With the aim to reduce the atmospheric $CO_2$, utilization of the carbonated lime produced from the aqueous carbonation reaction for the synthesis of a cementitious material would be a promising approach. The present investigation deals with the aqueous carbonation of slaked lime, followed by hydrothermal synthesis of a cementitious material utilizing the carbonated lime, silica fume, and hydrated alumina. In this study, the aqueous carbonation reaction was performed under four different conditions. The TGA, FESEM, and XRD analysis of the carbonated product obtained from the four different reaction conditions was performed to evaluate the efficacy of the reaction conditions used for the production of the carbonated lime. Additionally, the performance of the cementitious material was verified analyzing the physical characteristics, mechanical property and setting time. Based on the results, it is demonstrated that the material produced by the hydrothermal method possesses the cementing ability. Additionally, it is revealed that the mortar prepared using the alternative cementitious material yields $33.8{\pm}1.3MPa$ compressive strength. Finally, a plausible reaction scheme has been proposed to explain the overall performances of the aqueous carbonation as well as the hydrothermal synthesis of the cementitious material.
It has been reported that aqueous indirect carbonation process of calcium silicate mineral could be one of the most promising methods for $CO_2$ sequestration. The process consists of two main steps, extraction of Ca from calcium silicate and carbonation of the extracted solution by $CO_2$. Many types of acids such as HCl and $HNO_3$ can be used in the extraction step of the process. In the case of using aqueous acetic acid solution as the extraction solvent, acetic acid can be reproduced at the carbonation step of the extracted solution by $CO_2$ and recycled to extraction step for reuse it. Industrial by-products such as iron and steel slags are potential raw materials of the indirect carbonation process due to their high contents of calcium silicate. In this study, in order to examine the extraction efficiency of domestic electric arc furnace steel slag by aqueous acetic acid solution, extraction experiments of the slag were performed by using the aqueous acetic acid solutions of varying extraction conditions ; acetic acid concentrations, extraction temperatures and times.
Waste cement generated from recycling processes of waste concrete is a potential raw material for mineral carbonation. For the $CO_2$ sequestration utilizing waste cement, this study was conducted to obtain basic information on the aqueous carbonation methods and the characteristics of carbonate mineral formation. Cement paste was made with W:C= 6:4 and stored for 28 days in water bath. Leaching tests using two additives (NaCl and $MgCl_2$) and two aqueous carbonation experiments (direct and indirect aqueous carbonation) were conducted. The maximum leaching of $Ca^{2+}$ ion was occurred at 1.0 M NaCl and 0.5 M $MgCl_2$ solution rather than higher tested concentration. The concentration of extracted $Ca^{2+}$ ion in $MgCl_2$ solution was more than 10 times greater than in NaCl solution. Portlandite ($Ca(OH)_2$) was completely changed to carbonate minerals in the fine cement paste (< 0.15 mm) within one hour and the carbonation of CSH (calcium silicate hydrate) was also progressed by direct aqueous carbonation method. The both additives, however, were not highly effective in direct aqueous carbonation method. 100% pure calcite minerals were formed by indirect carbonation method with NaCl and $MgCl_2$ additives. pH control using alkaline solution was important for the carbonation in the leaching solution produced from $MgCl_2$ additive and carbonation rate was slow due to the effect of $Mg^{2+}$ ions in solution. The type and crystallinity of calcium carbonate mineral were affected by aqueous carbonation method and additive type.

This research aimed to enhance the initial strength of concrete that is mixed with ground granulated blast furnace slag, as well as to fortify its resistance to carbonation and chloride ion permeation. To achieve this, alkaline aqueous, produced through the electrolysis of potassium carbonate, was employed as the mixing water in the preparation of concrete. To substantiate the increment in initial strength, compressive strength measurements of the concrete were executed. Additionally, an accelerated carbonation test and a chloride ion permeation resistance test were undertaken. The results confirmed that the initial strength of the concrete, which utilized electrolysis alkaline aqueous as mixing water, exhibited an improvement in comparison to concrete mixed with conventional water. It was also verified that both carbonation resistance and chloride ion permeation resistance showed enhancements.
The aqueous carbonation efficiencies of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and ladle slags at various pressures, temperatures, and liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios were investigated to determine optimum conditions. The maximum CO2 carbonated concentrations in slag (0.584 mmol/g for BOF slag and 1.038 mmol/g for ladle slag) was obtained at 10 bars, 40℃, and L/S = 5 mL/g-dry. The L/S ratio was the most critical parameter for carbonation. The effect of carbonated slag amendment on the immobilization of heavy metals in two field-contaminated soils was also investigated. The immobilization efficiencies evaluated by using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme (SM&T) were above 90% for both raw and carbonated slags for all soils. The TCLP-extractable heavy metals concentrations were below the criteria (5.0, 1.0 and 5.0 g/L for Pb, Cd, and Cr, respectively) after immobilizations with both slags except for Pb in soil B. The SM&T analysis showed the decrease in the exchangeable phase but the increase in residual phase after immobilization with raw and carbonated slags. The results of this study imply the promising potential of the carbonated slags on the immobilization of heavy metals in the field-contaminated soils.

