The purpose of the study was to estimate the trajectories of elementary school adjustment in grades 1 through 4. For the purpose, the Korean Children's Panel data were analyzed using potential growth model and the growth mixture model. As the result, the linear model was selected as the optimal model. The four potential groups were derived as trajectories: high-level maintenance, low-level maintenance, low-level increase, and high-level decrease. In terms of group distribution, the most children were in high-level maintenance group and then low-level maintenance, low-level increase, and high-level decrease in order. Based on the findings that trajectories of elementary school adjustment changes as children growth, we suggest that schools and families need to carefully investigate and support their school adjustment in individual levels.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the change trajectory and latent class types of self-esteem in first to fourth grade elementary school students. For the purpose, the Korean Children's Panel data were analyzed using potential growth model and the growth mixture model. As the results, the linear change model was selected as the most appropriate model. The change trajectory was found to increase slightly as the grade increased. In addition, four latent class groups were derived through: 'high level-maintenance,' 'low level-increase,' 'high level-decrease,' and 'low level-maintenance.' Most children were in the 'high level-maintenance' group, followed by 'high level-decrease,' 'low level-increase,' and 'low level-maintenance' groups. Therefore, based on the results of the study, we suggest that educational institutions and local communities pay attention to trends in elementary school students' self-esteem and provide appropriate support for students in each class.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In the United States, one in every 5 children is obese with greater likelihood in low-income households. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may have accelerated disparities in child obesity risk factors, such as poor dietary intake and increased sedentary behaviors, among low-income families because of financial difficulties, social isolation and other struggles. This study reveals insights into nutrition and health challenges among low-income families of young children in West Texas to better understand needs and develop interventions. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In-depth individual interviews were performed via Zoom among 11 families of children under the age of 3. A semi-structured interview guide was developed to explore 3 areas: changes in (1) dietary intake and (2) sedentary behaviors and (3) families' preferences regarding a parent nutrition education program. Each interview was audiorecorded, transcribed, and coded using MaxQDA software. RESULTS: Eating together as a family become challenging because of irregular work schedules during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most parents stated that their children's dietary habits shifted with an increased consumption of processed foods. Many parents are unable to afford healthful foods and have utilized food and nutrition assistance programs to help feed their families. All families reported that their children's screen time substantially increased compared to the pre-pandemic times. Moreover, the majority of parents did not associate child screen time with an obesity risk, so this area could be of particular interest for future interventions. Meal preparation ideas, remote modality, and early timing were identified as key intervention strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Online nutrition interventions that emphasize the guidelines for child screen time and regular meal routines will be effective and promising tools to reach low-income parents for early childhood health promotion and obesity prevention.
Purpose: This qualitative study utilizing phenomenological methodology aimed to depict parental measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine acceptance through the work experiences of health personnel. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two public health workers working as vaccination providers in the three southern border provinces of Thailand were recruited. In-depth, face-to-face, semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: Four main themes emerged: (1) religious beliefs, (2) personal disagreements, (3) fear and mistrust regarding potential vaccine side effects, and (4) misperceptions about the potential severity of measles. Four subthemes were identified: (1) haram (prohibited), (2) the will of Allah, (3) spousal disagreement, and (4) disagreement from a religious leader. The results of this study indicated that perceived religious prohibition was the most important reason for refusing to vaccinate among Muslim parents. Vaccine-hesitant parents were concerned that the vaccine might contain gelatin derived from pig products. Also, halal certification of the vaccine was required from Muslim parents to ensure that vaccine has been approved for Muslims. Meanwhile, a lack of knowledge and positive attitudes concerning immunizations of vaccine-hesitant parents were also found as predominant reasons for incomplete childhood immunizations in the deep south of Thailand. Conclusion: Health education and engagement by religious leaders to endorse the vaccination and bridge the gap between religious beliefs and vaccine acceptance is needed to overcome this issue. This study findings could be effectively applied to improve vaccination uptake in a Muslim majority context.
