The contact pressure in jointed plates was measured by means of an improved ultrasonic technique. In order to get calibration curve, the relationship between contact pressure and ratio of boundary and bottom echo of normal beam probes were obtained for the calibration blocks with various surface roughness. The ratio of boundary and bottom echoes were measured for the upper/under plates locally compressed with uniform pressure, and the distribution of contact pressure was obtaines. The measured pressure has a good agreement with results of FEM analysis. Thus the proposed ultrasonic method in this work is very useful to measure the contact pressure.
Rotating flow of a stratified fluid contained in a circular cylinder with unstable temperature gradient imposed on the side wall of it has been numerically studied. The temperatures at the endwall disks are constant. The top disk of the container is coider than that of the bottob disk, as much as the temperature difference n${\Delta}$T, (0${\leq}$n${\leq}$3). Flows in the vessel are driven by an impulsive rotation of the hot bottom disk with respect to the central axis of the cylinder. Flow details have been acquired. For this flow, the principal balance in the interior core is characterized by a relationship between the radial temperature gradient and the vertical shear in the azimuthal velocity. As the buoyancy effect becomes appreciable, larger portions of the meridional fluid transport are long-circuit from the bottom disk to the interior region via the side wall.
A theoretical study is made of the flow in a confined cylindrical container with differential rotating top and bottom disks. Two kinds of theoretical solution for the azimuthal velocity were obtained: one is an exact solution of Bessel function type and the other is an approximate solution of exponential function type which comes from WKB approximation. Both theoretical solutions are shown to be self consistent with each other as well as a good agreement with previous studies. Moreover, in a range of relatively low Reynolds number, the obtained solution of Bessel function type shows better result than previous solutions.

Uniformity of velocity is quite important design points of a vertical laminar flow type clean room. In the present paper, flows in a room with a bottom pannel are numerically simulated by using a low-Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ model, and a new flow model of the pannel are suggested. Resistance coefficient of the pannel and size of the exhaust channel show considerable effects on flow pattern and uniformity of flow on the bottom. Reflection coefficient also has important roles. A possibility to obtain the uniform and unidirectional flow is tested by adjusting the distribution of resistance coefficient of the pannel. Such a numerical simulation of the flow will be a good method to get optimun design parameters.

To insure the safety of the drainage sluice, topogrophical change due to erosion as well as capability of discharging the design flow in a very important factor. In consideration of the fact that the drainage sluice is built in the sea, its construction has many topographically restricted problems and naturally requires a completeness of research and experiment. This thesis is a comparative and analytic study of discharging flow acting on the erosion at the bottom of the structure on the basis of the measured velocity on the downstream channel of the drainage sluice. (1) The measured velocity shows a little higher values than the computed velocity, because the measured velocity was observed at the surface of the stream. There fore, it is reasonable that the compated velocity should be taken in this study. (2) The field observation was conducted to have the measurement of the flow velocity without surveying the area of flow. Therefore, the coefficient of discharge could not be computed. The survey of the area of flow is planned to be conducted along with the measurement of the flow velocity. (3) The apron of the drainage sluice is free discharging type and it was designed to be about 80m in length less than it should be. (4) The apron of free flow discharging type should have a solid foundation to protect the structure by preventing erosion damage to upstream and downstream channels against weathering of rock and strong torrent. Whether free flow discharging type or energy-dissipating type is best chosen depends on the topographical condition of the forage site, therefore, there would be a comparative study before the final decision was made about the protrection for the structure. (5) It is considered to be appropriate that the design and construction of the drainage sluice should have a complete study which is based on hydraulie model test before the type of protection is decided. (6) It is much requested that a variety of experiment equipments be installed and observed to study the protection for the drainage sluice.
In this study, breakwater model which has several outlet pipes to discharge heated water is settled in the experimental open channel and velocity distribution of wall jet is measured. Numerical simulation of velocity structure of wall jet using 3-dimensional computer model. Fluent model, is also carried out. The calculated results are verified with the experimental results and the flow characteristics of wall jet are investigated. The length of zone of flow establishment of wall jet is shorter than that of free jet, and the diminution rate of jet centerline longitudinal velocity is larger than that of free jet. Characteristics of buoyant jet and non-buoyant simple jet simulated by Fluent model are compared. Near the outlet pipe, in the region where x/lQ is over 15, this is reversed. Comparison of vertical distribution of longitudinal velocity shows that positive velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger than that of buoyant jet in the bottom layer and in the upper layer, negative velocity of non-buoyant jet is bigger too. Flow separation in free surface of the buoyant jet occurs in smaller distances from the outlet than the non-buoyant jet. Buoyant jet expands faster than the non-buoyant jet in vertical direction.
