A taxonomic study of Korean Berosus Leach is presented. Four species [Berosus (Berosus) japonicus Sharp, Berosus (Berosus) punctipennis Harold, Berosus (Enoplurus) lewisius Sharp, and Berosus (Enoplurus) spinosus (Steven)] in two subgenera are recognized, one of which [B. (E.) spinosus] is reported for the first time in Korea. We also found that B. (B.) puchellus MacLeay previously recorded in Korea was an incorrect identification of B. (E.) lewisius Sharp. Habitus and SEM photographs, key and diagnoses of the known species are provided.
Feeding habits of Gobiobotia brevibarba were investigated at Hongcheon River of Bangokri, Seomyon, Hongcheongun, Kangwondo from January to December, 2000. G. brevibarba was a carnivore and consumed mainly Ephemeroptera, Tricoptera and Diptera. Small quantities of Plecoptera and Coleoptera were included as a minor food items. The species showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Individuals of small size (21~50 mm SL) fed mainly on small prey organisms such as Diptera and Ephemeroptera. However, larger Tricoptera were heavily selected with increasing fish size. The relative proportion of these food items changed with season. The prey selection indices for Ephemeroptera were positively selected in spring, summer and autumn, and negatively selected in winter, Diptera were positively selected in March, October and November.
In recent years, many research revealed plant-insect interactions are becoming unstable because of climate change, human activities and grazing effect. In this work, it is aimed to disclose that how climate of two different years is influencing on insect community at certain locality in Mongolia. The data on the insect community are collected, covering full flowering season from June to August in 2014 and 2015. In order to include all species of insects in Udleg Station, data was collected in three different sites. One of them was around edge of forest, another one was in ungrazed area or inside the fence that has been kept for more than 9 years and last one was in grazed area. Weather was a perceptible difference during two year's study. This climate differences significantly influenced on the insect community. In 2014, overall 305 insect species were recorded, in which 124 insect species in order of Diptera, 44 in Lepidoptera, 33 in Coleoptera, 31 in Hemiptera, and 73 in Hymenoptera were determined. But in 2015, these number of species noticeably decreased, and total 150 insect species were recorded, in which 58 in Diptera, 26 in Lepidoptera, 13 in Coleoptera, 12 in Hemiptera, and 41 in Hymenoptera were determined.
An investigation of fauna and community of insects in Gotjawal Terrain, Jeju-do, had been conducted with a way of black light trap from July to September, 2005. The investigated insects were classified into 217 species, 75 families, and 11 orders respectively. Coleoptera that occupied 55.3 percent among them and was consisted of 120 species was the richest group and Hemiptera followed it. The density of Physopelta gutta was highest but Physopelta cincticollis was overall the dominant species in all sampling areas. The species diversity index was highest at Jocheon-Hamdeog Gotjawal in Jeju-do, while it was lowest in Gujwa-Sungsan Gotjawal. Clustering analysis revealed that the insect communities of four localities were grouped in only one cluster. Included in the species unreported in Jeju Island were Menida musiva and Pentatoma japonica in Hemiptera, Philonthus wuesthoffi in Coleoptera, and Phanerotoma flava in Hymenoptera.
To isolate naturally occurring novel Bacillus thuringiensis strains for useful pest con시 agents, A total of 64 isolates of B. thuringiensis producing spore and crystal were obtained from 583 soil samples in Korea. Toxicity of isolates was assayed against Lepidoptera (Bombyx ori), Diptera (Culex pipens) and Coleoptera (Sitophilus oryzae), respectively. The results showed that B. thuringiensis isolates toxic Lepidoptera are 42.2% , both Lepidoptera and Diptera are 31.3% and Diptera are 20.3%, demonstrating that spectrum of insecticidal activity of B. thuringiensis isolates is various. But no B. thuringiensis isolates have toxicity against Coleoptera.
Fourteen species of the genus Gonocephalum and one species of the genus Opatrum (Tenebrionidae, Opatrini) from Korea have been previously recorded. They are taxonomically reviewed based on many faunistic reports and research papers. We also examined many specimens including voucher materials of the previous studies. Among the recorded species, G. sabulosum is excluded because it was misidentified for the individual variation of Opatrum subaratum. We couldn’t find any Korean materials of four species (G. japanum, G. bilinearum, G. outreyi, G. malayanum), and used the materials determined from other countries. Key to 13 species of the genus Gonocephalum, illustrations of adults and male aedeagus are provided.
This study was carried out to investigate the changes of insects diversity and host plants from 1998 to 2001 after the construction of an insect park in Suwon in Korea. After the construction in 1997 the insect species and populations have been increased yearly to date. A total of 343 species out of 138 families of 11 orders was surveyed at the park from April to November in 2001. The number of species increased from April to July and showed a peak in June. Coleoptera was a dominant order, and Dolichus halensis (Schaller) of Coleoptera, Artogeia rapae (Linne) of Lepidoptera, and Liorhyssus hyaalinus (Fabricius) of Hemiptera were dominant species.
The present study was conducted to investigate the developmental characteristics of Propylea japonica Thunberg (Coleoptera : Coccinellidae), a predator of aphids under laboratory conditions. The development times of the egg and immature stages of Propylea japonica were investigated at ten constant temperatures(15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, 35 and $38{\pm}1^{\circ}C$; 14L:10D; $60{\pm}5%$ RH). Development time was longest at $17.5^{\circ}C$. The developmental periods of P. japonica from the time of egg oviposited to adult emergence was 36.9 days at $17.5^{\circ}C$, and it decreased ash temperature increasing. Threshold temperature of development and degree days of the P. japonica from egg to adult were $11.9^{\circ}C$ and 196.0 respectively. The Briere 2 and Lactin 2 modes were best fitted for all development stages. The distribution of completion of each development stage was explain relatively well that 2-parameter, 3-parameter and Logistic model except egg and pupal stage.
The walnut leaf beetle, Gastrolina depressa, belongs to family Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera), and is one of the major pests of walnut trees. G. depressa eggs were oval and dark orange. The three G. depressa larval instars were gray in color. The larval period was approx. 8.14 days ($24^{\circ}C$, 16L:8D). Adults of both sexes were dark blue, and females were larger than males. Overwintered adults emerged in late April, and laid eggs in clusters on young leaves of the host tree. Mature 3rd instar larvae pupated after a short prepupal period. Adults emerged starting mid-May and entered into diapause shortly afterward.
This study was conducted to investigate the morphological characteristics, overwintering sites and behavior for each stage of Oligota kashmirica benefica (Coleoptera: Sthphylinidae). Egg was oval type, yellow, 0.3 mm size. Larva exuviated 3 times and the last (3rd) instar, length 1.6 mm, wide 0.4 mm, became dermata pupa in soil. Adult was lightish dark-brown, and coriaceous forewing covered a half of abdomen. O. kashmirica benefca mainly overwinters with adult at Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) windbreaks of orchards, but it did not diapause in greenhouse during winter.
