  • The containment retardation capacities of four different aquifers were evaluated in a preliminary study for development of bank filtration in the Young San river area. $NO_3-N$, $NO_2-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Fe, Mn, phenol, and chloride were selected as the target contaminants and a nonreactive tracer, respectively. Batch isotherm tests were conducted to measure the partition coefficients of the target contaminants. The mass transport parameters of nonreactive tracer were estimated from column tests. From the results of bath isotherm tests, it was shown that lower stream aquifer materials have greater partition coefficients of $NO_3-N$, $NH_4^+-N$, Mn, and phenol than the upper stream aquifer materials; however, there was no significant position-dependent trend for Fe. All aquifer materials tested have the same range of partition coefficients for $NO_2-N$. Column tests showed that the molecular diffusion of Cl- was much less than the mechanical dispersion; and there was no significant difference between the estimated dispersivities of tested aquifer materials. Consequently, it seems that the difference in the containment retardation capacities between four aquifers tested in this study would primarily result not from hydrodynamic dispersion but from partitioning.

  • Derivative analysis, based on the derivative of the drawdown as a function of time (i.e., rate of drawdown change), was applied to the evaluation of hydraulic parameters of the aquifer as an aid of the aquifer test interpretation based on the Theis solutions. Pumping tests were conducted at a coastal fractured aquifer in Muan county, Korea, of which the drawdown data, measured at the two observation wells, were used for derivative analysis. Wellbore storage and transition period were hard to identify at conventional log-log and semi long plots, but was easily recognized by distinctive curves of positive unit slope, hump and negative unit slope in the derivative plot. For the observation well of OW-2 at which wellbore storage and transition lasted over an hour, conventional aquifer analysis would suffer from the uniqueness problems and in further result in erroneous hydraulic parameters. Derivative analysis was found to be effective for distinguishing the drawdown data directly reflecting the aquifer property from those reflecting non aquifer effects such as wellbore storage and transition, which offers a unified methodology to yield correct hydraulic parameters from aquifer test data.

  • This study aims to investigate hydrogeological properties of the central area from Yangjeong-Dong to Sujeong-Dong in Busan Metropolitan City. For this study, pumping tests were carried out in the bedrock aquifer of Yangjeong-Dong and the unconsolidated aquifer near Busanjin railway station. The pumping test in the bedrock aquifer containing the Dongrae fault revealed specific hydraulic characteristics with respect to the fault. The pumping test in the unconsolidated aquifer revealed the hydrogeologic properties of both coastal landfill and fine sediments. It was found that the Moench's sphere-shaped dual-porosity model fits the bedrock aquifer, whereas the Neuman's uncofined aquifer model accords with the unconsolidated aquifer. The average transmissivity and storage coefficient of the bedrock aquifer are $2.75{\times}10^{-5}m^2/s\;and\;6.41{\times}10^{-5}$ and those of the unconsolidated aquifer are $8.24{\times}10^{-4}m^2/s\;and\;3.70{\times}10^{-3}$, respectively. On the other hand, slug tests gave average transmissivity and storage coefficient values of $9.84{\times}10^{-4}m^2/s\;and\;1.21{\times}10^{-2}$, respectively.

  • For tile hydrogeological data of the National Groundwater Monitoring Wells(NGMW), a statistical analysis is made to reveal aquifer characteristics of the country. Results of the pumping and recovery test are classified into 4~5 types by the pattern of drawdown and residual drawdown curves. The analysis of aquifer characteristics shows that the hydraulic conductivity of alluvial aquifers is greater than that of fractured-rock aquifers. The hydraulic conductivity of alluvial aquifers slightly increases as the distance to the discharge area decreases. 77.5% of the NGMWs, where the distance to the discharge area is more than 100m, shows the constant head boundary. This result suggests that the fractured and the alluvial aquifers are fairly interconnected, and water can be supplied from one aquifer to tile other where pumping tests are performed. It is analyzed that the wells showing the impermeable boundary are influenced by small scale of aquifers, poor aquifer transmissivities, and impermeable layers.

  • With the development of industry and standard of living, the quantity of groundwater consumption has been increasing. For the analysis of groundwater, to determine the hydraulic parameters of aquifer is very important. Various numerical methods have been developed to solve aquifer tests and eliminate the subjectivity of traditional graphical type curve methods. The slope-matching method, which matches the slope of the Theis type curve to the slope of the field data, can be used to numerically solve pump tests for both leaky and nonleaky aquifers. A FORTRAN program on based slope-matching method was developed to obtain the transmissivity, storage coefficient, and leaky factor from pumping test data automatically. Results derived from published data show that the improved slope-matching method gives parameters close to the ones derived by the slope-matching method.

