The purpose of this study was to compare ideal clothing and actual clothing behavior between Korean and Japanese college students. 185 Korean students and 91 Japanese students were used into data analysis from October to December. 2000. The age range was 18 to 28 years. The results were as followed. 1) Japanese students wanted to wear fitted clothing styles with revealing the body, while Koreans wanted to wear not only fitted styles but also relaxed and coved body styles. 2) Korean students wore more loose styles and fitted upper styles and pants than Japanese students. On the other hand, Japanese students wore fitted clothing styles and skirt. 3) Japanese students showed higher correlation between ideal clothing styles and actual clothing styles than Koreans. This means that although Koreans want to wear ideal styles, they don't wear those styles much. 4) Overweight students tended to avoid wearing fitted and revealed body styles, pursuing more loose and coved body styles. This tendency showed stronger to Koreans than Japanese students.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of clothing colors, clothing styles on women's body image perception. The experimental design was 2${\times}$2${\times}$9(perceiver's gender ${\times}$clothing styles${\times}$clothing colors) factorial design with between-subjects design. Subjects were 320 college students in the metropolitan area of Seoul. Perceiver's gender, clothing styles, and clothing colors gave a significant influence on the 3 variables of shoulder, the upper half of the body, and bust. Shoulder and the upper half of the body had an interaction effect by clothing styles and clothing color. Perceiver's gender gave a significant influence on hip size, length of leg, height, clothing styles did a significant influence on hip size, length of leg, height, and slender figure. Clothing colors gave a significant influence on length of leg, height, and slender figure. Length of leg and slender figure had an interaction effect by perceiver's gender and clothing styles. Hip size had an interaction effect by perceiver's gender and clothing color. Hip size had an interaction effect by clothing styles and clothing color. The results of this study support that coloration of clothing and clothing style affects perception of stimulus persons wearing apparel.
This study is an attempt to establish an aesthetic and fashion sense of the heroine's image and fashion according to the social environment which is related to fashion transformation. Also, this study modem society's need for specific social occupational roles through fashion and clothing in cinema. first, individual people are estimating their social position and ability by his/her fashion style. Modem fashion styles are changing into various, complicated, gorgeous and attractive styles; however, the needs of professional women's clothing styles are fairly conservative. Second, classical, closed, and unobtrusive fashion styles are appearing in modem cinema's clothing depending on professional women's expertise in fashion styles. Third, changes of styles are varied by their colors and clothing design. Colors had not changed very much during the last 30 years; however, in the 1980's, white and grey colors, in the 1990's black and achromatic colors, and in the beginning of this century dark green and brown and also diverse colors have been used. But the brightness is so light and expressed by a quiet and cold style. Furthermore, the inner images are judged by their forms which is determined by how people choose their clothing styles. Consequently, women's clothing styles easily appear as a result of their preconceived ideas formed by their professional knowledge and ability.
This study took the conceptual framework of acculturation styles into the empirical investigation of international students in Korea. This research identifies the differences in acculturation styles, the characteristics of each segment, the effect of acculturation styles on clothing involvement (clothing involvement and risk probability), and the effect of cultural orientation values (individualism and collectivism) as covariates. The participants were international students attending a university located in Seoul. Data from 153 international students were used for statistical analysis. Respondents were grouped into four acculturation styles (integration, assimilation, separation, and marginalization). The assimilation group had the highest mean score of clothing interest. Cultural orientation values showed a significant covariate effect. With individualism as covariates, the main effect of acculturation styles on clothing interest was significant. In clothing product evaluation criteria, the integration group regarded design, fit and trend as most important. The marginalization group showed a mean score that was significantly lower in brand preference and satisfaction; however, the assimilation group had a mean score that was significantly higher.
The purpose of this study was to investigate 1) the effects of clothing styles on impression formation of middle and high school students and 2) the differences in impression in relation to perceiver variablex(sex, age, residence). The sample consisted of 60 subjects in each of 8 perceiver groups according to sex, age and residence. Stimuli consisted of 10 color photographs of male and female adolescent wearing each of 5 clothing styles respectively. Questionnaires consisted of 43 seven-point semantic differential scales measuring perceivers responses to the stimuli, open-ended Question and perceiver’s clothing style preference. Responses to the semantic differential scale were factor analyzed and 4 factors - Self-confidence/refinement, Sincerity, Intelligence, and Sociability - were emerged to account for the structure of the impression of the male stimuli. Five factors - Sincerity, Refinement, Self-confidence, Sociability, Intellience - were emerged in case of female stimuli. One-way ANOVA results showed that clothing styles had the effects on all the factors of impression except Sincerity. From the reset analyzing the effects of perceiver variables on impressions, age had the effects in all the clothing styles, sex had the effects in 6 clothing styles, and residence in 5 clothing styles. Clothing style 5(male stimuli) and style 10(female stimuli) were the most preferred clothing style in all the subject groups.
