  • The post-LOCA long term cooling (LTC) performance of the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant (KSNPP) is analyzed for both small break loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA) and large break LOCA at cold leg. The RELAP5/MOD3.2.2 beta code is used to calculate the LTC sequences based on the LTC plan of the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plants (KSNPP). A standard input model is developed such that LOCA and the followed LTC sequence can be calculated in a single run for both small break LOCA and large break LOCA. A spectrum of small break LOCA ranging from \ulcorner.02 to 0.5 k2 of break area and a double-ended guillotine break are analyzed. Through the code calculations, the thermal-hydraulic behavior and the boron behavior are evaluated and the effect of the important action including the safety injection tank (SIT isolation and the simultaneous injection in LTC procedure is investigated. As a result, it is found that the sufficient margin is available in avoiding the boron precipitation in the core. It is also found that a further specific condition for the SIT isolation action need to be setup and it is recommended that the early initiation of the simultaneous injection be taken for larger break LTC sequences.

  • During faults, the voltage and current signals available to the relay are affected by the decaying dc component and harmonics. In order to make appropriate and accurate decisions, most of the relaying algorithms require the fundamental frequency phasor information that is immune to decaying dc effect and harmonics. The conventional Fourier ph as or estimation algorithm is affected by the presence of decaying-exponential transients in the fault signal. This paper presents a modified Fourier algorithm, which effectively eliminates the decaying dc component and the harmonics present in the fault signal. The decaying dc parameters are estimated by means of an out-of-band filtering technique. The decaying dc offset and harmonics are removed by means of a simple computational procedure that involves the design of two sets of Orthogonal digital OFT filters tuned at different frequencies and by creating three off-line look-up tables. The technique was tested for different decay rates of the decaying dc component. It was also compared with the conventional mimic plus the full cycle OFT algorithm. The results indicate that the proposed technique has a faster convergence to the desired value compared to the conventional mimic plus OFT algorithms over a wide range of decay rates. In all cases, the convergence to the desired value was achieved within one cycle of the power system frequency.

  • We propose a novel call admission control scheme which improves the handoff drop and the new call block probabilities of high priority services, minimizing the negative impact on low priority services, in multimedia service cellular networks. This paper proposes three schemes to solve this problem; the packing scheme in which available channels of a cell distributed to each frequency channel are concentrated on one frequency channel and a high transmission rate service is assigned to the frequency channel; the queuing scheme in which the queue is used for high transmission rate calls; and the power reallocation scheme in which the power assigned to calls under service is temporarily reduced and a high transmission rate service is allowed. The simulation results revealed that our scheme improved the drop and the block probabilities of the high priority services compared with the conventional scheme.

  • This paper presents the Hessenberg method, a new sparsity-based small signal stability analysis program for large interconnected power systems. The Hessenberg method as well as the Arnoldi method computes the partial eigen-solution of large systems. However, the Hessenberg method with pivoting is numerically very stable comparable to the Householder method and thus re-orthogonalization of the krylov vectors is not required. The fractional transformation with a complex shift is used to compute the modes around the shift point. If only the dominant electromechanical oscillation modes are of concern, the modes can be computed fast with the shift point determined by Fourier transforming the time simulation results for transient stability analysis, if available. The program has been successfully tested on the New England 10-machine 39-bus system and Korea Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) system in the year of 2000, which is comprised of 791-bus, 1575-branch, and 215-machines. The method is so efficient that CPU time for computing five eigenvalues of the KEPCO system is 3.4 sec by a PC with 400 MHz Pentium IIprocessor.

  • Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM) drives are widely used for industrial applications due to its high efficiency and high power factor control strategy. PMSM generally have two classifications such as the SPMSM(Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors) and IPMSM(Inter Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors). IPMSA has economical merits over SPMSM in higher speed range, mechanical robustness, and higher power rate by the geometric difference. The maximum torque operation in IPMSM is realized by the current angle control which is to utilize additional reluctance torque due to a rotor saliency. In traction, spindle and compressor drives, constant power operation with higher speed range are desirable. This is simply achieved in the DC motor drives by the reduction of the field current as the speed is increased. However, in the PMSM, direct control of the magnet flux is not available. The airgap flux can be weakened by the appropriate current angle control to demagnetize. In this paper, the control method of optimal current vector in IPMSM is described in order to obtain the maximum torque or maximum output with the speed and load variations. The applied algorithm is realized by the proto system with torque and speed control Experimental results show this approach is satisfied for the high performance servo applications. • Performance of a variable-speed, roller-type vane compressor was evaluated at low evaporating temperature. First, an experimental investigation was conducted to examine the performance variation as functions of both outdoor temperature and rotating speed. For this purpose, a typical heat pump was implemented as a test apparatus to measure mass flow rate and power input. Secondly, computational investigations corresponding to the heat pump test conditions were performed to predict compressor performance using ORNL Map-Based compressor model. Results obtained from the heat-pump experiments showed that both mass flow rate and power consumption were sensitively dependent on both evaporating temperature and compressor speed as was predicted from the computational results. From the comparisons of both experimental and computational results, it was well recognized that the ORNL model was subjected to larger error in the accuracy of prediction as outdoor temperature decreased. When the outdoor temperature was above $-5^{\cire}C$, errors of predicted values corresponding to both mass flow rate and power consumption were estimated as $\pm$10% and $\pm$ 15%, respectively. Finally, it is suggested that the ORNL model needs to be re-evaluated if compressor map data tested below $-5^{\cire}C$(in evaporating temperature) are available.

  • In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme for high-power user equipment (HPUE) in public safety communication environments. The use of HPUE is being considered to increase the throughput and communication range of a UE in the disaster area where normal communication links are not available. However, HPUE may cause higher interference to UE's in adjacent cells that are allocated to the same radio resources. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with the potential interference through frequency planning and resource allocation. The performance of the proposed resource allocation scheme is evaluated through simulations in 3GPP public safety communication scenarios.

  • Semiconductor diode lasers that can generate one watt or more of optical energy for tens of milliseconds (quasi continuous wave) are now readily available. Several researchers have demonstrated that this power level, when properly coupled, can reliably initiate pyrotechnic mixtures. This means that the initiator containing the pyrotechnic can be protected against inadvertent initiation from electromagnetic radiation or electrostatic discharge by a conducting Faraday cage surrounding the explosive. Only a small dielectric window penetrates the housing of the initiator, thereby eliminating the conductors necessitated by a bridgewire electroexplosive device. The diode laser itself, however, functions at a low voltage (typically 3 volts) and hence is susceptible to inadvertent function from power supply short circuits, electrostatic discharge or induced RF energy. The rocket motor arm-fire device de-scribed in this paper uses a diode laser, but protects it from unintentional function with a Radio Frequency Attenuating Coupler (RFAC).The RFAC, invented by ML Aviation, a UK company, transfers power into a Faraday cage via magnetic flux, thereby protecting the diode, its drive circuit and the pyrotechnic from all electromagnetic and electrostatic hazards. The first production application of a diode laser and RFAC device was by the Korean Agency for Defense Development.

  • Designing communication architecture for substation automation is a challenging and subtle task for visualizing substations in the digital world under the umbrella of IEC61850. Communication paradigms for substation automation are of critical importance because of two reasons; the communication arena is changing daily and opts for convenience and simple deployment at a lower migration cost and interoperability is one of the core constrains of IEC61850 for substation automation. This paper presents an analysis and outline of the crucial need for the deployment of Gigabit Ethernet in substations and also presents suggestions on how Ethernet technology can help in substation automation. Ethernet is one of the most pervasive communication technologies available and can provide a long term solution in the changing arena of communication. We have performed simulations in NS-2 to prove that our suggested communication paradigm is optimal in various regards with consideration of the constraints imposed by IEC61850.

  • The oxidizing power of ozone is the greatest of all commercially available oxidizers and thus ozone is taking the place of chlorine for water treatment. For energy-effective treatment of water, ozone should be generated in high concentration. A silent glow discharge ozonizer is high effective in industrial aspect and thus is the most widely used. We found that the key parameters associated with the ozone generation rate are the driving voltage of the discharger, the discharge rate and the temperature of the ozone generation tube. For an easy control of these parameters, we build a monitoring system with graphical user interface. This system is based on Windows-98 PC, programmed with C++ and LabView.