  • To investigate the effect of aquifer disturbance on hydraulic properties while well drilling at unconsolidated aquifer, the following tests were conducted: the surge block and air-surging methods, which are well development methods used after well drilling; and step-drawdown tests and constant-rate pumping tests, which are used to assess changes in the aquifer after well drilling and development. The result of step-drawdown tests indicated that drawdown for a pumping-rate of $700m^3/day$ was 21.62 m after well development, decreasing 4.39 m from 26.01 m after well drilling. The skin factor used to identify the well properties decreased from 7.92 after well drilling to 5.04 after well development, respectively, which shows the improvement of well. Constant-rate pumping tests revealed a small increase in aquifer transmissivity after well development at MW-2, -3, and -4, centering around pumping well, from $1.684{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}4.490{\times}10^{-3}m^2/sec$ to $4.002{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}4.939{\times}10^{-3}m^2/sec$. MW-1, however, showed decline in hydraulic conductivity from $1.018{\times}10^{-2}m^2/sec$ to $6.988{\times}10^{-3}m^2/sec$, which was caused by a small decrease of aquifer permeability around monitoring well MW-1 due to latent factor of air interception and clogging in aquifer during surging. This finding indicates that fine particles have an effect on hydraulic properties at unconsolidated aquifers during well drilling; therefore, we consider that well drilling and development have an effect on hydraulic properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between pumping rates and influential factors in the tube wells for irrigation through the analysis of various statistical data of the existing tube wells for irrigation and pumping tests. Statistical data of the existing tube wells for irrigation were collected from the authorities concerned, and pumping tests were carried out for twelve tube wells. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The drilled tube wells are the most useful among various tube wells in securing pumping rates. 2. The enlargement of well diameter or the improvement of pumping equipments is necessary in drilled tube wells with pumping rates more than 806 ㎥/day, and the adjustment of foot valves or the special control of pumping equipments is necessary in tube wells with pumping rates less than 300 ㎥/day. 3. The choking of aquifer and slits can be prevented by removing earth and sand piled in tube wells. 4. The increase of well loss and the destruction of aquifer can be prevented by determining the optimum pumping rates through the step draw down tests. 5. The thickness of gravel packing is rather thin in drilled tube tube wells. 6. High pamping rates can be gained by deepening the depth of tube wells in the place the ground water storage is abundant, the thickness of aquifer is thick. and the depth of tube wells is deep. 7. Higher pumping rates can be obtained by constructing tube wells in the place where the drawdown is little and the coefficient of transmissibility is large.

  • This study was performed in order to hydrogeological analysis of aquifer, which is a necessary part for evaluating the efficiency of the combined well and open-closed loops geothermal (CWG) systems. CWG systems have been proposed for the effective utilization of geothermal energy by combining open loop geothermal systems and closed loop geothermal systems. Small aperture CWG systems and large aperture CWG systems were installed at a green house land with water curtain facilities in Chungju City. Aquifer tests include pumping tests and step-drawdown tests were conducted to analyse hydrogeological characteristics of aquifer in the study area. The transmissivity was estimated in the range of $13.49{\sim}58.99cm^2/sec$, and the storativity was estimated in the range of $1.13{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}5.20{\times}10^{-3}$. The geochemical analysis showed $Ca^{2+}$ ion and ${HCO_3}^-$ ion were dominant in groundwater. The Langelier Saturation Index and the Ryznar Stability Index showed low scaling potential of groundwater. In the analysis of vertical water temperature change, the geothermal gradient was estimated as $2.1^{\circ}C/100m$, which indicated the aquifer was enough for geothermal systems. In conclusion, groundwater is rich, can stably use geothermal heat, and it is less likely to cause deterioration of thermal energy efficiency by precipitation of carbonate minerals in study area. Therefore, the study area is suitable for installation of the combined geothermal system.

  • This study aimed to determine the extent of artificial aquifer recharge and to evaluate appropriate recharge techniques based on field investigations and comparative analysis of each recharge method. Characteristics of the aquifer determine the target aquifer and the recharge method for artificial groundwater recharge. Electrical conductivity surveys, drilling, permeability tests, and grain-size analysis indicate that the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil and weathered rock is higher than that of upper unconsolidated soil. Pumping tests indicate that the groundwater level was stable at a depth of 12 m until 9 hours of pumping, but after that it dropped again, indicating anisotropic aquifer characteristics. Three types of artificial recharge method were reviewed, including recharge wells, ditches, and ponds, and a combination of two methods is proposed: a recharge well system directly injecting into weathered soil and rock sections with good permeability, and an injection ditch that can increase the recharge effect by line-type injection in the upstream area. The extent of groundwater recharge by the selected methods will be evaluated through on-site tests and if their applicability is verified, they will contribute to securing water in areas of water shortage.

  • An aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) model is simulated by FEFLOW according to the scenario of heat pump operation in two layered confining aquifer. The scenario is consisted of 4 steps: 90 days pumping (west well) and waste water injection (east well: 35 $^{\circ}C$), 90 day s stop, 90days pumping (east well) and waste water injection (west well: 5 $^{\circ}C$), and 95 days stop. The injection of the waste water is limited in the second layer and the first layer is aquitard. The temperature distribution at the surface shows low difference with reference temperature and opposit aspect with that of the second layer because the thermal transition through the first layer is very slow. Even though the simulated thermal transition in the aquifer system have a difference with real ATES system, optimal design and operate system can be developed with field tests and operational experience.
