  • Atopic dermatitis is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense pruritus and the course marked by exacerbation and remission. It has the characteristic symptoms of dry, itchy, scaly skin with cracks by typical distribution of lesions. Even though the etiology of atopic dermatitis is not fully understood, it is considered an allergic reaction whose onset is frequently and strongly associated with both hereditary and environmental factors. In the present clinical study, we studied the efficacy of internal herb-medicine, external herb medicine - ex. dermal oints, aqueous solutions, etc -, and steam therapy. The patient's SCORAD index was lowered 55.8 than before of which the SCORAD index was 74.8. On the basis of this study, it should be considered that the treatment of atopic dermatitis should be focused on the external therapy as steam therapy, dermal oint, a aqueous solution etc.

Results: The SCORAD index total scores decreased (1.3908) after the program, especially itching scores (1.1) and sleep disorder scores (0.5693) significantly. The satisfaction with the program was 88% and 77% of parents and teachers groups, respectively. Making food and treatment were mentioned as the best program. The Children's food preference for junk food, irritability, and anger also decreased after the program. • Gagam-danguiemja (GDGJ), a traditional Korean prescription, has been used as therapeutics for atopic allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis. To evaluate the atopic allergic effect of modified GDGJ, we investigated a possible effect of GDGJ on mast cell-mediated allergic reaction, cytokinases secretion and mRNA expression in vivo and in vitro. Mast cells are a potent source of mediators that regulate the inflammatory response in allergic reaction. In mice orally administered by GDGJ (0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 g/kg) for 1 h, compound 48/80-induced ear oedema was significantly reduced. TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-8, and IL-6 secretion were inhibited by GDGJ in the human mast cell line (HNC-1). But TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-8, and IL-6 mRNA expression were not inhibited by GDGJ at the dose of 0.01 mg/ml. These findings may help in understanding the mechanism of action of this herbal medication, leading to the control of mast cells in atopic allergic reaction like AD.

Methods : We have classified the patients according to the shanghanlun six meridian patterns diagnostic system and the patients are treated with Chijabyukpi-tang. The severity of Atopic dermatitis was evaluated by SCORAD index, visual analouge scale(VAS) and pictures. Results : After the treatment, the SCORAD index of 2 patients decreased from 78 to 20.2 and from 67.4 to 38.2 respectively. Conclusions : Although Chijabyukpi-tang is unusual treatment for Atopic dermatitis, this case report showed the effectiveness of using Chijabyukpi-tang on Atopic dermatitis according to shanghanlun six meridian patterns diagnostic system.
