable logic controller (PLC) based systems. For the systematic and efficient verification, we have developed a conversion method from relay ladder logic (RLL) to the verification system description. RLL is a common representation used to document PLC programs for the sequential logic of the system such as the safety interlocks and the startup/shutdown procedures. Once the modules are developed, complex RLLs can be represented by the combination of modules. As a result we can verify complex PLC systems using the verification method including RLL modules. The developed modules are used to verify alarm systems and show that the method is valid.

Engineering design involves the specification of many variables that define a product, how it is made, and how it behaves. Before some variables can be determined, other variables must first be known or assumed. This fact implies a precedence order of the variables, and of the tasks of determining these variable consequently. Moreover, design of complex systems may involve a large number of design activities. In this paper, the activity-activity incidence matrix is considered as a representation of design activity analysis which mainly focuses on the precedence constraint. In order to analyze the activity-activity incidence matrix, a heuristic algorithm is proposed, which transforms an activity-activity, parameter-formula, and parameter-parameter incidence matrix into a lower triangular form. The analysis of the structured matrices can not only significantly reduce the overall project complexity by reorganizing few critical tasks in practice, but also aims at obtaining shorter times considering the solution structure by exploring concurrency.

For efficient development of rural facilities, 4 step optimum locational decision model was developed using agricultural-cum-industrial complex as a representative one ; formulation of locational goal system, ranking tabulation on components, determination of their significance values, calculation of their scores. The application results of the model to 3 typical case study areas(peri-urban flat, mountainous, coastal areas) showed relatively good representation of their areal characteristics.
In conclusion, the seemingly fuzzy and disorganized data of biology with thousands of different layers ranging from molecule to the Internet have refused so far to be mapped precisely and predicted successfully by mathematicians, physicists or computer scientists. Genomics and bioinformatics are the fields that process such complex data. The insights on the nature of biological entities as complex interaction networks are opening a door toward a generalization of the representation of biological entities. The main challenge of genomics and bioinformatics now lies in 1) how to data mine the networks of the domains of bioinformatics, namely, the literature, metabolic pathways, and proteome and structures, in terms of interaction; and 2) how to generalize the networks in order to integrate the information into computable genomic data for computers regardless of the levels of layer. Once bioinformatists succeed to find a general principle on the way components interact each other to form any organic interaction network at genomic scale, true simulation and prediction of life in silico will be possible.

For the representation of a complex object, the object is decomposed into several parts, and it is described by these decomposed parts and their relations. In genral, the parts can be the primitive elements that can not be decomposed further, or can be decomposed into their subparts. Therefore, the hierarchical description method is very natural and it si represented by a hierarchical attributed graph whose vertieces represent either primitive elements or graphs. This graphs also have verties which contain primitive elements or graphs. When some uncertainty exists in the hierarchical description of a complex object either due to noise or minor deformation, a probabilistic description of the object ensemble is necessary. For this purpose, in this paper, we formally define the hierarchical attributed random graph which is extention of the hierarchical random graph, and erive the equations for the entropy calculation of the hierarchical attributed random graph, and derive the equations for the entropy calculation of the hierarchical attributed random graph. Finally, we propose the application areas to use these concepts.
Representing a complex, three-dimensional shape, such as an automobile, requires a large amount of CAD data consisting of millions of approximated discontinuous points, which makes it difficult or even impossible to efficiently optimize the entire shape. For this reason, in this paper, function based design method is proposed to optimize the external shape of an automobile. A vehicle modeling function was defined in the form of a Bernstein polynomial to smoothly express the complex 2D and 3D automobile configurations. The sub-sectional parts of the vehicle modeling function are defined as section functions through classifying each subsection of a box model. It is shown that the use of the vehicle modeling functions has the useful advantages in an aerodynamic shape optimization.
In tropical geometry, the sum of two numbers is defined as the minimum, and the multiplication as the sum. As a way to build tropical plane curves, we could use Newton polygons or amoebas. We study one method to convert the representation of an algebraic variety from an image of a rational map to the zero set of some multivariate polynomials. Mikhalkin proved that complex curves can be replaced by tropical curves, and induced a combination formula which counts the number of tropical curves in complex projective plane. In this paper, we present close examinations of this particular combination formula.

This paper proposes a generalized NURBS model, called Volumetric NURBS or VNURBS for representing volumetric objects with multiple attributes embedded in multidimensional space. This model provides a mathematical framework for modeling complex structure of heterogeneous objects and analyzing inside of objects to discover features that are directly inaccessible, for deeper understanding of complex field configurations. The defining procedure of VNURBS, which explains two directional extensions of NURBS, shows VNURBS is a generalized volume function not depending on the domain and its range dimensionality. And the recursive a1gorithm for VNURBS derivatives is described as a computational basis for efficient and robust volume modeling. In addition, the specialized versions of VNURBS demonstrate that VNURBS is applicable to various applications such as geometric modeling, volume rendering, and physical field modeling.
For the diagnosis of arrhythmia in the heart system, the QRS complex of ECG signals is used in many cases. The rejection of the noise in ECG signals is important to acquisition of exact QRS complex. This paper presents some experimental results about instantaneous bandwidth estimation and noise rejection of ECG signals with the purpose of rejection of the 60 Hz power noise and the motion artifacts such as EMG signals and contact noise. ECG signals corrupted by noise are cleaned by using the variable bandwidth filter. For the filtering of ECG signals with noise, the instantaneous bandwidth of the signals is estimated by analysis of time-frequency representation of ECG signal.
Representing planar Pythagorean hodograph (PH) curves by the complex roots of their hodographs, we standardize Farouki's double cubic method to become the undetermined junction point (UJP) method, and then prove the generic existence of solutions for general $C^1$ Hermite interpolation problems. We also extend the UJP method to solve $C^2$ Hermite interpolation problems with multiple PH cubics, and also prove the generic existence of solutions which consist of triple PH cubics with $C^1$ junction points. Further generalizing the UJP method, we go on to solve $C^2$ Hermite interpolation problems using two PH quintics with a $C^1$ junction point, and we also show the possibility of applying the modi e UJP method to $G^2[C^1]$ Hermite interpolation.
