Formation, Breakage and Reformation of Humic Flocs by Inorganic and Organic Coagulants

  • The floc formation, breakage and reformation of humic acid by inorganic (alum and PAC) and organic coagulants (cationic polyelectrolytes) at several conditions (pH, ionic strength and floc breakage time) were examined and compared among the coagulants at different conditions using a continuous optical monitoring method, with controlled mixing and stirring conditions. For alum, the shapes of formation, breakage and reformation curves at different pH (5 and 7) were different, but the shapes and the sizes of initial floc and reformed floc were nearly the same in the absence and presence of electrolytes at pH 7. For PAC, similar shapes of the curves were obtained at different pH and ionic strength, but the sizes were different, except for those of reformed flocs at different pH. However, for these coagulants, reformed flocs after floc breakage, occurred irreversibly for all the conditions used in this study. For organic coagulants, the time to attain the initial plateau floc size, the extent of floc strength at high shear rate and reversibility of reformed floes were different, depending floc formation mechanism. Especially, for the cationic polyelectrolyte forming humic flocs by charge neutralization or electrostatic patch effect mechanism, reformed flocs occurred reversibly, regardless of pH and floc breakage time, but occurred irreversibly in the presence of electrolytes.

정수처리 응집효율 개선을 위한 Al(III)염과 Fe(III)염 응집제의 비교 (Comparison of Al(III) and Fe(III) Coagulants for Improving Coagulation Effectiveness in Water Treatment)

  • 낙동강 하류부의 상수원수를 대상으로 Al(III)염과 Fe(III)염계 응집제를 이용한 응집제의 특성 실험 결과, alum과 $FeCl_3$의 경우는 모노머성 화학종이 각각 98%와 93.3%로 응집제내에 함유된 주된 가수분해종은 모노머성 화학종임을 알 수 있었다. 염기를 첨가하여 제조한 염기 첨가비 r=1.2인 PACl의 경우 폴리머성 Al(III)종은 31.2%이었으며, r=2.2인 PACl의 경우 함유된 폴리머성 Al(III)종은 85.0%로 r 값이 증가함에 따라 더 많은 폴리머성 Al(III)종이 함유되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 응집제별 응집실험 결과, 원수의 탁도가 높고 낮음에 관계없이 응집제별 탁도 및 유기물 제거정도는 $FeCl_3$ > PACl (r=2.2) > PACl(r=1.2) > alum의 순으로 나타났다. Al(III)계 응집제 보다 $FeCl_3$의 경우 응집효율이 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 Al(III)계 응집제의 경우 염기도가 높은 응집제의 경우 polymeric Al(III)종을 많이 함유함에 따라 응집효율이 향상됨에 따라 염기도가 높은 응집제일수록 응집효율이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 실험에 적용된 응집 pH 범위(pH 4.0~9.5)에서 모든 응집제의 최적 응집 pH는 약 7.0으로 나타났다. 특히 고염기도 PACl (r=2.2)과 $FeCl_3$의 경우 pH 7.0 이상에서도 높은 탁도 응집효율을 유지하였다. 따라서 pH가 높은 상수원수의 경우 탁도 제거에서는 고염기도 PACl이나 $FeCl_3$ 응집제가 더 적합한 것으로 판단된다.

최적 응집 효율을 위한 Al계 액상 응집제의 희석 효과 (The Predilution Effect of Al-based Liquid Coagulants for the Optimal Efficacy)

  • 원수의 pH, 응집제의 주입량, 희석배수에 따라 알루미늄계 응집제(Alum, PACS, PACC)의 원수내 인과 탁질의 제거효과를 고찰하였다. 저탁도(20 NUT) 및 적정 pH 6~9하에서 알류미늄계 응집제간의 탁도 제거율의 차이는 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않았다. 그러나 인의 제거율에 있어서는 20~40 ppm의 주입량에 대해서 응집제의 염기도가 증가할수록 감소함을 알 수 있었다. Alum (0%)>PACS (45~50%)>PACC (70%), 고탁도(100 NUT) 하에서는 고분자 응집제인 PACS와 PACC의 응집성능이 단분자 응집제인 Alum보다 뛰어남을 알 수 있었다. 20 NUT의 저탁도에서 직접 주입한 경우와 비교해서, 500~2000배로 희석한 Alum의 경우에는 응집효율의 감소가 나타났으나 희석된 응집제의 체류시간이 증가함에 따라 탁도 및 인의 제거율이 증가하는 경향을 나타내주었다. 반면에 희석된 PACC의 경우에는 분산도의 증가에 기인한 응집성능의 향상이 나타났으나 희석된 응집제의 체류시간이 증가함에 따라 응집효율의 감소가 나타났다. 100 NTU의 고탁도 조건하에서는 Alum과 PACC를 희석하여 주입시 모두 응집성능이 향상됨을 알 수 있었다.

