  • We developed a visual inspection system for detecting defective products. Most existing inspection systems are designed to be dedicated to one product, which makes operator spend extra money and time to adopt other products. In this work, we propose a flexible visual inspection system that can inspect various products without any additional major job at a low-cost. The developed system contained image processing algorithm libraries and user-friendly graphic interface for adaptable image-based inspection system. We can find a proper threshold value using the proposed algorithm which uses correlation coefficient between a non-defective product and existing sample images of defective product. And We tested the performance of the proposed algorithm using Otsu's method. The proposed system is applied to a automated inspection line for cellular phone.

  • This paper presents an automated system for inspecting surface finish quality of gear teeth. The purpose of the presented system is to improve both efficiency and reliability of a gear inspection process with a lower cost. The system consists of two modules; one is for data collection and the other for data analysis. While and A/D converter is built in a PC to efficiently obtain digitized data, a window-based software for conducting quality tests is provided using VISUAL BASIC as well as C++. We successfully connect them with the existing gear tester. This system would be also useful for the gear quality improvement by means of a continuous data management.

  • The geometry of wheel and rail profiles is the primary contributor to wheel and rail interaction. These profiles interact to influence truck steering, vehicle lateral stability, wheel/rail wear and surface damage. Maintaining good control of the profiles is one of the keys to ensuring preferred wheel and rail interaction. Transportation Technology Center, Inc., Pueblo, Colorado, is developing an automated measurement system for wheel/rail contact condition inspections supported by AAR(Association of American Railroads). The system uses a modified version of $WRTOL^{TM}$ (Wheel/Rail Tolerances)--software that performs extensive analysis of wheel and rail contact conditions

  • In order to design a special illuminator required for an automated optical inspection system, distributions of illuminating angles and intensities of illuminating rays incident on a specimen surface are taken into consideration. This methodology is tried to optimize coaxial illuminating systems by using the specially-coded program.

  • A high speed automated pitch variation unit (HAPU) related to semiconductor category sorting movement of the test handler system was developed. In the design process, 'DMADOV' step of 6-Sigma method has been applied. The design result for the desirable pitch variation was a 3:1 reduction rack-pinion and a linkage which are operated by servomotors. The realization and reliability of the mechanism was obtained at the design stage by FEM analysis, and by robust design using Taguchi orthogonal array against weight and deformation. Finally, the validity of the high speed variation mechanism was confirmed via inspection using a high speed camera while performing pitch variation.

  • In order to replace the manual ultrasonic testing(UT) with an automated UT(AUT), a scanner which enables us to control the positions of a transducer is essential. Encoders have been commonly used to obtain the position information from the conventional scanners controlled by motor. Encoders have various advantages in many aspects. However, if the slip of motor wheel occurs during scanning, various errors are involved in the position accuracy. Thus, the position information of encoders becomes meaningless in case of slip. The reliability of AUT results nay become serious problem. Hence, slip must be avoided, but it can not be completely avoided at present time. In this paper, a new idea that surface wave is used to solve this problem and replace encoders has been proposed. It is shown that this idea can be employed in AUT scanner without encoders. That is, one transducer transmitting surface wave is fixed and the other transducer attached to the scanner receives UT signal. Then, computer calculates the present position of scanner based on the information given by surface wave. Thus, the movement of a scanner can be controlled by the amount of input based on the information obtained.

  • This paper proposes an approach to detect unintended deflections in an automotive outer panel. Conventionally, the detection of unintended deflections has been performed by experienced works, and it requires much amount of time and efforts. The motivation of this work is to reduce such efforts by providing an automated detection methodology. For the detection of unintended deflections, we make use of the measured data from an optical scanner which can be considered as a Z-map data. The proposed approach consists of four major steps; 1) measured data acquisition for an automotive outer panel, 2) identification of shape features, 3) removal of shape features, and 4) detection of unintended deflections via curvature analysis.

  • Since inspection, ID-code recognition, and pattern match processes requiring vision depend upon the high-grade human recognition capability, these processes have conventionally caused a bottle-neck in automatizing sewing system. However, the authors have recently developed the technology of inspecting the surface defects of textiles and recognizing ID-code by fully utilizing the image processing technology. In the ID-code recognition technology, the most difficult data given on patterns can be read as a result of developing the image processing technology and eliminating noises by using a special (fluorescent) ink. The inspection and pattern match technology was verified to be able to put into practical use through evaluation experiments in an experimental plant.

  • Gears are essential elements for mechanical power transmission. Geometric precision is the main factor for characterizing gear grade and qualify. Gear pitch is one of the crucial measurements, which is defined as a distance between two adjacent gear teeth. It is well-known that variability in gear pitches may causes wear-out and vibration noise. Therefore maintaining pitch errors at a low level plays a key role in assuring the gear quality to customers. This paper is concerned with a case study, which presents a computerized system for Inspecting pitch errors in a gear machining process. This system consists of a PC and window-based programs. Although the start and stop is manually accomplished, the process of measuring and analyzing pitch data is automatically conducted in this system. Our purpose lies in reducing inspection cost and time as well as Increasing test reliability. Its operation is briefly illustrated by example. Sometimes a strong autocorrelation is observed from pitch data. We also discuss a process monitoring scheme taking account of autocorrelations.