A mathematical model for predicting the liquid circulation velocity in an airlift reactor was developed based on the mechanical energy balance of the fluid circulation loop. The model considered the energy loss due to a 90° turn, the energy loss due to friction, and the energy loss due to the change in cross-sectional area at each part of the reactor. The model that separately considered the loss coefficients related to friction, direction change, and cross-sectional area change was able to predict the liquid circulation velocity better than the previous model using lumped parameters. The liquid circulation velocity was measured by the tracer pulse method. Most of our experimental results obtained in external-loop airlift reactors, which had the top and bottom connecting pipes, as well as other investigators' results obtained in various types of airlift reactors, were well predicted by the developed model with an error within 20%. Useful empirical equations for the loss coefficient related to the 90° turn of the circulating fluid were obtained in external and internal-loop airlift reactors and used to predict the liquid circulation velocity.
In order to study gas hydrate, potential future energy resources, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources has conducted seismic reflection survey in the East Sea since 1997. one of evidence for presence of gas hydrate in seismic reflection data is a bottom simulating reflector (BSR). The BSR occurs at the interface between overlaying higher velocity, hydrate-bearing sediment and underlying lower velocity, free gas-bearing sediment. That is often characterized by large reflection coefficient and reflection polarity reverse to that of seafloor reflection. In order to apply depth migration to seismic reflection data. we need high performance computers and a parallelizing technique because of huge data volume and computation. Phase shift plus interpolation (PSPI) is a useful method for migration due to less computing time and computational efficiency. PSPI is intrinsically parallelizing characteristic in the frequency domain. We conducted conventional data processing for the gas hydrate data of the Ease Sea and then applied prestack depth migration using message-passing-interface PSPI (MPI_PSPI) that was parallelized by MPI local-area-multi-computer (MPI_LAM). Velocity model was made using the stack velocities after we had picked horizons on the stack image with in-house processing tool, Geobit. We could find the BSRs on the migrated stack section were about at SP 3555-4162 and two way travel time around 2,950 ms in time domain. In depth domain such BSRs appear at 6-17 km distance and 2.1 km depth from the seafloor. Since energy concentrated subsurface was well imaged we have to choose acquisition parameters suited for transmitting seismic energy to target area.
This study investigates the difference of sound velocity (compressional wave velocity) between gas hydrate-bearing sediments and nongas hydrate-bearing sediments in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea. We use a dataset measured from one site in the central part of the Ulleung Basin. Sound velocity for gas hydrate-bearing sediment shows the range from 1600 m/s to 2200 m/s. However, the value for nongas hydrate-bearing sediment is mostly around 1500 m/s, being less than 1400 m/s below 140 m subbottom depth. This trend is probably due to the presence of free gas below BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector). Gas hydrate-bearing sediments show high value (maximum 150 Ohm-m) of resistivity. The physical properties between gas hydrate-bearing sediment and nongas hydrate-bearing sediment are characterized by the different patterns due to the presence of gas hydrate in comparison with those of marine unconsolidated sediments. Therefore, in order to investigate acoustic and physical properties for gas hydrate-bearing sediments, the study for the occurrence type and the amount of gas hydrates should be conducted simultaneously.
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers(ADCPs) have capability to concurrently capitalize three-dimensional velocity vector and bathymetry with highly efficient and rapid manner, and thereby enabling ADCPs to document the hydrodynamic and morphologic data in very high spatial and temporal resolution better than other contemporary instruments. However, ADCPs are also limited in terms of the inevitable unmeasured regions near bottom, surface, and edges of a given cross-section. The velocity in those unmeasured regions are usually extrapolated or assumed for calculating flow discharge, which definitely affects the accuracy in the discharge assessment. This study aimed at scrutinizing a conventional extrapolation method(i.e., the 1/6 power law) for estimating the unmeasured regions to figure out the accuracy in ADCP discharge measurements. For the comparative analysis, we collected spatially dense velocity data using ADV as well as stationary ADCP in a real-scale straight river channel, and applied the 1/6 power law for testing its applicability in conjunction with the logarithmic law which is another representative velocity law. As results, the logarithmic law fitted better with actual velocity measurement than the 1/6 power law. In particular, the 1/6 power law showed a tendency to underestimate the velocity in the near surface region and overestimate in the near bottom region. This finding indicated that the 1/6 power law could be unsatisfactory to follow actual flow regime, thus that resulted discharge estimates in both unmeasured top and bottom region can give rise to discharge bias. Therefore, the logarithmic law should be considered as an alternative especially for the stationary ADCP discharge measurement. In addition, it was found that ADCP should be operated in at least more than 0.6 m of water depth in the left and right edges for better estimate edge discharges. In the future, similar comparative analysis might be required for the moving boat ADCP discharge measurement method, which has been more widely used in the field.
