In this study an analytical tide model of uniform width with three sub-regions is presented. The three-subregions model takes into account step-like variations in depths in the direction of the channel as a way to examine the $M_2$ tide of the East China Sea (ECS) as well as the Yellow Sea (YS). A modified Proudman radiation condition has been applied at the northern open head, while the sea surface elevation is specified at the southern open boundary. It is seen that, due to the presence of an abrupt change in depth, co-amplitude lines of the $M_2$ tide are splitted to the east and west near the end of the ECS shelf region. Variations in depths, bottom friction and the open head boundary conditions all contribute to the determination of formation of amphidromes as well as overall patterns of $M_2$ tidal distribution. It is seen that increasing water depth and bottom friction in the ECS shelf results in the westward shift of the southern amphidrome. There is however no hint at all of the well-known degenerated tidal pattern being formed. It is inferred that a lateral variation of water depth has to be somehow incorporated to represent the tidal patterns in ECS in a realistic manner. Regarding the radiation factor introduced by Fang et al. (1991), use of a value larger than one, possibly with a phase shift, appears to be a proper way of incorporating the reflected waves from the northern Yellow Sea (NYS).
Surface texturing is widely applied to friction surfaces of various machine elements. Most of the theoretical studies have focused on isothermal (ISO) analyses which consider constant lubricant viscosity. However, there have been limited studies on the effect of oil temperature increase owing to viscous shear. Following the first part of the present study that investigated the effects of film-temperature boundary condition (FTBC) and groove number on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication characteristics of a surface-textured parallel thrust bearing with multiple rectangular grooves, this study focuses on the effect of groove depths. Current study numerically analyzes the continuity, Navier-Stokes, and energy equations with temperature-viscosity-density relations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, FLUENT. The results of variation in temperature, velocity, and pressure distributions as well as load-carrying capacity (LCC) and friction force indicate that groove depth and FTBC significantly influence the temperature distribution and pressure generation. The LCC is maximum near the groove depth at which the vortex starts, smaller than the ISO result. For intense grooves, the LCC of THD may be larger than that from ISO. The frictional force decreases as the groove becomes deeper, and decreases more significantly in the case of THD. The study shows that groove depth significantly influences the THD lubrication characteristics of surface-textured parallel thrust bearings.

In order to demonstrate the flow properties of the river bed and the design of hydraulic structures, the estimation of friction velocity is essentially required. However, existing friction velocity equations such as Log method and Power law have trouble to estimate the friction velocity because a boundary condition and various hydraulic properties are changed constantly in near the wall. In the present study, therefore, a new friction velocity equation that can minimize the parameters and reduce an error was suggested. To verify accuracy and reliability for the proposed equation, Clauser method, $\sqrt{gRI}$ method, reynolds stress method by Dr. Song were compared with the proposed method by estimated entropy parameter M for each channel. Consequently, the results show that uniform flow condition as well as non-uniform flow condition with highly accuracy nearly matched in case of accelerating non-uniform condition of $R^2=0.9621$, Decelerating Non Uniform condition of $R^2=0.9274$, Uniform condition of $R^2=0.8865$.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of the free stream turbulence intensity and Reynolds number on the heat transfer and flow characteristics In the linear turbine cascade. Profiles of the time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress were measured in the turbine cascade passage. The static pressure and heat transfer distributions on the blade suction and pressure surfaces were also measured. The experiments were made for the Reynolds number based on the chord length, Rec = $2.2{\times}10^4$ to $1.1{\times}10^5$ and the free stream turbulence intensity, $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% to 9.1 %. The uniform heat flux boundary condition on the blade surface was created using the gold film Intrex and the surface temperature was measured by liquid crystal, while hot wire probes were used for the flow measurements. The results show that the free stream turbulence promotes the boundary layer development and delays the flow separation point on the suction surface. It was found that the boundary layer flows on the suction surface for all Reynolds numbers tested with $FSTI_1$ = 0.6% are laminar. It was also found that the heat transfer coefficient on the blade surface increases as the free stream turbulence intensity increases and the flow separation point moves downstream with an increasing Reynolds number. The results of skin friction coefficients are in good agreement with the heat transfer results in that for $FSTI_1{\geq}2.6%$, the turbulent boundary layer separation occurs.

A modified model is proposed for calculation of transitional boundary layer flows. In order to develop the eddy viscosity model for the problem, the flow is divided into three regions; namely, pre-transition region, transition region and fully turbulent region. The pre-transition eddy-viscosity is formulated by extending the mixing length concept. In the transition region, the eddy-viscosity model employs two length scales, i.e., pre-transition length scale and turbulent length scale pertaining to the regions upstream and the downstream, respectively, and a universal model of stream-wise intermittency variation is used as a function bridging the pre-transition region and the fully turbulent region. The proposed model is applied to calculate three benchmark cases of the transitional boundary layer flows with different free-stream turbulent intensity (1%∼6%) under zero-pressure gradient. It was found that the profiles of mean velocity and turbulent intensity, local maximum of velocity fluctuations, their locations as well as the stream-wise variation of integral properties such as skin friction, shape factor and maximum velocity fluctuations are very satisfactorily predicted throughout the flow regions.

