  • A three-year longitudinal design was employed to ascertain whether different types of behavioral inhibition(i.e. traditional, peer-social) were stable from toddler to preschool age(2-4 year), and whether inhibited temperament and/or parenting style would independently and interactively predict children's subsequent social and behavioral outcomes. At time 1, 113 toddlers (55 males, 58 females) and their mothers were observed in the traditional inhibition paradigm. At time 2, 36 4-year-old children were observed with unfamiliar peers in the nontraditional inhibition paradigm. Maternal ratings of psychological functioning of children and maternal behaviors were also obtained for both time 1 and 2. Results showed that behavioral inhibition was not stable from toddler to preschool age. Maternal authoritative behaviors at age 2 were negatively associated with preschooler's social reticence. Toddler's behavioral inhibition was negatively associated with maternal authoritative behaviors at age 4. In a cross-lag correlation analysis, maternal authoritative behaviors appeared to affect child's behavioral inhibition more strongly than the other way around.

  • In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, unsubstantiated information concerning vaccines and the coronavirus has proliferated on various social media platforms. Consequently, we have considered viable actions to mitigate the impact of such unverified content, enabling individuals to use social media platforms more effectively and minimize any ensuing confusion. Recent measures in this area have included YouTube's practice of labeling vaccine or corona videos as authoritative when emanating from reputable organizations and Twitter's practice of flagging vaccine-related content as potentially misleading or taken out of context. This study seeks to explore how such contrasting labeling practices influence users' believability and engagement differentially, while also examining the moderating impact of regulatory focus. The results indicate that authoritative labeling positively influenced users' believability and engagement, whereas misleading labeling adversely affected users' believability and engagement. Additionally, our findings revealed that authoritative labeling has a stronger impact on promotion-focused individuals, while misleading labeling has a more pronounced effect on prevention-focused individuals. Our findings offer insights into how social media platforms can design and present information to their users, taking into account their regulatory focus.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of mothers' authoritative and authoritarian childrearing attitudes to their 5-year-old children's attachment representations and to teacher-rated social competence. The sample consisted of 69 mothers and their 5-year-old children from intact families. Children were interviewed to assess the quality of their attachment representations using Slough & Greenberg's(1990) version of the Separation Anxiety Test(SAT). Mothers were administered the Childrearing Practices Report Q-sort(Block, 1965) and filled out questionnaires regarding their childhood experiences, their marital relationship and their psychological well-being. In addition, teachers rated children's social competency in school settings using Kohn's(1972) Social Competence Scale. Hierarchical multiple regression showed that mothers' high scores on affective components of authoritative parenting and low scores on authoritarian attitudes are closely associated with children's secure attachment as well as teacher-rated social competence.

  • Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks towards name servers of the Domain Name System (DNS) have threaten to disrupt this critical service. This paper studies the vulnerability of the cache server to the flooding DNS query traffic. As the resolution service provided by cache server, the incoming DNS requests, even the massive attacking traffic, are maintained in the waiting queue. The sojourn of requests lasts until the corresponding responses are returned from the authoritative server or time out. The victim cache server is thus overloaded by the pounding traffic and thereafter goes down. The impact of such attacks is analyzed via the model of queuing process in both cache server and authoritative server. Some specific limits hold for this practical dual queuing process, such as the limited sojourn time in the queue of cache server and the independence of the two queuing processes. The analytical results are presented to evaluate the impact of DDoS attacks on cache server. Finally, numerical results are provided for further analysis.

  • This study examined relationships between parenting attitudes and young children's injury risk behavior by age and gender. Subjects were 161 3- to 5-year old children and their parents. Instruments were the revised Parenting Attitudes Questionnaire (Reitman et al., 2002) and the Injury Behavior Checklist (Speltz et al., 1990). Data were analyzed by MANOV A. Results were that: 1) Fathers were more permissive to daughters; mothers were more permissive to younger children. 2) Older children had more injury risk behaviors than younger children; boys engaged in more injury risk behaviors than girls. 3) Fathers' authoritarian and mothers' permissive attitudes were positively related to children's injury risk behavior, respectively. Fathers' and mothers' authoritative attitudes were negatively related to children's injury risk behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mother's warmth, control and toddler's attachment security. Subjects were 83 three-year old children and their mothers in Jeonju city. The intruments of this study were the Parenting Style Scale(Cho et at.,1999) and Attachment Q-set(AQS; Waters,1987). Mothers rated the questionnaire and observed a child through AQS at home. The results showed that the mean of the child attachment security was .39 and the range of attachment score was from -0.07 to 0.79. The scores of mothers' warmth and control were above the mean. The child's attachment security was predicted by mother's warmth. Mother's warmth appeared to be meaningful for child to develop the secure attachment. The result of this study suggested that authoritative parenting characterized with warmth and control was significantly associated with the child's attachment security.

  • This study investigates the relationships between parental efficacy and parental practices among Korean immigrant parents in the US. Parental efficacy constitutes a special aspect of parental belief systems focusing on the beliefs that parents have the capabilities to manage the tasks of nurturing and socializing their children. Results showed that parental efficacy was positively related to the authoritative dimension of parental practices. However, there was no significant negative relationship between parental efficacy and the authoritarian dimension of parental practices. Interestingly, the authoritative and authoritarian dimensions of parental practices were highly correlated among Korean immigrant parents. This finding is in contrast to much of the research on Anglo American parenting that indicates that authoritarian practices are not compatible with authoritative practices. For Korean immigrant parents, authoritarian practices seem not to have detrimental connotation. Therefore, it can be assumed that Korean immigrant parents parental practices have different underlying mechanisms compared to Anglo American parents. We need to focus parenting research with a broader perspective on the sociological and historical context from which parental practices arise.

  • Teachers' conceptions about teaching are important driving and also interfering forces which might affect their actual practice and training. This research explores preservice mathematics teachers' conceptions of teacher discourse, through tasks analyzing and evaluating teachers' moment-to-moment discourse moves which occur in authoritative and dialogical classroom discourse. Some facets of the preservice teachers' conceptions were congruent with dialogical discourse: they criticized teacher's one-way communication and ignoring students' voices; they supported teacher's questions probing students' thinking and receptive attitude to ward students' wrong answers. However, some deep and subtle facets of their conceptions were more congruent with authoritative discourse rather than dialogical discourse: they positively perceived teacher's closed, information seeking questions that funnel students' thinking to the predetermined procedure; they emotionally resisted teacher's questions which might facilitate dialogical engagement by allowing students to judge mathematical correctness of ideas from their peers. Preservice teachers' conceptions of teacher discourse explored in this research provide useful foundations on which to build continuous and coherent teacher professional development programs about classroom discourse.
