And also, to find out the differences of attitude and needs between the service provider (SP breastfeeding specialist), present consumer (PC, pregnant or lactating women) and future consumer (FC, college women). There were types of questionnaires, which consisted of needs and attitudes toward child and maternal nutrition, as well as the personal characteristics of the study subjects. The subjects consisted of 113 breastfeeding specialists who served at medical related institutions, 197 pregnant or lactating women and 309 college women. The self-administered questionnaires from subjects were collected from October to November 2005 in Seoul and Kyunggi Province. The data was analysed by SPSS Win 12.0, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results of this study were as following: 1) The most Important determining factors on breastfeeding was 'medical specialist's support' (3.51) and the next one was 'knowledge of maternity care practice' (3.39). And the importance score of determinating factors on breastfeeding was significantly different between each group (p < 0.001). The groups of consumer (3.50 at PC and 3.59 at FC) considered the service provider (3.32) more important. The service providers considered a more effective determining factor to be 'husband and family support' and 'peer support' than the others (p <0.001). 2) To compare the effective factors of breastfeeding practices between the three groups, the service providers were more significantly considered than the otters such as 'attendance of intervention program' (p < 0.001). But the PC group considered the most effective factors wis 'mother's job after delivery'. 3) The self-evaluated score of the breastfeeding knowledge was the most high in SP; the score was significantly different between groups. The knowledge score of nutritional aspects in human milk was most highly evaluated. But maternity care practice and public acceptance marked the lower evaluation score than other issues. 4) The desirable types of educational material was mass media, and the next was printed matter such as booklets. Two kinds if consumers preferred DVD or VCR tapes than and the service provider group (p < 0.001). 5) The priority contents of nutrition service PC group wanted the information about infant care more than maternal care (p < 0.05), but FC group's priority was significantly different compared with PC group (p < 0.001). The priority of SP group pointed out the information of practical child care methods. The results showed the needs of nutrition service, education channels, and perception toward effective factors on consumer behavior changes were significantly different between each group. Thus the result of this study may suggest that consumer oriented nutrition service programs must be developed.

  • The model of family decision-making in child protection has been widely discussed and adopted in many countries. The purpose of this study was to introduce the model and, then, investigate whether this process is applicable in child care and protection services in Korea. The main goal in the study has been to explore the philosophical and practical foundations of the family involvement approach in decision-making and describe the international applications of the model. Family group conferencing, originally developed and enacted in New Zealand, has been critically examined. The potential contributions of the study may include seeking a more effective intervention for child protection through determining whether the model is appropriate or desirable in issues of philosophy, practice and policy within the Korean culture.

  • Despite evidence that early childhood teachers play a critical role in guiding children through their child assessment, most beginning teachers in the survival stage face the greatest difficulties in this area. Using the intentional and purposeful tools of action research, this collaborative action study supports a beginning teacher in reflecting upon her perceptions of the 'child assessment' of young children and devising and evaluating good guidance practices. During the course of the study, the participating teacher became engaged in more reflective teaching which prompted her to perceive the "child assessment" of the children from different perspectives. As her understanding of the importance of making her curriculum and classroom climate more engaging and meaningful deepened and she reconceptualized her notion of child assessment, the teacher witnessed positive changes in her students' behaviors which, in turn, increased her sense of efficacy. These very positive, empowering results are strong recommendation for using collaborative action research especially in the novice years of teaching for it provides the teacher with a life-long transformative tool for professional development.

  • This study aims to investigate the changes of their recognition and childcare practices before and after the training for disability awareness targeting class teachers in inclusive childcare setting. Subjects of this study were 9 teachers and the data was collected from 3 focus group (3 persons per group) and personal interviews in case of study needs. The results of this study are as follows: childcare teachers appealed ignorance and fear of children with disabilities before learning to improve their disability awareness, and have learned from the non-prejudiced attitudes of non-disabled children. The need for understanding and knowledge of children with disabilities was high, and they voluntarily and actively participated in the education for the improvement of disability awareness. Since participating in education, teachers have shown changes in perceptions of children with disabilities and changes in the way they practice childcare for disabled children. As regards cognition, teachers have become more interested in and understanding of children with disabilities and have tried to treat them equally with non-disabled children. Regarding the practice of childcare, they practiced the integrated program together with the non-disabled child and the disabled child through cooperative partnership. They also provided the disability awareness education to the non-disabled children and provided the partial integrated childcare program flexibly in one class according to the situation. The results of this study were analyzed and discussed about the general childcare teachers' experience related to the education for improving disability recognition and caring at childcare setting.

  • Since 1990, descriptive studies about the concept of client advocacy have been published in the health journals. However, empirical studies of the concept are still lacking. There are not enough bases to apply the concept of client advocacy in nursing practice. The purpose of this paper is to encourage empirical research about client advocacy by clarification of the concept and to discusses application of the theory in child healthcare. The literature was reviewed that empirical studies on client advocacy conducted after the year 2000. The changing trends in the client advocacy concept was examined; it was changed from the philosophical concept to nursing action and changed from individual advocacy to collective advocacy, with the rise of the self advocacy concept. The research trends on client advocacy evolves from descriptive study to quasi-experimental study and instrument development study, with diversification and expansion of research methods, advocates, clients and settings. The advocacy role of the nurse in child healthcare is significant due to the child's lack of self determination ability. In ill child care, the application of individual advocacy is potent, while in healthy child care, collective advocacy, policy advocacy, and social advocacy is effective.
