The Brazil, Russia, India China and South Africa (BRICS) group has emerged as a collection of large economies which are outside the traditional groups of industrialised "first world" economies and which have altered the global distribution of economic power. The basis of their emergence is a combination of their size and growth rates, and the fact that they lie outside the established centres of global economic power. As such, they have "diversified" the power base of the global economic order. The question which is asked in this paper is whether the phenomenon of the BRICS goes beyond this to mark the start of a possible challenge to the neoliberal orthodoxy which emerged as the globally dominant policy paradigm since the collapse of the Soviet Union. This paper develops and uses a "modes of innovation" approach to explore the potential of the BRICS to constitute a structural rupture in the current globally dominant neoliberal mode of innovation. This question is important since, in the absence of this rupture, the remarkable development trajectory of the BRICS will serve to reinforce the legitimacy of the global orthodoxy. The paper first articulates the modes of innovation concept and then proceeds to locate the BRICS systems of innovation within the current globally dominant mode. On this basis it then provides an appraisal of the possible impact of the BRICS on the evolutionary path of the global system of innovation.

Hybrid electric propulsion systems (H-EPSs) are an intermediate step for integrated full electric propulsion warships. H-EPSs are a dynamic combination of mechanical and electrical propulsion systems to achieve the required mission performances. The system modes could adapt to meet the requirement of the various operation conditions of a warship. This paper presents a configuration and operating modes of H-EPSs considering the operation conditions of a destroyer class warship. The system has three propulsion modes, namely, motoring mode, generating mode [power take off (PTO) mode], and mechanical mode. The PTO mode requires a careful fuel efficiency analysis because the fuel consumption rate of propulsion engines may be low compared with the generator's engines depending on the loading power. Therefore, the calculation of fuel consumption according to the operating modes is performed in this study. Although the economics of the PTO mode depends on system cases, it has an advantage in that it ensures the reliability of electric power in case of blackout or minimum generator operation.
This paper presents the materials analysis for combination of working modes of Magnetorheological (MR) damper. The materials were selected based on the optimum magnetic field strength at the effective areas in order to obtain a better design of MR damper. The design of electromagnetic circuit is one of the critical criteria in designing MR dampers besides the working mechanism and the types of MR damper. The increase in the magnetic field strength is an indication of the improvement in the damping performance of the MR damper. Eventually, the experimental test was performed under quasi-static loading to observe the performances of MR damper in shear mode, squeeze mode and mixed mode. The results showed that the increment of forces was obtained with the increased current due to higher magnetic flux density generated by electromagnetic coils. In general, it can be summarized that the combination of modes generates higher forces than single mode for the same experimental parameters throughout the study.
Probabilistic Risk Assessment considering statistically random variables is performed for the preliminary design of a Arch Bridge. Component reliabilities of girders have been evaluated using the response surfaces of the design variables at the selected critical sections based on the maximum shear and negative moment locations. Response Surface Method(RSM) is successfully applied for reliability analyses for this relatively small probability of failure of the complex structure, which is hard to be obtained by Monte-Carlo Simulations or by First Order Second Moment Method that can not easily calculate the derivative terms of implicit limit state functions. For the analysis of system reliability, parallel resistance system composed of girders is changed into parallel series connection system. The upper and lower probabilities of failure for the structural system have been evaluated and compared with the suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes. The suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes reveals the unexpected combinations of element failures in significantly reduced time and efforts compared with the previous permutation method or system reliability analysis method.

The modal combination methods are studied for estimating the maximum structural responses in the seismic analysis by the response spectrum method. The most important problem in the modal combination is how to account for the correlation between the modal responses and to combine the high frequency modes (of which frequencies are greater than that at which the spectral acceleration approximately returns to the ZPA(zero period acceleration)). In this study, therefore, the widely known methods are investigated and compared among the numerous ones proposed up to now including those recommended in Regulatory Guide 1.92. The applicability of each method is investigated through example analyses also.
The changes of conventional clarification process and an increase in treatment cost are required to meet increasingly stringent regulations related to the treated water quality. Although many enhanced coagulations have introduced to improve organic matter removal, the results to remove color, nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic material have not been very efficient yet. The removal of waste matters such as SS, organic matter, color and turbidity contained in dyeing wastewater was carried out by using the combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate. The flocculation was investigated as a function of coagulant dose, pH, mixing time, settling time and coagulant addition modes such as the sequential addition of the two coagulants and the simultaneous addition of them. The flocculation by the combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate was compared with that by aluminum sulfate. The mechanism of flocculation was investigated as well. About 84% of color in dyeing watewater was removed by flocculation with combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate.

In this context as new flocculation using calcium hydroxide and magnesum sulfate was carried out. The removal of waste matters such as SS, organic matter, COD, nitrogen and phosphorus contained in stock wastewater was carried out by using the combination of calcium hydroxide and magnesium sulfate. In order to study the seismic response of the main plant of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) structure of the CAP1400 nuclear power plant under the influence of different high-mode vibration, the 1/7 model structure was manufactured and its dynamic characteristics was tested. Secondly, the finite element model of SRC frame-bent structure was established, the seismic response was analyzed by mode-superposition response spectrum method. Taking the combination result of the 500 vibration modes as the standard, the error of the base reactions, inter-story drift, bending moment and shear of different modes were calculated. Then, based on the results, the influence of high-mode vibration on the seismic response of the SRC frame-bent structure of the main plant was analyzed. The results show that when the 34 vibration modes were intercepted, the mass participation coefficient of the vertical and horizontal vibration mode was above 90%, which can meet the requirements of design code. There is a large error between the seismic response calculated by the 34 and 500 vibration modes, and the error decreases as the number of modes increases. When 60 modes were selected, the error can be reduced to about 1%. The error of the maximum bottom moment of the bottom column appeared in the position of the bent column. Finally, according to the characteristics of the seismic influence coefficient αj of each mode, the mode contribution coefficient γj•Xji was defined to reflect the contribution of each mode to the seismic action.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is one of the field-responsive fluids that is of interest to many researchers due to its high yield stress value, which depends on the magnetic field strength. Similar to electrorheological (ER) fluid, the combination of working modes is one of the techniques to increase the performance of the fluids with limited focus on MR fluids. In this paper, a novel MR testing cell incorporated with valve, shear and squeeze operational modes is designed and constructed in order to investigate the behaviour of MR fluid in combined mode. The magnetic field distribution in the design concept was analyzed using finite element method in order to verify the effective areas of each mode have the acceptable range of flux density. The annular gap of valve and shear were fixed at 1 mm, while the squeeze gap between the parallel circular surfaces was varied up to 20 mm. Three different coil configurations, which were made up from 23 SWG copper wires were set up in the MR cell. The simulation results indicated that the magnetic field distributed in the squeeze gap was the highest among the other gaps with all coils were subjected to a constant applied current of 1 A. Moreover, the magnetic flux densities in all gaps were in a good range of magnitude based on the simulations that validated the proposed design concept. Hence, the 3D model of the MR testing cell was designed using Solidworks for manufacturing processes.