The purposes of this study were : 1) to investigate the differences of female students' clothing behaviors and their life styles according to their demographic data, 2) to examine the differences of their clothing behaviors according to their life styles. The data were collected from 440 female college students in Chungju city through self-administered questionnaires, and were analyzed by frequencies, Cronbach's alpha, t-test, factor analysis, cluster analysis, one way ANOVA and Sheffe test. The results of the study were as follows : Four variables of clothing behavior were significantly different according to father's occupation, father's monthly income, student's major, student's monthly expenditure on clothing and her companion when purchasing her clothing. Life styles were classified five types. The dimensions of life styles were significantly different according to student's major and monthly expenditure on clothing. There were highly significant differences between life style dimensions and clothing behavior variables.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of women's life-style on image evaluation of clothing styles, and on their selection of clothing styles by situations. The subject of investigation was 441 women above 20 living in Daegu. 6 types of clothing styles including classic, casual, elegant, dramatic, romantic, and mannish and 7 social situations including shopping near house, shopping in a busy street, cultural center, wedding ceremony, eating out, alumni meeting or fraternity meeting, and couples meeting were used for this study. Data analysis was performed using SPSS package, which included factor analysis, reliability test, cluster analysis, frequency, percentage, ANOVA, and $\chi$$^2$-test. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Adult women could be classified into 5 groups including activist, in-activist, the leisured well-off, the wholesomely economical, and the appearance showing-off by their life-styles. 2. The clothing image according to the 6 clothing styles was different. In the image evaluation of each clothing style by life-style groups, in-active group thought classic style most functional and leisured well-off group, mannish style. Elegant style and dramatic style were estimated positively by the leisured well-off and the appearance showing-off. 3. Selection of clothing style differed according to situations. More formal the situation was, more formal style tended to be selected and for less formal situation, active and mannish style was selected.
This research studied the first impression of a stranger in various styles of Korean or Western attire in several socially interacting contexts. The semantic differential scale was used to analyze the responses of IHO male and 180 female university students to line drawings of male and female figures in Korean or Western formal and informal attire in campus, office, and ambiguous contexts. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's test. Six factors emerged to account for dimensions of first impressions. These were evaluation, potency, prestige and formality, conformity, likableness, and conspicuousness. Clothing styles had a larger effect on responses than context. Persons in traditional Korean styles were perceived as more prestigious, formal, individualistic, and less competent than those in Western styles. Conversely persons in both formal and informal Western styles were perceived as more attractive and more competent than those in traditional Korean styles. Persons in casual Western styles were considered least prestigious and least formal. A weak interaction effect was found between clothing style and social context.
This study investigated the relationship of consumer type to perferred and purchased Styles by clothing, life style, demographic, and information variables. Four consumer types were identified in study 1 (Kim, 1988). There were the casual, mannish, elegant, and feminine types. The present study used 20 line drawings representing the styles of summer '87 Data were obtained from questionnaires completed by 624 consumers $15\~69$ years of age living in Seoul, and analyzed by multiple discriminant analysis, and CROSSTABS. Descriptive profiles of the four categories were developed differently by clothing, life style and demographic characteristics. Casual and elegant types were preferred by middle-aged and married women, while mannish and feminine types were preferred by unmarried and younger women. The preferred design types of these groups were related more to preferences for clothing styles than purchased styles. All variables except occupation contributed to discriminate purchased styles.
The propose of the study was to evaluate impression effects and likeness of clothing styles and make-up types. The stimuli were composed of 4 clothing styles(base, natural, romantic, classic) and 4 make-up types(no make-up, natural, romantic, classic). The subjects were 512 male and female university students in Daejeon and Chungnam province. The study consisted of a survey and quasi- experiment. The experimental materials used for this study were 16 stimuli, 32 hi-polar adjectives, and likeness scale were composed of 7-point Likert type scales. As a result, the clothing styles and make-up types effected on the 4 impressional dimensions: grace, evaluation, salience, and dynamism. The clothing styles effected on grace, salience and dynamism dimension and the effect of dynamism dimension was the most powerful among the dimensions. The make-up types effected on all of the 4 impression dimensions and the effect of salience dimension was the most powerful among the dimensions. The interaction effects existed between the clothing styles and make-up types in salience dimension. The likeness showed significant difference only on the make-up types. The effect of grace dimension was the most powerful among the dimensions. The main reason that make-up effect appears greatly could be analyzed into that clothes color is controlled by white. The results suggest the necessity of succession study about the effect of clothes color.
