  • This study examined the effect of various arrangement methods for forming peripheral closed hoops in the jacket section on the axial behavior of section enlargement strengthening columns. Four types of peripheral closed hoops arranged in the jacket section were prepared as follows: 1) Closed connection of prefabricated bar units (column P); 2) V-clip installation across the overlapped legs of channel-type bars (column V); 3) Use of glass fiber mesh for an alternative of steel bars (column F); and 4) combination of prefabricated bar units and glass fiber mesh (column PF). The V-clip is designed to form the closed hoops in the jacket section using the overlapped channel-type bars, preventing the opening of the channel bar legs. The glass fiber mesh is to examine the feasibility to apply for closed hoops in the jacket section as an alternative for steel bars, considering the easy construction. In the jacket section of all the strengthened columns, V-ties were arranged for supplementary ties, avoiding the interruption of the existing column. The axial stiffness and strength of the strengthened columns were insignificantly affected by the arrangement methods of closed hoops in the jacket section. The axial ductility ratio of the strengthened columns P, V, and PF was enhanced more than twice of that measured in the non-seismic existing column. However, the column F exhibited a lower ductility than the other strengthened columns because of the fracture of the mesh at the ultimate strength of the column. The V-clip approach was favorable to enhance the ductility of the strengthened column, preventing the opening of the legs of channel-type bars.

  • The cross-section data are generally used for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. However, when the detailed data of river channel are required, it is not available to use because of too wide distance of the offset between cross-sections. Also, the actual form of river channel cannot be reflected with the general interpolation methods which is considering straight line between acquired points. The aim of this paper is to present an algorithm which is to interpolate point using bilinear method and to estimate random cross-section between two surveyed cross-section data. And it is supposed that the proposed algorithm can be able to offer available data for hydraulic and hydrologic modeling.

  • The computation of normal depth is one of the most important parts in the design of open channel flow, and the best section is in general the most economic section in the case of constructing artificial open channels. Thus the determination of the normal depth of the best section is the essential item in the design of most open channel flows. To estimate the frictional forces a power law is introduced, which is applicable to most situations in open channel flows. Explicit and consistent forms of equations are deduced for the calculation of normal depth of triangular, rectangular and trapezoidal best sections. Furthermore the equations of normal depth are found to have the same form as those of pipe diameter for the design of pipe flow.

  • The specially prefabricated steel moment connections with pyramid head is one of the significant innovations in the steel structures forms to improve the installation time and simplify the construction procedure. The beams in this structure form are supported by two top and bottom angles and web double angles. Such a configuration despite its advantages increases the welding operation and filed installation time and costs. In this paper, the effect of using beams with channel and I section in three classes of seismically compact, seismically non-compact, and slender section according to width-to-thickness ratio on the behavior of the connection was investigated under monotonic and cyclic loading. Modeling was performed by ABAQUS and verified by the results of an experimental specimen. The findings indicated that using I and channel section instead of angle section reduces the amount of welding materials as well as easing the installation procedure. However, it has no significant effect on the ultimate strength and ductility of the connection. Furthermore, if the beam section is seismically compact, this form is considered as a special moment frame that has a rotation capacity up to 0.04 radians without any reduction in connection moment resistance.

  • Channel-forming discharge for downstream section of Yeongju dam in Naesung stream was calculated to analyze stable channel geometry. Determined channel-forming discharge was applied to design stable channel slope, depth, and base width at Yonghyeol station. Used data for channel-forming discharge and stable channel analysis were collected in downstream section of Yeongju dam in Naesung stream before the dam construction. Specified recurrence interval discharge, effective discharge, and bankfull discharge were analyzed and compared to decide final channel-forming discharge which was $260m^3/s$ of bankfull discharge. Stable channel analysis and design program was applied to predict stable channel section of width, depth, and slope with various sediment transport equations of Ackers and White, Brownlie, Engelund and Hansen, and Yang's equations. As a result, all equations of sediment transport produced milder slopes compared to current bed slope of 0.00177 and Ackers and White equation presented the most similar flow depth of current section with the design constraint of current channel width.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine morphometric characteristics in a channel bend reach. The new shape factor is suggested that channel deformation rate of cross section (${\Delta}A_s$) showed the variation of concentrated location of force due to the current and the variation of erosional section in alluvial channel. In the downstream direction the meaning of decreasing "${\Delta}A_s$" is the stability of channel bed. This study was analyzed morphological characteristics of cross section-width of channel ($W_s$), width to the thalweg ($W_{th}$), maximum depth ($D_{th}$)-on the Guem River, and typical cross sections in channel bend were proposed. The channel migration rate (M) for the study river was represented that the zones of curvature ratio (R/W) with 2~4 were larger 12% than other zones.

  • The characteristics of longitudinal dispersion enhancement by the flow oscillation are numerically studied according to various groove geometries in a 2-D channel in the present study. The length of expanded section l$_{1}$/h$_{1}$ is varied from 0 to 8.75. The oscillating flow condition is given at both side ends, i.e., u = Asin ($2{\pi}ft$) The non-dimensional temperatures at both side ends are set to zero. The bottom and top walls are adiabatic. The local heat sources are located at the middle of the groove wall. In order to solve the governing equations, the SIMPIER algorithm is employed. The present results indicate that maximum longitudinal thermal dispersion can be achieved when the area ratio of the expanded section to the contracted section in the grooved channel becomes 1.

  • Each river in each country has peculiar channel characteristics at every section. Korea consists of mountains at the rate of 70%. Due to this, the sections that display unique channel form are scattered. One of the typical features is the narrow pass of channel section that presents in the process of the generation of alluvial channel and deformation channel. Around as this narrow pass of channel, it often comes to be regular flood disaster section. Regardless of this situation, investigations and plans that reflect channel characteristics at the narrow pass of channel have been wholly wanting until now. In accordance with this, we have investigated and analysed hydraulic significance and channel form of the narrow pass of channel in Seonsan in this study. The study has found real minute classification of sediment phenomenon at river bed of low flow channel on investigation section which is sand-bed river, but it was vaguely difficult to conclude that classification of sediment arises from explicit natural force. We were able to assume that the phenomenon comes from gentle bed slope, supply of river bed materials which is nearly uniformity. However, classification of sediment would come from collecting an aggregate rather than natural force. And we found that compound cross section conversion has been developing dramatically with channel form of movable bed section referring to movement which was active before at drainage district of the narrow pass of channel. With this, we could find the phenomenon that river width of low flow channel diminished largely. This kind of situation implies that it may cause compound section weighting, flood dimension decreasing, revetment at low flow channel or the local scour at bottom of levee when extraordinary flood occurs.

  • Stable channel design is to determine the width, depth and slope for satisfying the condition that the upstream incoming sediment rate is equal to the sediment transport rate at the design channel. Therefore, the most sensitive variable when designing a stable channel is the selection of a sediment transport equation applied for the channel design. Especially if in the case of gravel beds the designer uses the equation developed by using the data of sand rivers, the calculation result of the stable channel section has large errors. In this study, the stable channel design has been applied to the gravel bed river using the previous stable channel design program with newly added the sediment transport equation for gravel beds; and the stable channel section considering design constraints has been produced by using the analytical method. As results, in the case of the application with the fixed width, the depth predicted by Ackers and White's equation was the shallowest and Meyer-Peter and $M\ddot{u}ller's$ equation was 0.8 m deeper than the current section of 2.4 m. In the case of the application with the fixed depth, the width predicted by Engelund and Hansen's equation was twice wider than the current section and by Meyer-Peter and $M\ddot{u}ller's$ equation was 20 m wider than the current section of 44 m.
