  • A dual-phase ceramic membrane consisting of gadolinium-doped ceria (GDC) as an oxygen ion conducting phase and $MnCo_2O_4$ as an electron conducting phase was fabricated by sintering a GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ powder mixture. The $MnCo_2O_4$ was found to maintain its spinel structure at temperatures lower than $1200^{\circ}C$. (Mn,Co)(Mn,Co)$O_4$ spinel, manganese and cobalt oxides formed in the sample sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ in an air atmosphere. XRD analysis revealed that no reaction phases occurred between GDC and $MnCo_2O_4$ at $1200^{\circ}C$. The electrical conductivity did not exhibit a linear relationship with the $MnCo_2O_4$ content in the composite membranes, in accordance with percolation theory. It increased when more than 15 vol% of $MnCo_2O_4$ was added. The oxygen permeation fluxes of the composite membranes increased with increasing $MnCo_2O_4$ content and this can be explained by the increase in electrical conductivity. However, the oxygen permeation flux of the composite membranes appeared to be governed not only by electrical conductivity, but also by the microstructure, such as the grain size of the GDC matrix.

  • The low-cycle fatigue behaviour of a SiC-particulate-reinforced Al-Si cast alloy with two different volume fractions has been investigated from a series of strain-control led fatigue tests with zero and nonzero tensile mean strains. The composites including the unreinforced matrix alloy, exhibited cyclic hardening behaviour, with more pronounced strain-hardening for the composites with a higher volume fraction of the SiC particles. For the tensile mean strain tests, the initial high tensile mean stress relaxed to zero for the ductile Al-Si alloy, resulting in no influence of the tensile mean strain on the fatigue life of the matrix alloy. However, tensile mean strain for the composite caused tensile mean stresses and reduced fatigue life. The pronounced effects of mean strain on the low-cycle fatigue life of the composite compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy were attributed to the initial large prestrain and non-relaxing high tensile mean stress in the composite with very limited ductility and Cyclic plasticity. Fatigue damage parameter using strain energy, density efficiently accounted for the mean stress effects. Predicted fatigue life using the damage parameter correlated fairly well with the experimental life within a factor of 3. Also, the fatigue damage parameter indicated the inferior life in the low-cycle regime and superior life in the high-cycle regime for the composite, compared to the unreinforced matrix alloy.

  • Thermal conductivity is a very important factor for applicability and reliability in electrical devices. In this study, Al/graphite composite is fabricated by a mechanical alloying and heat-treatment and its physical properties are characterized. The XRD peak intensity of the $Al_4C_3$ ceramic phase observed in the heat-treated Al/graphite composite increased with heat-treatment temperature and time. The thermal conductivity of the heat-treated Al/graphite composite sample was very lower than that of the pure Al sample, and increased with heat-treatment temperature and time.

  • PURPOSE. There is insufficient data regarding the durability of porcelain laminate veneers bonded to existing composite fillings. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the fracture resistance and microleakage of porcelain laminate veneers bonded to teeth with existing composite fillings. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty maxillary central incisors were divided into three groups (for each group, n=10): intact teeth (NP), teeth with class III composite fillings (C3) and teeth with class IV cavities (C4). Porcelain laminate veneers were made using IPS-Empress ceramic and bonded with Panavia F2 resin cement. The microleakage of all of the specimens was tested before and after cyclic loading ($1{\times}10^6$ cycles, 1.2 Hz). The fracture resistance values (N) were measured using a universal testing machine, and the mode of failure was also examined. The statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. There was a significant difference in the mean microleakage of group C4 compared with group NT (P=.013). There was no significant difference in the fracture loads among the groups. CONCLUSION. The microleakage and failure loads of porcelain laminate veneers bonded to intact teeth and teeth with standard class III composite fillings were not significantly different.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color penetration of cavity margin with composite resin restorations in some Korean foods substance-soy sauce and hot bean paste. Fifty specimans which were extracted caries free third molar of young adults recently. All of the prepared 100 cavities were filled with two kinds of composite resin (Hipol$^{(R)}$and Restodent$^{(R)}$). The experimental specimans were divided into five groups by the following procedures. Group I : Filling of composite resin and polishing. Group II : Filling, polishing, etching of cavity and sealing. Group III : Etching, sealing, filling and polishing. Group IV : Etching, sealing, filling, polishing, and repeated of etching of cavity margin and sealing. Group V : Etching, sealing, filling, polishing, and sealing again without etching. Before examination, the restorated teeth were subjected to thermal cycling ($4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$). All the specimens were immersed in soy and 30% hot bean paste solution under $37^{\circ}C$ incubator during six weeks. Then, the specimens were sectioned bucco-lingually through the center of two restorations with diamond disk and examined under a. metallographic microscope. (Union 6617 U.S.A.) Thereafter, the degree of color penetration was calculated and analyzed. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The color penetration was the lowest in the procedure of Group III which was acid etching, sealing, composite resing filling, and polishing. 2. The color penetration occured in soy and hot bean paste, but the degree of penetration was not so significant statistically between them. 3. The degree of color penetration was not so significant statistically between Hipol$^{(R)}$ and Restondent$^{(R)}$.