Thermal entrance lengths of turbulent tube flow for viscoelastic polymer solutions are investigated experimentally in the recirculating flow system with tubes of inside diameters 8.5mm(L/D=710) and 10.3mm(L/D=1158), respectively. In the present system, the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layers develop simultaneously from the beginning of the test section. To provide the boundary condition of constant heat flux at the wall, the test tubes are heated directly by electricity. The polymer solution used in the current study is 1000 wppm aqueous solution of polyacrylamide(Separan AP-273). The apparent viscosity of the polymer solutions circulating in the flow system are measured by the capillary tube viscometer at regular time intervals. Thermal entrance lengths vary due to the rate of degradation. The entrance lengths of degraded polymer solutions are about 500~600 times the diameter. However, the entrance lengths of fresh polymer solutions are greater than the lengths of the test tubes used in this study suggesting that thermal entrance lengths for viscoelastic polymer solutions are greater than 1100 tube times the diameters. Friction factor is almost insensitive to the degradation, but the heat transfer $j_{H}$-factor is affected seriously by degradation. Based on the present experimental data of fresh solutions a correlation for the heat transfer $j_{H}$-factor is presented.ted.

The stability of the two-phase flow in a heated channel is of great importance in the design and operation of the boilers and light water nuclear reactors, because it can cause flow oscillations and lead to a violation of thermal limits with resultant overheating of the channels and cladding. This paper presents a systematic evaluation to the variation effects of the basic four (4) dimensionless parameters in a homogeneous equilibrium model. The flow stability is examined on the ground of static characteristic curves. The complicated transfer function of flow dynamics which gives consideration to the transport lag of density wave is derived, and the transient flow stability is analysed by applying the Nyquist stability criterion in control engineering. The analysis results summed up as follows 1. The coolant flow becomes stable in large friction number and specific flow, while it is unstabale in small friction number and flow. 2. Large phase-change number and Froude number destabilize the two-phase flow, but small numbers stabilize it. The effect to variation of phase-change number is more dominant compared with Froude number. 3. The dynamic analysis is required to hold the sufficient safety of heated channels since only static results does not keep it. The special attention could be payed in the design and operation of heat engines, because the unstaable region exists within the stable boundary at small and middle phase-change number and Froude number.

Heat-transfer enhancement is seeked through modifications of fin surface. Real life plate-fin heat exchangers have complex three-dimensional geometries. Fins can have arrays of dimples and are attached to rows of penetrating tubes. To isolate the effect of surface modification, we model the real flow by a two-dimensional channel flow with a dimple on one side. The flow is analysed by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation by a finite volume method on a generalized boundary-fitted coordinate. Results show a trapped vortex inside the dimple for all cases computed. Local maximum of Nusselt number occurs near the downstream end of the dimple, due to such a vortex. Location of the vortex does not change with respect to the wall temperature change, but moved downstream when Reynolds number increases. This, together with the results that in all cases vortex core is somewhat downstream of the dimple center, suggests that the mean flow above continuously feeds the kinetic energy to the recirculating flow. Heat transfer enhancement and pressure losses are studied through analysing the relevant dimensionless parameters like, Nusselt number and friction factor. In all cases computed, dimpled channel flow experiences less pressure loss than two-dimensional Poiseuille flow.
Numerical calculations have been carried out for the mixed convection flow in a concentric curved annulus with constant heat flux boundary condition at inner wall. The flow is assumed to be fully developed so as to maintain a constant streamwise pressure and temperature gradient. Computations have been performed for flows of radius ratio 0.2 and 0.5 with the Dean number lying in the range 0$K^{1/2}$ for the wide range of the Dean number considered here.
Through modeling fault network using thin plate finite element technique in the San Andreas Fault system with slip rate over 1mm/year, as well as elevation, heat flow, earthquakes, geodetic data and crustal thickness, we compare the results with velocity boundary conditions of plate based on the NUVEL-1 plate model and the approximation of deformation in the Great Basin region. The frictional and dislocation creep constants of the crust are calculated to reproduce the observed variations in the maximum depth of seismicity which corresponds to the temperature ranging from $350^{\circ}C$ to $410^{\circ}C$. The rheologic constants are defined by the coefficient of friction on faults, and the apparent activation energy for creep in the lower crust. Two parameters above represent systematic variations in three experiments. The pattern of model indicates that the friction coefficient of major faults is 0.17~0.25. we test whether the weakness of faults is uniform or proportional to net slip. The geologic data show a good agreement when fault weakness is a trend of an additional 30% slip dependent weakening of the San Andreas. The results of study suggest that all weakening is slip dependent. The best models can be explained by the available data with RMS mismatch of as little as 3mm/year, so their predictions can be closely related with seismic hazard estimation, at least along faults where no data are available.
