  • The purpose of this study is to effectively mitigate the bending displacement that occurs in the bridge due to forced vibration. We developed CTMD (Combine Tuned Mass Damper) that combines the relationship between spring and mass to control the bending behavior of simple beams. The experiment was conducted to confirm the control effect according to the change in the mass ratio of the developed CTMD. The developed CTMD is designed and manufactured so that the mass ratio can be adjusted according to the characteristics of the bridge. The maximum load of the spring applied to CTMD was fixed at 33.15 N. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed CTMD, a simple beam composed of hinges and rollers as boundary conditions was fabricated. In the experimental method, a CTMD was installed in the center of a simple beam and the deflection displacement according to the mass ratio was measured. The shaking condition was shaken at 3 Hz to induce the maximum bending behavior of the simple beam. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that when the optimal mass ratio was 2.1, the damping rate of the bending behavior displacement was about 71.2 %, indicating the best control effect.

  • The seismic isolation system have been applied in order to protect the collapse of bridge by seismic load and the vertical load transmitted from the superstructure. However, the failure and damages of non-shrinkage mortar, isolator and wedge in total 12 bridge were reported by Pohang Earthquake. In this study, the damage mechanism and behavior characteristics of elastomeric bearing by an earthquake were evaluated to consider the seismic isolation system including non-shrinkage mortar and the seat concrete of pier. To discuss the effect of installed wedge and damage mode of elastomeric bearing, the compressive-shear tests were carried out. Also, the mechanical behaviors and damage mechanism for each component of elastomeric bearing were evaluated by using finite element analysis. From the test results, the cracks were created at boundary between non-shrinkage mortar and seismic isolator and the shear loads were rapidly increased after bump into wedge. The cause for damage mechanism of seismic isolation system was investigated by comparing stress distribution of anchor socket and non-shrinkage mortar depending on wedge during earthquake.

  • FPSO consists of topside modularized plants for production of crude oil, and hullside structures that serve as support for the topside and storage of produced crude oil. The structural behavior of the FPSO topside module and its supporting hull depends on the interface structure that connects them, and the interface structure consists of a combination of individual unit support structures called Module Support Seat (MSS). Types of interface structures are various and, accordingly, the basic design of the FPSO topside module structure is greatly influenced, so various design methods should be considered from the initial design phase. Structural design of FPSO topside module requires consideration of the number of MSSs, connection type, and structural analysis options such as the range of finite element models, load conditions, and boundary conditions for verification of structural strength. In this study, the comparison combination cases for the above considerations were derived and the strength evaluation was performed, and the structural behavior characteristics of the topside module were compared and analyzed through a detailed review of the analysis results. The results of this study are considered to be a good reference for designing a more reliable topside module structure.

  • In this study, the wave responses in a 'Y'shape water channel resonator for amplifying wave energy of a low density has been investigated. A water channel resonator is composed of the long channel and wave guider installed at the entrance. If the period of the incident waves coincides with the natural period of the fluid in a water channel resonator, resonance occurs and the internal fluid amplifies highly to a standing wave form. In order to analyze the wave response in a water channel resonator, we used the matched asymptotic expansion method and boundary element method. The both results were in good agreement with the results of the model test carried out in the two-dimensional wave tank of Jeju National University. Wave guider has an optimum length and installation angle according to the period of the incident wave, and especially effective in enhancing the amplification factor in a period range deviated from the resonance period. It is expected that the wave energy can be effectively extracted by placing the point absorber wave energy converter at the position of anti-node where the maximum wave height is formed by the internal fluid resonance.

  • The adsorption equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters of brilliant green adsorbed by coconut based granular activated carbon were determined from various initial concentrations ($300{\sim}500mg\;L^{-1}$), contact time (1 ~ 12 h), and adsorption temperature (303 ~ 323 K) through batch experiments. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura, and Elovich isotherm models. The estimated Langmuir dimensionless separation factor ($R_L=0.018{\sim}0.040$) and Freundlich constant ($n^{-1}=0.176{\sim}0.206$) show that adsorption of brilliant green by activated carbon is an effective treatment process. Adsorption heat constants ($B=12.43{\sim}17.15J\;mol^{-1}$) estimated by the Temkin equation corresponded to physical adsorption. The isothermal parameter ($A_{HJ}$) by the Harkins-Jura equation showed that the heterogeneous pore distribution increased with increasing temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity by the Elovich equation was found to be much smaller than the experimental value. The adsorption process was best described by the pseudo second order model, and intraparticle diffusion was a rate limiting step in the adsorption process. The intraparticle diffusion rate constant increased because the dye activity increased with increases in the initial concentration. Also, as the initial concentration increased, the influence of the boundary layer also increased. Negative Gibbs free energy ($-10.3{\sim}-11.4kJ\;mol^{-1}$), positive enthalpy change ($18.63kJ\;mol^{-1}$), and activation energy ($26.28kJ\;mol^{-1}$) indicate respectively that the adsorption process is spontaneous, endothermic, and physical adsorption.

