  • The aim of this study was to provide basic materials that would enable students who take courses in the subjects of technology and home economics to take the knowledge and technological skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to real life situations and to nurture their thinking power and creativity. To achieve these research objectives, a survey was conducted on 217 home economics teachers at 129 schools in the metropolitan area in order to assess their classroom operations and the adequacy of the curriculum regarding "clothes-making and reuse." The results showed that most of the schools surveyed have only one classroom for home economics and that a majority of them are cooking rooms. The most preferred place to practice making clothes was found to be the classroom. In addition, the use of teaching aids pertaining to clothes-making are lacking or in poor shape. Furthermore, analysis of the curriculum regarding "clothes-making and reuse" showed that most of the students use kits that contain materials for making clothes, due to a lack of practice hours. Most teachers thought that this section was appropriate for the school curriculum. In the more detailed categories, the students' ability to use sewing machines was the lowest, while the ability to sew by hand was selected as the most useful and most appropriate for real life situations.

  • Research on lexicon and language provides insights into the interests, values and practices of a community where individuals use the language. The International Classroom Lexicon Project, in which ten countries participated, identified own country's mathematics teaching and learning lexicons by investigating mathematics classroom instruction from teachers' perspectives in a speaking-oriented community. This study, as an extension of the International Classroom Lexicon Project research, investigated pedagogical lexicons used in 「Mathematics and Education」 journals specialized for Korean professional mathematics teachers published by the Korean Society of Teachers of Mathematics. Using the text mining approach, we also traced how these pedegogical lexicons have changed quantitatively over the past 10 years with a diachronic perspective. As a results, several novel terms were found in the writing-oriented community, which were not identified in the speaking-oriented community. In addition, we could discover some pedagogical lexicons have increased statistically significantly and some lexicons appeared(increased) rapidly across years. This implies the teacher community's values and zeitgeist by reflecting these changes in the sociocultural, incidental and social changing (i.e., periodical change) contexts. This study has value as a first step in understanding zeitgeist for mathematics education in Korean mathematics teacher community according to changes of times over the past 10 years. Also, this study contributes to the methodological insights: the text mining technique provides a methodological contribution to researching changes in interests, values and zeitgeist according to these changes in the times.

  • The development of teacher's professionalism through teacher education is a key element in the improvement of school education. However, there has been criticism that the mathematics teacher education in Korea do not provide given enough opportunities for the classroom experience during preservice teacher education period. For development of inservice mathematics teachers and preservice teachers' teaching professionalism, this study develops a research community for mathematics classroom consisting of experts, inservice mathematics teachers, and preservice teachers. And the study explores the possibilities of the model as an educational space for inservice teachers and preservice teachers by participating in a series of courses such as task development and revision, and observation and analysis of classes. As results, inservice teachers and preservice teachers were able to enhance the practical experience and understanding necessary for the class, and they were also positively influenced in teacher efficacy and view of teaching on the model. Based on this, we suggest the possibility of the model as a teacher education system.

  • As smart phones with built-in sensors are developed, research on recognition using wearable devices is increasing. Existing papers are mostly limited on research to personal activity recognition. In this paper, we propose a method to recognize conceptual group activity. Before doing recognition, we generate new data based on the analysis of the conceptual group activity in a classroom. The study focuses on three activities in the classroom environment: Taking Lesson, Doing Presentation and Discussing. With the proposed algorithm, the recognition rate is over 96%. Using this method in real time will make it easy to automatically analyze the activity and the purpose of the classrooms. Moreover, it can increase the utilization of the classroom through the data analysis. Further research will focus on group activity recognition in other environments and the design of an group activity recognition system.

  • The nature of the classroom environment is an important variable to understand when fostering creativity for elementary children. Studies of the classroom climate, structure or interaction commonly depend on behavioral observations or reports from the teacher or other adult-observer. Recent studies have used self-report instruments completed by students regarding their perceptions of various aspects of their class (see Fraser, 1991). The purpose of this study was to determine the developmental differences in the ratings of classroom environment between Korean students who are gifted and their American peers. The My Class Inventory was administered to 141 elementary students in grades three, four, and five. There were 65 Korean students and 76 American students who were identified as gifted by their schools. Reliability coefficients were calculated for all scales (satisfaction = .68: friction, .67; competition = .57; cohesion = .73; difficulty = .22). Results of a multivariate analysis illustrated significant differences between students from Korea and students from America on the MCI. Univariate analysis of variance of cultural group by grade level were conducted for four of the five scales. Significant differences were found by country for the cohesion scale and by country at grade levels for the satisfaction scale. American children expressed greater satisfaction than their Korean counterparts at all grade level, but particularly at grade five. Implications for further research are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare student's satisfaction with school food service environment to improve the quality of middle school meal service. A survey was conducted of 680 students (boys 246, girls 433) from 6 middle schools providing school meals from October to November 2007. The questionnaires were directly distributed to the subjects for comparison of satisfaction of school meals depending on the eating place. As for the quantity of food, classroom group (3.40) expressed significantly higher satisfaction than cafeteria group (3.16, P < 0.01), but as for the satisfaction on hygiene, classroom group (2.76) showed significantly lower satisfaction than cafeteria group (3.03, P < 0.01). About the satisfaction of school meal environment, classroom group showed more satisfaction on distribution time, eating place, eating atmosphere (P < 0.001). The classroom group showed higher satisfaction than cafeteria group in cases of quantity, diversity of types of soup, dessert, and the cost of school meal. To improve eating place and hygiene of school meal, sufficient cafeteria space and pleasant environment is needed to be established.
