  • A fuzzy logic for collision avoiding navigation of marine vehicles is proposed in this paper. VFF(Virtual Force Field) method, which is used widely in the field of mobile robots, is modifiel to apply to marine vehicles. The method is named MVFF (Modified Virtual Force Field) mothod. The MVFF consists of the determination of the heading angles far track-keeping mode ($\psi_{ca}$)and collision avoidance mode ($\psi_{ca}$). The operator can choose the pattern of the track-keeping mode in the proposed algorithm. The collision avoidance algorithm can handle static and/or moving obstacles. These functons are implemented using fuzzy logic. Various simulation results verify the proposed alogorithm.

  • This paper describes a conceptual design of 10 MW class gearless type superconducting synchronous generator for wind turbine. The main benefits of gearless type generator are decrease of the process of maintenance and loss caused by drive-train. The designed generator improves efficiency of high-capacity wind turbine by applying superconducting coil making high magnetic field. Conventional wind turbines were investigated for up-scaling of generator and the generator had been designed with estimated design parameters using a finite elements method analysis tool.

  • This paper reports advantages of an insulationless high temperature superconductor (HTS) pancake coil compared with an insulated HTS pancake coil. The various characteristics of the insulationless HTS pancake coil were evaluated under charge-discharge conditions. Also over-current test was performed and the results were analysed to demonstrate that in terms of stability insulationless HTS pancake coil outperforms existing insulated HTS pancake coil.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode control method for step up DC-DC converter. For high performance control of converter, it requires the robustness between the input current and the output voltage. As a result, in spite of disturbance and parameter uncertainty, the proposed controller has the robustness to control the output voltage.

  • This paper derives a nominal state relationship (NSR) from the data of a nominal system. Through an example of a second order system, it is shown that the relationship can be derived only in the system with different real eigenvalues. In higher order system, the relationship is expressed by using neural network (NN). The derived NSR is used to design a noble sliding surface with a nominal system characteristic. By using the sliding surface, the robustness of the sliding mode control (SMC) is added to the pole-placement control.

  • A 79-year-old man was admitted to Samsung Changwon Hospital due to chest pain and dyspnea. The ejection fraction was 31% and mean pressure gradient between the left ventricle and aorta was 69.4 mmHg on echocardiography. Chest computed tomography showed severe calcification of the ascending aorta. Aortic valve replacement was successfully performed using a thoracic endovascular aortic repair balloon catheter without classic aortic cross clamping. The patient was discharged on the eleventh postoperative day.

  • Before applying the HTS power cable to the real utility, the system needs to be analyzed using certain simulation tools. The impedance of superconductor is changed due to the magnitude of current, temperature, and magnetic field. PSCAD/EMTDC does not provide the superconductor component which has the impedance characteristic. The authors have developed the HTS power cable component in EMTDC program which included the same electrical characteristics as real HTS power cable previously. Based on the research results, the authors analyzed fault current characteristics of HTS power cable using the developed EMTDC model component.

  • This paper summarizes the structural characterization of borassus fruit fibers by means of various characterization techniques, optimization of alkali treatment of borassus fruit fine fibers (BFF) with a 5% concentration sodium hydroxide solution for different time intervals (1, 4, 8 and 12 h) and the changes occurring in borassus fibers. This paper also discusses the manufacturing of BFF/PP compotes using MAPP as a compatibilizer in addition to alkali treatment. Composites were evaluated for their mechanical and morphological properties. The tensile strength and modulus, flexural strength and modulus and impact strength were increased for alkali treated/MAPP composites by 4.5%, 17%, 17.2 %, 9% and 10% respectively.

  • A novel method to derive a Nominal States Relationship (NSR) of a control system is proposed. The obtained relationship is used to design a sliding surface which can have the characteristic of a nominal system. With this sliding surface, a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) system which has the characteristics of the nominal system controlled by pole placement is designed for an uncertain system.

  • There are many problems in wire fabrication of long length Bi-2223 superconductor by using conventional extrusion method. They are mainly due to high surface resistance and inhomogeneous distribution of inner stress. Hydrostatic extrusion process will not only decrease the extrusion pressure but also enhance homogeneous deformation of material by reducing friction force between billet and container Hydrostatic extrusion method is considered to be useful fur fabrication of the homogeneous wire with high density. In this paper, hydrostatic extrusion process is introduced to fabricate Bi-2223 superconducting tape, and also discussed are the interface homogeneity and microstructural aspects of extruded BSCCO/Ag billet.
