  • Most of the developed countries and Korea have continued to invest much money in developing low-carbon vehicles such as electric car, methanol car and hydrogen car to replace the conventional fossil fuel vehicles. Government and local governments of each country, however, grope to construct roads for bicycle and public bicycle rental systems because bicycle is the only ultimate and feasible non-pollution transportation. Most of the current bicycle monitoring systems have achieved automation of rental process in bicycle stations, but they can not monitor bicycles in use. This paper develops GPS-CDMA modem combined terminals and implements a LBS-based bicycle monitoring system using them for public bicycle rental system. The monitoring system collects location information from GPS-CDMA modem combined terminals attached on bicycles and presents the moving tracks of bicycles on a GIS map for easy return and redistribution of bicycles. Also, the system helps to prevent from theft and vandalism of bicycles and to recommend the nearest bicycle station.

  • Bicycle shares road with various traffic elements like car, pedestrian and, the number of bicycle user is increasing in recent. Therefore, bicycle accident continuously increases. Especially in complex traffic environment, bicycle accident which collides with moving object such as pedestrian occupies many parts of bicycle accident in the reason that the cyclist does not recognize moving object. In this paper, to reduce or avoid the bicycle accident, we propose the architecture of bicycle collision avoidance system in which that cyclist can get the information about moving object by connecting bicycle to network of vehicles and does some action for avoiding collision. In our architecture, when traffic element such as car recognizes moving object, it decides the moving direction of object, and transfers information about moving direction via vehicles network. Bicycle collision avoidance system from our proposed architecture receives this information, and alerts to cyclist when the moving object influences the safety of bicycle.

  • Recently, people's interest in particulate matter (PM) has been increasing, due to its hazardous health effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentrations and as well as the inhaled weight of PM, correlated with person's heart rate in subway, bus, vehicle and bicycle in the major public transportation (Sadang - Jamsil and Nowon - Dongdaemun) in Seoul. The concentration of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were measured from each of transportation means and calculated the average concentrations which were 87.2 and $57.8{\mu}g/m^3$ for subway, 62.8 and $42.5{\mu}g/m^3$ for vehicle, 61.5 and $36.8{\mu}g/m^3$ for bus and 53.0 and $29.4{\mu}g/m^3$ for bicycle in $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ respectively. Inhalation dose for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were estimated at 248.1 and $139.4{\mu}g$ for bicycle, 56.7 and $39.3{\mu}g$ for vehicle, 49.4 and $29.9{\mu}g$ for bus and 44.3 and $29.1{\mu}g$ for subway, respectively. Even though subway had the highest concentration, the highest inhalation dose was the bicycle. It was due to the long travel time-exposure and breathing rate which leads to maximum of $PM_{10}$ 5.6 and $PM_{2.5}$ with 4.8 times inhalation dose comparing with other modes of transportation. With regards to future studies, the amount of inhalation in each transportation means should be considered in risk assessments of PM.

  • Existing studies on the bicycle road were mostly for the promotion of bicycle road through the creation of bicycle road. However, as the gradually increase of bicycle users, it has been required service based on low carbon green growth in order to promote the use of bicycles which are green means of transportation. Analysis of existing bicycle use information is mainly based on calculating the amount of exercise, so the diverse needs of bicycle user does not accommodated. Therefore, in this study, it is proposed that methodology compute to reduce cost or amount of carbon dioxide, fuel, and processing costs of global warming by using bicycle. For this, a program is implemented to display bicycle use information provided in the form of GPX based on Google Earth in three-dimensional environment and to service based on low carbon, green growth. The developed program is compared with existing commercial software. Through this study, new services have been developed to carry out low carbon and green growth in terms of bicycle users, and it is considered that the services can be applied to devices such as smart phones.

  • As a solution for environmental problems caused by increasing number of vehicles, it is encouraged to use a bicycle as an environment-friendly transportation method. To vitalize the bicycle usage, it is a necessary to construct bicycle roads that are safe and suitable for users. Based on the previous research results, we assume the main purposes of bicycle usages are mainly local leisure activity and school commuting. Thus, the proposed method finds the shortest link between the existing bicycle road network and bicycle usage facilities such as leisure activity places or schools over public road network. Then, we carry out the RTK DGPS survey for the candidate links, and analyze the slopes of them. When the slope of a found link is larger than a threshold, an alternative link is re-found for the safety and convenience of a bicycle user. The proposed method is applied to the real bicycle road network in Mokpo, Chunnam and the results are discussed.