응집 처리한 Alcaligenes eutrophus 균체로부터 poly(3-hydroxybutyrate)의 회수 (Recovery of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) from the Coagulated Cells of Alcaligenes eutrophus.)

  • 생분해성 고분자인 poly(3-hydroxybutyrate, PHB)를 생산하는 Alcaligenes eutrophus의 배양액에 응집제를 첨가하여 회수한 균체로부터 용매추출법 에 의한 PHB 회수와 순도에 미치는 응집제의 영향을 조사하였다. 응집제는 Al계 3종류와 Fe계 2종류를 사용하였다. 균체로부터 PHB는 30%로 희석한 hypochlorite 용액과 chloloform 혼합용액을 이용하여 추출 회수하였다. Al계 응집제들의 경우, 응집제의 첨가량이 1,000 mg-Al/L 이하의 농도에서는 PHB 회수율이 응집제를 첨가하지 않은 경우의 회수율(82%)과 거의 비슷하였고, 1000 mg-Al/L 이상의 농도에서는 응집제 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 PHB 회수율이 감소하였다. PHB 추출에 사용한 hypochlorite 용액의 농도를 50%로 증가시키면, 응집제를 2000 mg-Al/L까지 높은 농도로 첨가하여도 90% 이상의 PHB 회수율을 얻을 수 있었다. 회수된 PHB의 순도는 응집제의 종류와 용량에 관계없이 98% 이상으로 매우 높았다. Fe계 응집제의 경우, 응집제의 용량은 PHB의 회수율에 거의 영향을 미치지 않았으나, 회수된 PHB중의 잔류 Fe의 농도가 높았고, 잔류 Fe에 의해 정제한 PHB가 엷은 적색으로 착색되었다. 세포의 회수와 PHB의 정제 공정에 적합한 응집제로는 응집효율, 잔류 Al과 Fe 및 정제 PHB의 색상 등을 고려할 때 Fe계 보다는 Al계 응집제가 적합하였다.

화학 및 천연 응집제를 이용한 수중 Cs, Sr 제거 (Removal of Cs and Sr in Water Using Chemical and Natural Coagulants)

  • 응집/침전 기술로 지표수 내 방사성 핵종(Cs, Sr)의 제거 가능성을 평가하였다. 화학응집제는 Alum (aluminum sulfate), PAC (poly aluminum chloride), PACS (poly aluminum hydroxide chloride silicate)를 사용하였고, 광물계 천연응집제는 일라이트(illite)와 제올라이트(zeolite)를 사용하였다. 화학 및 천연 응집제는 각각 주입하거나 혼합 주입한 후 jar-test를 통하여 안정화된 방사성 핵종($^{133}Cs$, $^{88}Sr$)의 제거율을 평가하였다. 응집/침전 공정에서 화학응집제(Alum, PAC, PACS) 주입만으로는 Cs과 Sr이 10% 미만으로 제거되었고, 고분자응집제(polyDADMAC)를 혼합하여 주입할 경우 Cs은 최대 23.1%, Sr은 최대 17.8%까지 제거가 가능하였다. 광물계 천연응집제(zeolite, illite)는 화학응집제(Alum, PAC, PACS)에 비하여 Cs과 Sr의 제거율이 높았는데, 화학응집제(PACS)와 고분자응집제에 zeolite를 추가로 주입(10~200 mg/L)한 경우 Cs 제거율은 최대 36.9%, Sr 제거율은 최대 17.1%로 증가하였다.

응집제주입에 의한 급속모래여과에서 초기유출수의 수질향상 (Improving the Initial Effluent Water Quality of Rapid Sand Filter by Coagulants Injection)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the efficiency of coagulants dose after backwashing. The turbidity of initial effluent was high after backwashing in the rapid sand filtration and the high turbidity was almost removed by coagulants dose into filter-sand after backwashing. It was found that the turbidity of initial effluent was well removed by all kinds of the coagulants used in this study. When filtration was performed input water with differentiated pH's, the turbidity of effluent was low at the range of pH 5 - pH 7. But the removal was not good about over pH 9. This result was considered into the existence forms of aluminium, $Al(OH)^{2+}\;and\;{Al(OH)_2}^+$ at pH 5. Cryptosporidiums of effluent were 4/ml for ten minutes immediately after back washing and 3/ml until sixty minutes. However, the case of coagulant dose after backwashing, Cryptosporidiums of effluent were 0.5/ml for ten minutes with no detection after twenty minutes.