  • It is difficult to design because of the plug-holing phenomenon in which the amount of smoke discharged from the vertical vent is smaller than the designed amount of smoke. In this study, the effect of cross-sectional area ratio of tunnel and natural ventilation and heat release rate of fire source on plug-holing phenomenon occurring in natural ventilation system was experimentally analyzed. In the experiment model reduced to 1/20 size, the aspect ratio of the tunnel and the vertical vent was fixed, and the influence on the plug-holing phenomenon was confirmed by varying the sectional area ratio of the tunnel and the vertical vent. Experimental results show that the plug-holing phenomenon is caused by the comparison of the smoke boundary layer temperature with the temperature in the vertical vents, and the flow and temperature distribution characteristics under the vertical vents are changed as the cross-sectional area ratio of the tunnel and vertical vents increases. The plug-holing phenomenon is affected by the cross-sectional area ratio between the tunnel and the vertical ventilation. The greater the cross-sectional area ratio, the greater the probability of plug-holing.

  • Crop models depend on a large number of input parameters including the cultivar parameters that represent the genetic characteristics of a given cultivar. The cultivar parameters have been estimated using high quality data for crop growth, which require considerable costs and efforts. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of using low quality data for the parameter estimation. In the present study, the cultivar parameters for cv. Shindongjin were estimated using the data obtained from the report of new cultivars development and research from 2005 to 2016. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the heading dates were less than 3 days when the parameters associated with phenology were estimated. In contrast, the coefficient of determination for yield tended to be less than 0.1. The large errors incurred by the fact that no growth data collected over a season was used for parameter estimation. This suggests that detailed observation data needs to be prepared for parameter calibration, which would be aided by remote sensing approaches. The occurrence of natural disasters during a growing season has to be considered because crop models cannot take into account the effects of those events. Still, our results provide a reasonable range for the parameters, which could be used to set the boundary of a given parameter for cultivars similar to cv. Shindongjin in further studies.

  • The adsorption of disperse yellow 3 (DY 3) on granular activated carbon (GAC) was investigated for isothermal adsorption and kinetic and thermodynamic parameters by experimenting with initial concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH of the dye as adsorption parameters. In the pH change experiment, the adsorption percent of DY 3 on activated carbon was highest in the acidic region, pH 3 due to electrostatic attraction between the surface of the activated carbon with positive charge and the anion (OH-) of DY 3. The adsorption equilibrium data of DY 3 fit the Langmuir isothermal adsorption equation best, and it was found that activated carbon can effectively remove DY 3 from the calculated separation factor (RL). The heat of adsorption-related constant (B) from the Temkin equation did not exceed 20 J mol-1, indicating that it is a physical adsorption process. The pseudo second order kinetic model fits well within 10.72% of the error percent in the kinetic experiments. The plots for Weber and Morris intraparticle diffusion model were divided into two straight lines. The intraparticle diffusion rate was slow because the slope of the stage 2 (intraparticle diffusion) was smaller than that of stage 1 (boundary layer diffusion). Therefore, it was confirmed that the intraparticle diffusion was rate controlling step. The free energy change of the DY 3 adsorption by activated carbon showed negative values at 298 ~ 318 K. As the temperature increased, the spontaneity increased. The enthalpy change of the adsorption reaction of DY 3 by activated carbon was 0.65 kJ mol-1, which was an endothermic reaction, and the entropy change was 2.14 J mol-1 K-1.

  • Noise in skull X-ray imaging is inevitable, which reduces imaging quality and diagnostic accuracy and increases errors due to the nature of digital imaging devices. Increasing the dose can attenuate noise, but that could lead to big problems with higher exposure dose received by patients. Thus, noise reduction algorithms are actively being studied at low doses to solve dose problems and reduce noise at the same time. Wiener filter and median filter have been widely used, with the disadvantages of poor noise reduction efficiency and loss of much information about imaging boundary. The purpose of this study is to apply total variation (TV) algorithm to skull X-ray imaging that can compensate for the problems of previous noise reduction efficiency to assess quantitatively and compare them. For this study, skull X-ray imaging is obtained using various kVp and mAs using the skull phantom using the X-ray device of Siemens. In addition, contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and coefficient of variation (COV) are compared and measured when noisy image, median filter, Wiener filter and TV algorithm were applied to each phantom imaging. Experiments showed that when TV algorithms were applied, CNR and COV characteristics were excellent under all conditions. In conclusion, we've been able to see if we can use TV algorithm to improve image quality and CNR could be seen to increase due to the decrease in noise as the amount of increased mAs. On the other hand, COV decreased as the amount of increased mAs, and when kVp increased, noise was reduced and the transmittance was increased, so COV was reduced.

  • Part-time jobs in Sweden are highly feminized yet are in fair conditions in terms of job security, earnings, and collective representation. Three points are considered to be important to understand why part-time work in Sweden carries such positive characteristics. First, the part-time work in Sweden is widely spread not as a result of employers' need for labor flexibilization but as means to enhance the work-life balance, a value pursued within a broader social policy package to change the breadwinner model. Second, discrimination against part-time workers is restrained in Sweden because the boundary between part-time and full-time is not conspicuous. Most of part-time jobs are occupied by regular workers who exert the right to part-time work, hence may go back to the full-time status any time. Third, the regulation on overtime work of part-time workers as well as full-time workers is strong. It is largely agreed among researchers that part-time work contributed greatly to an increase of female employment rate in Sweden. Since the 1970s, the increased availability of part-time jobs induced married women who used to be economically inactive to the labor market and maintained them to be economically active throughout the child rearing period. From the gender perspective, one may still raise issues regarding part-time work in Sweden such as persistent feminization and strong occupational sex segregation. However, the observed trend shows that the part-time work in Sweden has functioned more as a stepping stone to the full-time work for women than as a women's trap.
