  • As environmentally friendly energy takes center stage, interests for Electric Vehicles/Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs/PHEVs) are getting increase. With this trend, there is no doubt EVs will take large portion to penetrations of total cars. Therefore, accurate EV modeling is required. Battery is one of the main components with the power system view of aspect. Hence, in this paper, reviews and discussions of some types of batteries for EV are contained by considering energy density and weight of the batteries. In addition, simulations of Li-Ion battery are accomplished with various variables such as temperature, capacity fading and charge/discharge current. It is confirmed that temperature is the main factor of capacity fading. Validation of the modeled battery is also conducted by comparing it with commercialized battery.

  • The objective of this study was to design and model the PEM fuel cell excavator with supercapacitor/battery hybrid power source to increase efficiency as well as eliminate greenhouse gas emission. With this configuration, the system can get rid of the internal combustion engine, which has a low efficiency and high emission. For the analysis and simulation, the governing equations of the PEM system, the supercapacitor and battery were derived. These simulations were performed in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The hydraulic modeling of the excavator was also presented, and its model implemented in AMESim and studied. The whole system model was built in a co-simulation environment, which is a combination of MATLAB/Simulink and AMESim software. The simulation results were presented to show the performance of the system.

  • Fuel consumption rates of electric vehicles strongly depend on their battery performance. Because the battery performance is sensitive to the operating temperature, temperature management of the battery ensures its performance and durability. In particular, the temperature distribution among modules in the battery pack affects the cooling characteristics. This study focuses on the thermal modeling of a battery pack to observe the temperature distribution among the modules. The battery model is a prismatic model of 10 NiMH battery modules. The thermal model of the battery consists of heat generation, convective heat transfer through the channel and conduction heat transfer among modules. The heat generation is calculated by the electric resistance heat during the charge/discharge state. The model is used to determine a strategy for proper thermal management in Electric vehicles.

  • To address environmental challenges and improve energy efficiency, the adoption of electric vehicles has led to a surge in related research. However, to comprehensively understand the research trends within the field of electric vehicles, it is necessary to systematically analyze vast amounts of data. This study systematically analyzed research trends in the field of electric vehicles and identified key research topics through LDA topic modeling, based on 36,519 papers related to electric vehicles collected from the SCIE database. The data analysis revealed a total of 10 major topics, of which three were identified as hot topics showing an upward trend: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure, Energy and Environmental Policy, and Optimization and Algorithms. Conversely, five topics were identified as cold topics exhibiting a downward trend: Battery Temperature and Cooling, Battery Materials and Chemistry, Motor and Mechanical Design, Control Strategies and Systems, and Battery Components and Materials. This study provides basic data for understanding the current research trends in electric vehicles and offers valuable information for researchers in selecting research topics related to electric vehicles.

  • In order to optimize the performance of a lithium-ion battery, a performance prediction modeling technique that considers various degradation factors is required. In this work, mathematical modeling was carried-out to predict the change in discharging behavior and cycle life, taking into account the cycle aging of lithium-ion batteries. In order to validate the modeling, a cycling test was performed at the charge/discharge rate of 0.25C, and discharging behavior was measured through RPT (Reference Performance Test) performed at 30 cycle intervals. The accuracy of cycle life prediction was improved by considering the break-in mechanism, one of the phenomena occurring in the BOL (beginning of life), in the model for predicting the cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. The predicted change in cycle life based on the model was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • One of the most important devices in an underwater vessel is a propulsion system. It should be a quiet and efficient system for stealthy operations in the large mission area. Hence lead-acid battery system has been used to supply the energy to electric motor. Recent technological developments and improvements, such as polymer electrolyte membrane(PEM) fuel cell and lithium polymer battery and have created the potential to improve overall power and propulsion performance. An underwater vessel always starts their mission with a limited energy and is not easy to refuel. Therefore design of energy elements, such as fuel cell and battery, and their load distribution are important to increase the maximum operating time of underwater vessel. In this paper, the lead-acid battery/PEM fuel cell and lithium polymer battery/PEM fuel cell were suggested as propulsion system and their performances were analyzed by modeling and simulation using Matlab/Simulink. Each model concentrated on representing the characteristics of energy element depending on demand current. As a result the effect of load distribution between battery and fuel cell was evaluated and the operation time of each propulsion system was able to be estimated exactly.

  • In this paper, the intelligent estimation algorithm is developed for residual quantity estimate of lithium secondary cell and we suggest the control algorithm to get battery SOC through thermal modeling of electric cell. Lithium secondary cell gives cycle life, charge characteristic, discharge characteristic, temperature characteristic, self-discharge characteristic and the capacity recovery rate etc. Therefore, we make an accurate estimate of the capacity of battery according to thermal modeling to know the capacity of electric cell that is decreased by various special quality of lithium secondary cell. And we show effectiveness through comparison of value as result that use simulation and fuzzy logic.

  • For the optimal design of the vehicle electric system, it is important to have a reliable modeling tool to predict the dynamic behavior of the automotive battery. In this work, a one-dimensional modeling was carried-out to predict the dynamic behaviors of a 12-V automotive lead-acid battery. The model accounted for electrochemical kinetics and ionic mass transfer in a battery cell. In order to validate the modeling, modeling results were compared with the experiment data of the dynamic behaviors of the lead-acid batteries of two different capacities that were mounted on the automobiles manufactured by Hyundai Motor Company. The discharge behaviors were measured with various discharge rates of C/3, C/5, C/10, C/20 and combination. And dynamic behaviors of charge and discharge were measured. The voltage curves from the experiment and simulation were in good agreement. Based on the modeling, the distributions of the electrical potentials of the solid and solution phases, and the current density within the electrodes could be predicted as a function of charge and discharge time.

  • As the application area of lithium secondary batteries becomes wider, performance characterization becomes difficult as well as diverse. To address this issue, battery manufacturers have to evaluate many batteries for a longer period, recruit many researchers and continuously introduce expensive equipment. Simulation techniques based on battery modeling are being introduced to solve such difficulties. Various lithium secondary battery modeling techniques have been reported so far and optimal techniques have been selected and utilized according to their purpose. In this review, the electrochemical modeling based on the Newman model is described in detail. Particularly, we will explain the physical meaning of each equation included in the model; the Butler-Volmer equation, which represents the rate of electrode reaction, the material and charge balance equations for each phase (solid and liquid), and the energy balance. Moreover, simple modeling processes and results based on COMSOL Multiphysics 5.3a will be provided and discussed.