  • Many problems, such as unexpected delay and collision with pedestrians or vehicles, occur generally at signalized intersections where bicycle users are frequently involved. These problems have hindered bicycle users from riding bicycles on urban highways. The aim of this study is to suggest proper traffic signal operation methods for safe and convenient highway crossing of bicycles. Three types of crossing methods at signalized intersections are proposed and analyzed: (1) indirect left turn, (2) direct left turn on an exclusive bicycle lane, and (3) direct left turn on a bicycle box. The VISSIM simulation tests were conducted based on fifty-four operation scenarios prepared by varying vehicle and bicycle traffic volumes. Both delay and the number of stops are used as the measures of effectiveness in the analysis. The results from the three-legged signalized intersections suggested that (1) the indirect left turn is appropriate when vehicle demand is high while bicycle demand is not, (2) direct left turn on an exclusive bicycle lane is appropriate when both vehicle and bicycle demands are high, and (3) direct left turn on a bicycle box is appropriate when both vehicle and bicycle demands are light.

  • In this paper, it shows optimal inventory level of bicycle sharing service terminal by maintaining the lowest costs. As the interest to environment and exhaustion of resource increases globally, investment to sustainable transportation increases around advanced countries and interest to efficient transportation, managing and consuming of vehicle increases also. Vehicle sharing service is a model of rental car where customer rent cars for short periods of time often by the hour and its users are increasing for the reason that it is more convenient than car rent. In addition, bicycle sharing service is one of the major parts in vehicle sharing program and many of country are already managing it. This paper proposes optimal inventory levels of vehicle sharing service's terminal by using simulation calculating operation costs of vehicle sharing service.

  • Public bicycles are a representative eco-friendly transportation means that can reduce carbon emissions and play an important role in first/last mile mobility and that can be linked to public transportation in the future MaaS era. In 2008, Changwon City started operating donor bicycles for the first time in Korea. However, as the infrastructure of public bicycles has expanded without a theoretical basis for over 10 years, operating costs are increasing due to a decrease in operational efficiency, which makes it difficult to quantitatively expand the service. In this study, a method for calculating the number of stands suitable for the use of public bicycles was presented, and an efficiency index was developed to evaluate the efficiency of public bicycle infrastructure. The method presented in this study was found by examining the relationship between numbers of rentals and returns of public bicycles and the number of bicycle holders. It is expected that the results can be used by other local governments.

  • This thesis aims to improve the safety of bicycle traffic for activating the use of bicycle, main means of non-powered and non-carbon transportation in order to cope with worldwide crisis such as climate change and energy depletion and to implement sustainable traffic system. In this regard, I analyzed the problem of bicycle roads currently installed and operated, and developed the bicycle accident forecasting model. Following are the processes for this. First, this study presented the current status of bicycle road in Korea as well as accident data, collect the data on bicycle traffic accidents generated throughout the country for recent 3 years (2009~2011) and analyzed the features of bicycle traffic accidents based on the data. Second, this study selected the variable affecting the number of bicycle accidents through accident feature analysis of bicycle accidents at Jeollanam-do, and developed accident forecast model using the multiple regression analysis of 'SPSS Statistics 21'. At this time, the number of accidents due to extension per road types (crossing, crosswalk, other single road) was used. To verify the accident forecast model deduced, this study used the data on bicycle accident generated in Gwangju, 2011, and compared the prediction value with actual number of accidents. As a result, it was found out that reliability of accident forecast model was secured through reconciling with actual number of cases except certain data. Third, this study carried out field survey on the bicycle road as well as questionnaire on satisfaction of bicycle road and use of bicycle for analysis of bicycle road problems, and presented safety improvement measures for the problems deduced as well as bicycle activation plans. This study is considered to serve as the fundamental data for planning and reorganizing of bicycle road in the future, and expected to improve safety of bicycle users and to promote activation of bicycle use as the means of transportation.