Objective: Social attention is paid to the issues concerning child care teachers' work multisibility and ambiguous legal status. Child care teachers are employees based on the "Labor Standards Act" and the "Child Care Act". They also play the role of kindergarten teachers based on the "Childhood Education Act" because of the Nuri curriculum. Based on the main tasks of the child care teachers who protect and nurture infants and toddlers, the Nuri curriculum education for infants is conducted. However, the duties and rights of child care teachers are disproportionate because there are many areas where teachers' professional roles do not suit their legal rights. Methods: The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers perceive their own rights through field experience using qualitative method based on interpretative epistemology. Participants were 61 child care teachers working in the metropolitan area and used protocol description and focus group interview (FGI) for data collection. The collected data were derived as a central theme according to the data analysis method proposed by Creswell (2013). Results: Participants in the study described the 'Right and autonomy of education as a professional occupation', 'Right to request for improvement on working conditions, guarantee of living and to request for welfare system' and 'Right to guarantee of a teacher's status and adjustment of grievance.' They pointed out poor working conditions and welfare benefits at daycare centers, and emphasized that education and autonomy are necessary conditions to be strengthened for quality child care activities. On the other hand, they did not realize that 'Right to guarantee of a teacher's status and adjustment of grievance' was their right. And they have endured the infringement of this right. Conclusion/Implications: This study reveals the gap between teachers' responsibilities and rights, indicating the urgency of institutional arrangements. It is discussed that the social expectation for strengthening personality and professionalism as an infant and child specialist is increased and a practical alternative for the improvement of the right of teachers working in the child care field is needed considering the change of values about work.
Objectives : The oral care during early childhood plays an important role to maintain sound oral health during adulthood. As the number of children's using child care facilities is on the rise recently, the children's oral health awareness and behavior of the educators at nurseries and kindergartens are to be examined. Methods : A self-recording survey was conducted on 194 educators at the nurseries and kindergartens in Chungnam region. Results : The most frequently given snack was milk, 91.8 percent of the facilities had children brush their teeth, 63.4 percent made them apply fluoride and 56.2 percent kept children's toothbrushes in an ultraviolet rays sterilizer. There was a meaningful difference in the awareness of the necessity to educate children about oral health according to the offer of the opportunity to apply fluoride (p<0.05). A meaningful difference was found in the recognition of the necessity to educate children according to their grade (p<0.05) and to train teachers themselves (p<0.05). The most desirable persons in charge of oral health education were dentists in health centers (46.9%) in order. The more experience in teaching they have had (p<0.05), when they're married (50.5%) (p<0.05) and when they're not homeroom teachers (52.6 percent), the more regular checkups they have had (p<0.05). As for the importance of oral health and the results of regular checkups, those who had answered 'very important'(42.4%) showed higher rate of regular checkup (p<0.05) than those who had answered 'important'(23.9%). When teachers have the experience to get trained about oral care (96.3%), the practice frequency of brushing teeth was proved to become higher (p<0.05). Conclusions : The educators for children should recognize the importance of oral health education, educate children to practice oral health care, and the environment and systematic foundation should be established which the educators manage effectively.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the tendencies and general distributive features of creativity elements on activities in the Nuri curriculum teachers' guidebooks for the ages of 3-5. This was done by analysis of 1,883 activities related to creativity in the teachers' guidebooks. In order to analyze the data, the frequency and percentage of creativity elements were calculated. The results can be summarized as follows: First, the ratio of activities related to creativity was 95.1% for the age of three, 93.1% for the age of four, and 78.6% for the age of five. Second, the most common creativity element was cognitive element and the next was motivational element, and the least was dispositional element. Third, regarding themes, the frequency of creativity elements was highest in 'tools for living', and lowest in 'countries of the world'. Fourth, the creativity elements were more frequently found in group activities rather than free choice activities. Last, the frequency of creativity elements was highest in nature exploration, and was followed by social relations. The results of this study could be used as basic data for practicing activities related to creativity in the field of early childhood education.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of young children's verbal expression on their prosocial behaviors. The subjects were 44 four-year-olds and 42 five-year- olds in nine kindergartens and daycare centers located in Gyeonggi-do. The instruments used were Verbal Expressiveness Inventory(Jang, 1981) and PBSYC for teachers(Kim, 2003). The major findings of the study were as follows: Concerning the correlations between their verbal expression and prosocial behavior, those who had better verbal expression showed more prosocial behavior. The relationships between the subfactors of verbal expression and those of prosocial behavior were inconsistent to some extent, but there was a positive correlation between the two overall. So it could be said that a better verbal expresson leads to better prosocial behavior. From the findings of the study on the effect of the verbal expression on prosocial behavior, it can be concluded that young children who have better verbal expression are more excellent at building a good peer relationship, helping their peers, being considerate, making themselves accessible, sharing their own belongings with peers and regulating their own emotions. This study is expected to assist early childhood education institutions to provide young children with a variety of educational activities geared toward improving verbal expression to improve their prosocial behaviors. Also, this study is expected to help teachers to improve the prosocial behavior of young children in diverse ways.