  • The organic-inorganic composite membrane in polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have several fascinating technological advantages such as a proton conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical properties. As the inorganic filler, silicon carbide (SiC) fiber have been used in various fields due to its unique properties such as thermal stability, conductivity, and tensile strength. In this study, composite membrane was successfully fabricated by modified-silicon carbide fiber. Modified process, as a novel process in SiC, takes reaction by phosphoric acid after oxidation process (generated homogeniusly $SiO_2$ layer on SiC fiber). The mechanical property which was conducted by tensile test of the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was better than that of Aquivion casting membrane as well as ion cxchange capacity(IEC) and proton conductivity. In addition, the single cell performance was observed that the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was approximately $0.2A/cm^2$ higher than that of a Aquivion casting electrolyte membrane and electrochemical impedance was improved with the charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance.

  • We investigated the influence of several processes, including the preparation of slurry and preform and the heat-treatment of the preform, on the properties of composites to fabricate the carbon-fiber reinforced glass composites having good mechanical properties. Cerander was determined to be the best binder among Cerander, Rhoplex and Elvacite 2045 by the dipping test and the binder within a preform could be completely eliminatd by burning out the specimen under 10-6 Torr at 400$^{\circ}C$ for more than 1h. The fracture behavior of a composite was largely dependent on the uniformity of carbon-fiber distribution within the composite and the heat-treatment condition of the composite. The higher the glass content, the more difficult to obtain uniform distribution of carbon-fiber. As the hot-pressing temperature increased, the densification process of the composite and the formation of pore due to oxidation of carbon fiber occurred competitively. But, above 1000$^{\circ}C$ the latter played a predominant role. We could fabricated the densest 15 vol.% carbon-fiber-content glass composite having the highest toughness and flexural strength of 250 MPa by hot-pressing under 15 MPa at 900$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.

  • In this sturdy, large experimental (ISO 13785-2) was performed to analyze the building materials used in fire retardant materials for aluminum composite panel and in general properties. As a results, maximum temperature in the case of the general materials was measured in 210 seconds $1,021^{\circ}C$, the retardant materials was measured in 1,200 seconds early $1,190^{\circ}C$. The retardant material of aluminum composite panel, Fire behavior if the ignition is slow and the general materials in aluminum composite panel, fire ignition and combustion at the same time was growing rapidly. The general materials and flame-retardant material of aluminum composite panel was an obvious difference to the combustion ignition but after ignition combustion mode showed a similar pattern of the rapidly vertical spread of flame. The results of this study, in order to reduce the risk of aluminum composite panels for fire and the retardant materials used for ignition the slow should be actively encouraging. Also after the ignition, there is an urgent need to put out a fire in exterior materials for extinguishing facilities.

  • PVA/GLA/$Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ composite membranes were prepared through the reaction polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with glutaraldehyde (GLA) as a cross-linking agent and subsequently adding aluminum silicate ($Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$) as an inorganic material. The water uptake decreased as the GDL contents increased due to cross-linking process of PVA with GDL, and the ion conductivity increased as the $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ contents increased in PVA/GLA/$Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ composite membranes. The cross-linking structure of the polymers was confirmed using IR and the tendency of water uptake. The thermal analysis of the copolymers was carried out by TGA. TGA results showed that PVA/GLA composite membrane were more heat-resistant than PVA due to the cross-linking of PVA, and the heat stability of the composite membranes improved much more as the concentration of $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3SiO_2$ increased. Membranes prepared in this study seem to be have thermal stability and increase a tendency of the cation conductivity up to $60^{\circ}C$, but to be exhibit lower performance tendency at over $90^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it is necessary to do more aggressive effort to explore the possibility of application as an ion-conductive composite electrolyte.
