  • The meanings and roles of community have been changed. Traditional community theories hinged on the neighborhood have been threatened by the alternative concept of 'communities without propinquity'. Embracing unprecedented development of transportation, information and communication technologies, Propinquity of community has not been a precondition. This paper reviews the development of community theories with a frame of 'communities without propinquity'. Furthermore, applying social network analysis(SNA) approaches, it explores the communality of Topgol Comic Book Space, located in Goesan, Chungbuk and examines spatial characters. Visitors' networks of Topgol Comic Book Space builda up national coverage and expands. It functions as a field of testing various activities without explicit 'fixed purpose'. The case exemplifies a community, continuously enlarging the spatial and social boundaries, performing a series of activities, and connecting both the outside and the local.

  • Energy harvesting (EH) and network coding (NC) have emerged as two promising technologies for future wireless networks. In this paper, we combine them together in a single system and then present a time switching-based network coding relaying (TSNCR) protocol for the two-way relay system, where an energy constrained relay harvests energy from the transmitted radio frequency (RF) signals from two sources, and then helps the two-way relay information exchange between the two sources with the consumption of the harvested energy. To evaluate the system performance, we derive an explicit expression of the outage probability for the proposed TSNCR protocol. In order to explore the system performance limit, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the system outage probability. Since the problem is non-convex and cannot be directly solved, we design a genetic algorithm (GA)-based optimization algorithm for it. Numerical results validate our theoretical analysis and show that in such an EH two-way relay system, if NC is applied, the system outage probability can be greatly decreased. Moreover, it is shown that the relay position greatly affects the system performance of TSNCR, where relatively worse outage performance is achieved when the relay is placed in the middle of the two sources. This is the first time to observe such a phenomena in EH two-way relay systems.

  • In this paper, we propose a new skyline query processing scheme to enhance accuracy of query processing and communication cost in mobile P2P environments. The proposed scheme consists of three stages such as the pre-skyline processing, the query transmission range extension policy, and the continuous skyline query processing. In the pre-skyline processing, a peer selects the candidate filtering objects who have the potential to be selected. By doing so, the proposed scheme reduces the filtering cost when processing the query. In the query transmission range extension policy, we have improved the accuracy by extending the query transmission range. In addition, it can handle continuous skyline query by performing the monitoring after the first skyline query processing. In order to show the superiority of the proposed method, we compare it with the existing schemes through performance evaluation. As a result, it was shown that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes.

  • In this paper, we investigate secure communication with the presence of multiple eavesdroppers (Eves) in a two-tier downlink dense heterogeneous network, wherein there is a macrocell base station (MBS) and multiple femtocell base stations (FBSs). Each base station (BS) has multiple users. And Eves attempt to wiretap a macrocell user (MU). To keep Eves ignorant of the confidential message, we propose a physical-layer security scheme based on cross-layer cooperation to exploit interference in the considered network. Under the constraints on the quality of service (QoS) of other legitimate users and transmit power, the secrecy rate of system can be maximized through jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors of MBS and cooperative FBSs. We explore the problem of maximizing secrecy rate in both non-colluding and colluding Eves scenarios, respectively. Firstly, in non-colluding Eves scenario, we approximate the original non-convex problem into a few semi-definite programs (SDPs) by employing the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique and conservative convex approximation under perfect channel state information (CSI) case. Furthermore, we extend the frame to imperfect CSI case and use the Lagrangian dual theory to cope with uncertain constraints on CSI. Secondly, in colluding Eves scenario, we transform the original problem into a two-tier optimization problem equivalently. Among them, the outer layer problem is a single variable optimization problem and can be solved by one-dimensional linear search. While the inner-layer optimization problem is transformed into a convex SDP problem with SDR technique and Charnes-Cooper transformation. In the perfect CSI case of both non-colluding and colluding Eves scenarios, we prove that the relaxation of SDR is tight and analyze the complexity of proposed algorithms. Finally, simulation results validate the effectiveness and robustness of proposed scheme.