Selection of coagulant using jar test and analytic hierarchy process: A case study of Mazandaran textile wastewater

  • Textile factories are one of the industries which its wastewater treatment is a challenging issue, especially in developing countries and a conventional treatment cannot treat all its pollutants properly. Using chemical coagulants is a technique for physical and chemical primary treatment of the wastewater. We applied jar test for selection of suitable coagulant among the five coagulants including alum, calcium hydroxide, ferrous sulfate, ferrous chloride and barium chloride for the effluent of wastewater in Mazandran textile factory located in Mazandran Province, Iran. In addition, jar test, we also used analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method considering criteria which included coagulation cost, sensitivity to pH change, the amount of sludge generation and side effects for coagulation. The results of the jar test indicated that calcium hydroxide was proper among the coagulants which it removed 92.9% total suspended solid (TSS), 70% dye and 30% chemical oxygen demand. The AHP analysis presented that calcium hydroxide is more suitable than other coagulants considering five criteria.

해양심층수를 이용한 다시마 추출물의 두부응고제 특성 (Characteristics of Tofu Coagulants Extracted from Sea Tangle Using Treated Deep Ocean Water)

  • We investigated the characteristics of various Tofu coagulants extracted from sea tangle using treated deep ocean water (DOW) as the solvents. The coagulants were typical solutions extracted from sea tangle using raw DOW and strongly electrolyzed acidic (SAC) or alkaline (SAK) water. The total dissolved solids (TDS), NaCl and electric conductivity were increased in the coagulant solution extracted by SAC than the others. In the coagulant solutions extracted by acidic electrolyzed solvent, aspartic acid content (13.5 mg/100 g) was higher than others (11.2 and 12.1 mg/100 g). The Tofu obtained using coagulants extracted with treated DOW had the water contents ranging from 79.55% to 80.04%. The contents of crude protein (12.1 g/100 g) and Na, Ca, K and Mg were relatively higher than general Tofu commercially available. Therefore, coagulant solutions extracted from sea tangle using treated DOW can be used to develop natural high-grade tofu for practical use.

응집제와 관형막을 활용한 CMP 폐수 처리 가능성 연구 (The Feasibility Study of CMP Wastewater Treatment Using Tubular Membrane and Coagulants)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the possibility of the CMP wastewater treatment from semiconductor fabrication under operating tubular membrane with coagulants. To find suitable coagulants treating CMP wastewater, we conducted Jar-test. After Jar-test experiments suitable coagulants are PAC(17%), $Ca(OH)_2$ and optimum coagulant dosage is PAC(17%) 10mg/L, $Ca(OH)_2$ 110 ~ 120mg/L. Based on these results, the tubular membrane was applied to CMP wastewater, the turbidity removal efficiency is $Ca(OH)_2$ > PAC(17%) > Nothing. The fast cross-flow velocity and backwash process what are operating characteristics of tubular membrane can be stable CMP wastewater treatment. But when the coagulant and tubular membrane are used at the same time, the withdraw and treatment of the CMP wastewater are possibile. However further treatment process needs if treated water will be used for semiconductor fabrications.

  • Organics matters including algae are the major contaminants of Nak-dong river and it's concentration Is more Increasing now. The use of coagulants has been Incresed for the effective treatment of drinking water, and aluminum coagulants have been the most widely used in raw water treatment. However, when inorganic metal coagulant is excessively used for long period, it would result in secondary problems, such as increasing sludge production, enhancing the cost of water treatment process, and increasing concentration of residual metal, especially aluminum. Therefore, recently. in order to reduce the use of metal coagulant and enhance the coagulation effectiveness, several alternative coagulants, such as polymeric Inorganic coagulants and organic polymers, have been used In water treatment plants. The objectives of thins research were (11 to determine optimum dosage concentration and compare the coajuiation efnciency at various pH ranees with alum alone, alum+cationic polymer, and alum+anlonlc polymer, (21 to evaluate the amount of alum reduced by using organic polymer, (31 to maximize removal officiency of organic matter and minimize the concentration of residual aluminum.