In this paper, we have developed a simple, new and economical carbonation method to synthesize a pure form of aragonite needles using dolomite raw materials. The obtained aragonite Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) was characterized by XRD and SEM, for the measurement of morphology, particle size, and aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter of the particles). The synthesis of aragonite PCC involves two steps. At first, after calcinated dolomite fine powder was dissolved in water for hydration, the hydrated solution was mixed with aqueous solution of magnesium chloride at $80^{\circ}C$, and then $CO_2$ was bubbled into the suspension for 3 h to produce aragonite PCC. Finally, aragonite type precipitated calcium carbonate can be synthesized from natural dolomite via a simple carbonation process, yielding product with average particle size of $30-40{\mu}m$.

Cellulose carbonate was prepared by the reaction of cellulose pulp and $CO_2$ with treatment reagents, such as aqueous $Zncl_2$ (20-40 wt%) solution, acetone or ethyl acetate, at -5-$0^{\circ}C$ and 30-40 bar ($CO_2$) for 2 hr. Among the treatment reagents, ethyl acetate was the most effective. Cellulose carbonate was dissolved in 10% sodium hydroxide solution containing zinc oxide up to 3 wt% at -5-$0^{\circ}C$. Intrinsic viscosities of raw cellulose and cellulose carbonate were measured with an Ubbelohde viscometer using 0.5 M cupriethylenediamine hydroxide (cuen) as a solvent at $20^{\circ}C$ according to ASTM D1795 method. The molecular weight of cellulose was rarely changed by carbonation. Solubility of cellulose carbonate was tested by optical microscopic observation, UV absorbance and viscosity measurement. Phase diagram of cellulose carbonate was obtained by combining the results of solubility evaluation. Maximum concentration of cellulose carbonate for soluble zone was increased with increasing zinc oxide content. Cellulose carbonate solution in good soluble zone was transparent and showed the lowest absorbance and the highest viscosity. The cellulose carbonate and its solution were stable in refrigerator (-$5^{\circ}C$ and atmospheric pressure).
In order to better understand carbon dioxide recycling, the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of six different alkaline industrial by-products, including incineration ash, desulfurized gypsum, low-grade quicklime, and steelmaking slag were investigated using a laboratory-scale direct aqueous carbonation reactor. In addition to the dissolution characteristics of each sample, the main reaction structure was confirmed through thermogravimetric analysis before and after the reaction, and the reactive CaO content was also defined through thermogravimetric analysis. The carbon dioxide capture capacity and efficiency of quicklime were determined to be 473 g/kg and 86.9%, respectively, and desulfurized gypsum and incineration ash were also evaluated to be relatively high at 51.1 to 131.7 g/kg and 51.2 to 87.7%, respectively. On the other hand, the capture efficiency of steelmaking slag was found to be less than 10% due to the influence of the production and post-cooling conditions. Therefore, in order to apply the carbonation process to steelmaking slag, it is necessary to optimize the slag production conditions. Through this study, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide capture characteristics of incineration ash, quicklime, and desulfurized gypsum are at levels suitable for carbonation processes. Furthermore, this study was able to secure basic data for resource development technology that utilize carbon dioxide conversion to produce calcium carbonate for construction materials.
Mineral carbonation for the storage of carbon dioxide is a CCS option that provides an alternative for the more widely advocated method of geological storage in underground formation. Carbonation of magnesium- or calcium-based minerals, especially the carbonation of waste materials and industrial by-products is expanding, even though total amounts of the industrial waste are too small to substantially reduce the $CO_2$ emissions. The mineral carbonation was performed with steelmaking reduction slag as starting material. The steelmaking reduction slag dissolution experiments were conducted in the $H_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$ solution with concentration range of 0.3 to 1 M at $100^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal treatment was performed to the starting material via a modified direct aqueous carbonation process at the same leaching temperature. The initial pH of the solution was adjusted to 12 and $CO_2$ partial pressure was 1MPa for the carbonation. The carbonation rate after extracting $Ca^^{2+}$ under $NH_4NO_3$ was higher than that under $H_2SO_4$ and the carbonation rates in 1M $NH_4NO_3$ solution at $150^{\circ}C$ was dramatically enhanced about 93%. In this condition well-faceted rhombohedral calcite, and rod or flower-shaped aragonite were appeared together in products. As the concentration of $H_2SO_4$ increased, the formation of gypsum was predominant and the carbonation rate decreased sharply. Therefore it is considered that the selection of the leaching solution which does not affect the starting material is important in the carbonation reaction.

In this study, a liquid carbonation method was applied for producing precipitate calcium carbonate by liquid-liquid reaction. Also a shuttle mechanism of wet chemical absorption using MEA was utilized. The high concentration $CO_2$(A) and exhaust gas(B) was used for collecting carbon dioxide in the 30% MEA aqueous solution, and $CO_2$ was fixed with rate of 0.35 mg of $CO_2$ per mg of sludge through the liquid carbonation process. It was found from SEM data that calcium carbonate was mainly made up with spherical vaerite with the mixing of a small quantity of calcite.