  • Background: Xanthosine treatment has been previously reported to increase mammary stem cell population and milk production in cattle and goats. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms associated with the increase in stem cell population and milk production remain unclear. Methods: Primiparous Beetal goats were assigned to the study. Five days post-partum, one mammary gland of each goat was infused with xanthosine (TRT) twice daily ($2{\times}$) for 3 days consecutively, and the other gland served as a control (CON). Milk samples from the TRT and CON glands were collected on the 10th day after the last xanthosine infusion and the total RNA was isolated from milk fat globules (MEGs). Total RNA in MFGs was mainly derived from the milk epithelial cells (MECs) as evidenced by expression of milk synthesis genes. Significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were subjected to Gene Ontology (GO) terms using PANTHER and gene networks were generated using STRING db. Results: Preliminary analysis indicated that each individual goat responded to xanthosine treatment differently, with this trend being correlated with specific DEGs within the same animal's mammary gland. Several pathways are impacted by these DEGs, including cell communication, cell proliferation and anti-microbials. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into transcriptomic changes in milk producing epithelial cells in response to xanthosine treatment. Further characterization of DEGs identified in this study is likely to delineate the molecular mechanisms of increased milk production and stem or progenitor cell population by the xanthosine treatment.

  • Recently, advances in mobile devices and wireless communication technologies require research on various location-based services. As a result, many studies on processing k-nearest neighbor query, which is most im portant one in location-based services, have been done. Most of existing studies use pre-computation technique to improve retrieval performance by computing network distance between POIs and nodes beforehand in spatial networks. However, they have a drawback that they can not deal with effectively the update of POIs to be searched. In this paper, we propose a distributed grid scheme using S-GRID to overcome the disadvantage of the existing work as well as to manage the location information of a large number of moving objects in efficient way. In addition, we describe a k-nearest neighbor(k-NN) query processing algorithm for the proposed distributed grid scheme. Finally, we show the efficiency of our distributed grid scheme by making a performance comparison between the k-NN query processing algorithm of our scheme and that of S-GRID.

  • mVoIP (mobile Voice over Internet Protocol) service is a technology to transmit voice data through an IP network using mobile device. mVoIP provides various supplementary services with low communication cost. It can maximize the availability and efficiency by using IP-based network resources. In addition, the users can use voice call service at any time and in any place, as long as they can access the Internet on mobile device easily. However, SIP on mobile device is exposed to IP-based attacks and threats. Observed cyber threats to SIP services include wiretapping, denial of service, and service misuse, VoIP spam which are also applicable to existing IP-based networks. These attacks are also applicable to SIP and continuously cause problems. In this study, we analysis the threat and vulnerability on mVoIP service and propose several possible attack scenarios on existing mobile VoIP devices. Based on a proposed analysis and vulnerability test mechanism, we can construct more enhanced SIP security mechanism and stable mobile VoIP service framework after eliminating its vulnerability on mobile telephony system.

  • In the Internet of Things (IoT) era, objects are connected to each other by wired and wireless networks, and information is exchanged whenever necessary. Channel and network environments change over time; thus, a carrier sensing function that identifies whether signals containing information are present in the channel is essential. The carrier sensing circuit of a wireless communication system determines the receiver sensitivity, and the receiver sensitivity is closely related to the service coverage and service quality of the system. As the receiver sensitivity decreases, the service coverage increases but it becomes sensitive to noise. However, as the receiver sensitivity increases, the service coverage decreases but it becomes insensitive to the noise. Therefore, carrier sensing design and optimization are very important from the viewpoint of the receiver sensitivity and noise sensitivity. This paper proposes an effective carrier sensing technique from the viewpoint of the receiver sensitivity for the long range IoT.

  • Streaming video has become a popular form of transferring media over the wired/wireless network. TCP-friendly rate control (TFRC) is used as a streaming media transport protocol. Using the TCP congestion response function and current network conditions, TFRC adjusts its sending rate to yield the maximum TCP-friendly throughput. Since TFRC was designed for applications that would prefer to maintain a slowly-changing sending rate, it is less responsive to changes in handover between wireless heterogeneous networks such as 3G network, WLAN, and so on. This paper shows a new TFRC method for vertical handover over wireless heterogeneous network. The proposed TFRC method has features of low quality interruption and fast rate adaptation to a new target network. The simulation results show that the proposed one provides better QoS and throughput support than the traditional TFRC scheme during vertical handover.

  • One of the most important factors on the performance of the distributed systems is the effective distribution of the software components, There have been a lot of researches on partitioning and allocating the task-based system, while the studies on the allocating the objects of the object-oriented system into the distributed object environments are very little relatively. In this paper. we defines the graph model for partitioning the existing C++ application and allocating the C++ objects into CORBA-base distributed system, In addition, we propose a distributed object allocation algorithm based on this graph model. The performance of distributed systems is determined by the concurrency between objects, the load balance among the processors and the communication cost on the networks. To search for the solutions optimizing the above three factors simultaneously, the object allocation algorithm of this paper is based on the Niched Pareto Genetic Algorithm (NPGA). We performed the experiment on the typical C++ application and CORBA system to prove the effectiveness of our graph model and our object allocation algorithm.
