  • Many researches are actively doing for digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage using multimedia and virtual reality technologies. In addition, various attempts are progressed to utilize the digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage as "contents." Nowadays, the digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage can be displayed on through the Internet and/or many multimedia appliances by these attempts. Recently, virtual reality technology, especially augmented reality technology, begins to grab the attention for digitally implementing architectural heritage. Augmented reality is a technology that makes possible to show the overlapped contents by piling up the virtual objects on the real world. Many studies for augmented reality are progressed because it has an advantage in interacting with virtual objects and information. This study proposes the method of digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage by using augmented reality technology. We presented the method and process of digital implementation of traditional architectural heritage with augmented reality technology. Moreover, digitally implemented traditional architectural heritage with augmented reality is compared with the contents implemented by other computer technologies. We, also, presented how to utilize the traditional architectural heritage contents by using augmented reality.

  • In this paper, we propose ontology-based recommendation system for supporting maintenance of Korean architectural heritage. This study includes the following: 1) design of ontology expressing repair information of architectural heritage, 2) creation of repair case DB, 3) creation of a recommendation system of repair method. For this study, we designed the ontology that expresses the information of Korean wooden building cultural heritage by referring to the existing heritage ontologies. Second, we created the repair information database based on the repair contents and the expert interview data provided by the National Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Cultural Heritage Administration. Third, we developed a system that recommends the repair method of Korean wooden architectural heritage with the most similar phenomena and causes. This study contributes to sharing repair knowledge and determining repair methods for architectural heritage repair.

  • It seems obvious that the spatial information of existing architectural heritage will be re-structured utilizing BIM technology. In the future to be able to implement such task, a new system of classification of spatial information, which fit to the structural nature of architectural heritage is necessary. This paper intend to suggest the conceptual model that can be the base of establishing new classification system for architectural heritage. For this study we reviewed researches related to classification system of architectural heritage (CS-AH) and BIM based architectural heritage (BIM-AH), first. As a result, we found that CS-AH is focused on building elevation and type, and BIM-AH is biased on the Library and Parametric Modeling. Second, we figured out a relationship between the CS-AH and BIM-AH. From this analysis, we found that BIM-AH is biased on Library and Parametric since the building elevation and type was focused on CS-AH. This review suggests a potential of the 3D CS-AH to expand the range of research for BIM-AH. At last, we suggest the three concept of classification are: 1)horizontality-accumulation relationship, 2)structure-infill relationship, 3)segment-member relationship. These three concept, together as one system of classification, could provide useful framework of new classification system of spatial information for architectural heritage.

  • Currently, museums and architectural heritage provide augmented user experiences by incorporating various media technologies. They still, however, suffer from the limitation of entertainment-based and the provision of location-based simple and repetitive contents. In addition, while acting as a key medium of experience for architectural heritage, the concept of space is not properly reflected in current services. The purpose of this study is to design user space experience considering such characteristics of architectural heritage. The spatial experience content and content production platform are defined. This software platform creates content that enhances the experience of the place by giving a context-based digital data associated with space and objects. The spatial experience content is designed as a series of experience sequences. The composition of the sequence borrows the method of film and narrative which segment and connect consecutive experiences on a scene basis considering user's detailed spatial experience. Therefore, content components can be combined and reproduced in various types. Augmented contents were extracted by using rule-based reasoning function of ontology at the moment. As a practical example of architectural heritage, the Seokjojeon Hall is used to reveal a spatial experience scenario.

  • Traditional building technique has been used as the main technology in the field of architectural heritage conservation in South Korea. It has remained this way with very little resistance until now. But the time has come to question the appropriateness of traditional technique as conservation technique. In this paper a study was done on the properties of the traditional technique and the architectural heritage conservation technique in order to define the appropriateness between the two techniques. As a result the traditional technique was found to be unfit for conservation technique. The reasons are as follows. First, there is a time gap between the traditional technique and the time when the heritage was first built. Second, conservation work is about retaining the values of being a heritage while the traditional technique is about safeness and practicality. Third, the use of traditional technique comes with using the tools of its time which cannot ensure the safety of the heritage. The traditional technique must be looked upon as one of an option in the field of conservation. We must develop a better conservation technology by finding balance between the traditional technique and modern science. And further more an aggressive investment must be made in order to realize this objective.
