Feeding Habits of Pseudoblennius percoides (Pisces; Cottidae) in an Eelgrass (Zostera marina) Bed of Dongdae Bay (동대만 잘피밭에 서식하는 돌팍망둑(Pseudoblennius percoides)의 식성)

  • Feeding habits of Pseudoblennius percoides collected from the eelgrass bed in Dongdae Bay from January to December 2005 were studied. P. percoides was a carnivore which mainly consumed fishes and caridean shrimps. Its diets included small quantities of mysids,amphipods (gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods), copepods, cephalopods, polychaetes,and crabs. P. percoides undergoes significant size-related changes; smaller fish (<3.0 cm SL) prey mainly copepods, gammarid amphipods, and mysids while the proportion of caridean shrimps and fishes increases with fish size. Fishes and caridean shrimps were major prey organisms for all seasons. Dietary breadth of P. percoides was lower with fish size and seasons.

  • Feeding habits of juvenile Liparis tanakai collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay were studied. L. tanakai (2.0-6.0 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (caprellids and gammarids) and caridean shrimps. Its diets also included a large amount of copepods, polychaetes and small fishes. Three distinct ontogenetic feeding groups were noted: (1) the individuals of 2.0-2.5 cm SL preyed heavily on copepods, (2) individuals of 2.5-4.0 cm SL fed mainly on amphipods. (3) individuals over 4.0 cm SL preyed mainly on caridean shrimps and small fishes. The dietary breadth of each size class showed relatively low value, and this means that juvenile L. tanakai depends on only few kinds of food organisms.

  • Feeding habits of Pseudoblennius cottoides collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay from January 1994 to December 1994 were studied. Pseudoblennius cottoides was a carnivore which mainly consumed fishes, caridean shrimps, and amphipods. Its diets included small Quantities of tanaids, copepods, isopods, mysids, and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Fishes were heavily selected as the body size of P. cottoides increases. Fishes and caridean shrimps were major prey organisms for all seasons.

  • Two caridean shrimps, Eualus biunguis (Rathbun, 1902) and Argis toyamaensis (Yokoya, 1933), collected from the Korean continental slope of the East Sea at depths of 850-870 m are reported as new to the Korean caridean fauna with brief descriptions and illustrations. A hippolytid shrimp, E. biunguis, is distinguished from the congeners by the minute che1alike appearance of dactyli of the last three pereopods and the large pyriform eye. A crangonid shrimp, A. toyamaensis, differs from the Korean species of the genus in having the posterior acute spines of submedian carinae on the sixth abdominal somite.

  • The feeding habits of Sebastes schlegeli collected from the Tongyeong marine ranching area throughout 2002 were studied. S. schlegeli is a carnivore (piscivore), and consumed mainly fish. Its diet also included a small amount of caridean shrimps, crabs, amphipods, polychaetes, and isopods. The diet of S. schlegeli underwent size-related changes. Small individuals (standard length (SL)<6 cm) fed mainly on fishes, caridean shrimps, and amphipods, and the proportion of fish increased with SL. Large individuals (SL>20 cm) ate fish predominately. The diet of S. schlegeli changes seasonally, and caridean shrimps were consumed mainly from May to July. The dietary breadth index of S. schlegeli varied with SL and season.

  • Feeding habits of Hapalogenys mucronatus (10.1~22.1 cm) collected from coastal waters off Sori Island, Yeosu, from June 2003 to May 2004 were studied. H. mucronatus is a carnivore which consumes mainly caridean shrimp, crabs, polychaetes, and amphipods. Its diet includes small quantities of bivalves, cephalopods, seagrass, hermit crabs, isopods, eggs, mysids, gastropods, and copepods. H. mucronatus undergoes significant size-related changes; smaller fish (10~11.9 cm) prey mainly on amphipods, shrimps and bivalves, while the proportion of caridean shrimp increases with fish size (12~17.9 cm). The larger fishes (18~22.1 cm) eat caridean shrimps and polychaetes.

  • Feeding habits of Sillago japonica collected from in an eelgrass (Zostera marina) bed in Jindong Bay, Korea were studied. S. japonica was a carnivore which consumed mainly gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, bivalves, caridean shrimps and crabs. Its diets also included a small amount of fishes, copepods and caprellid amphipods. The diet of S. japonica underwent significant size-related changes; small individuals (<5cm SL) fed mainly on gammarid amphipods and crab larvae, while proportion of polychaetes and bivalves increased with increasing fish size and gammarid amphipods were also important prey for medium size individuals (5.1-9.9cm SL). The large individuals (>10cm SL) ate polychaetes, caridean shrimps and crabs. The dietary breadth of S. japonica were varied with size. The diet of S. japonica also underwent seasonal changes that could be related to differences in prey availability; gammarid amphipods were mainly consumed in spring and polychaetes in summer.

Japonicus was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (gammarid amphipods and caprellid amphipods), crabs, caridean shrimps and copepods. Its diets included small quantities of fishes, mysids, polychaetes, tanaids and isopods. Three distinct ontogenetic feeding groups were noted : (1) 1~2 cm SL individuals preyed heavily on copepods. (2) 2~15 cm SL individuals preyed heavily on amphipods. (3) individuals over 15 cm SL preyed heavily on crabs, caridean shrimps and fishes. L. Japonicus showed seasonal changes in prey composition. These changes were not caused by seasonal changes in food availability, but by changes in the size composition of L. Japonicus occurred in the eelgrass bed.

It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, crab larvae and polychaetes were heavily selected with increasing fish size. Although copepods and crab larvae were major prey organisms for all seasons, the relative proportion of these two food items changed with season.

Pholis nebulosa was a carnivore which mainly consumed epiphytal amphipods. Its diets included minor quantities of caridean shrimps, isopods, copepods, tanaids and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid and caprellid amphipods were heavily selected with increasing fish size. Although gammarid and caprellid amphipods were major prey organisms for all seasons, the relative proportion of these two food items changed with season.
