Finite element analyses of structures made of the fiber reinforced composites require an adequate method to characterize the high anisotropic behavior induced by one or several layers of fiber cords with different spatial orientation embedded in a rubber matrix. This paper newly proposes a continuum based rebar element considering change of the orientation of the fiber during deformation of the composite. The mechanical behavior of the embedded fiber is modeled using two-node bar elements in order to consider the relative deformation and spatial orientation of the embedded fiber. For improvement of the analysis accuracy, the load-displacement curve of fiber is applied to the stiffness matrix of fiber. A finite element program is constructed based on the total Lagrangian formulation considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Finite element analyses of the tensile test are carried out in order to evaluate the validity of the proposed method. Analysis results obtained with the proposed method provides realistic representation of the fiber reinforced rubber composite compared to results of other two models by the Halpin-Tsai equation and a rebar element in ABAQUS/Standard.
The purpose of this study was to develop a new element removal method for ESO (Evolutionary Structural Optimization), which is one of the topology optimization methods. ESO starts with the maximum allowable design space and the optimal topology emerges by a process of removal of lowly stressed elements. The element removal ratio of ESO is fixed throughout topology optimization at 1 or 2%. BESO (bidirectional ESO) starts with either the least number of elements connecting the loads to the supports, or an initial design domain that fits within the maximum allowable domain, and the optimal topology evolves by adding or subtracting elements. But the convergence rate of BESO is also very slow. In this paper, a new element removal method for ESO was developed for improvement of the convergence rate. Then it was applied to the same problems as those in papers published previously. From the results, it was verified that the convergence rate was significantly improved compared with ESO as well as BESO.
In two dimensional mechanical design analysis, quadrilateral element mesh is preferred because it provides more accurate result than triangular element mesh. However, automation of quadrilateral element mesh generation is much more complex because of its geometrical complexities. In this study, an automatic quadrilateral element mesh generation algorithm based on the boundary normal offsetting method and the boundary decomposition method is developed. In so doing, nodes are automatically placed using the boundary normal offsetting method and the decomposition method is applied to decompose the designed domain into a set of convex subdomains. The generated elements are improved by relocation of the existing nodes based on the four criteria - uniformity, aspect ratio, skewness and taper degree. The developed algorithm requires minimal user inputs such as boundary data and the distance between nodes.
An adaptive finite element method for analyzing two-dimensional and axisymmetric nonlinear elastic fracture mechanics problems with cracks is presented. The J-integral is used as a parameter to characterize the severity of stresses and deformation near crack tips. The domain integral technique, for which all relevant quantities are integrated over any arbitrary element areas around the crack tips, is utilized as the J-integral solution scheme with 9-node degenerated crack tip elements. The solution accuracy is further improved by incorporating an error estimation procedure onto a remeshing algorithm with a solution mapping scheme to resume the analysis at a particular load level after the adaptive remeshing technique has been applied. Several benchmark problems are analyzed to evaluate the efficiency of the combined domain integral technique and the adaptive finite element method.
This study is performed to understand three dimensional characteristics of weld residual stress for the surface weld on the stainless steel plate. AISI 304 plate with one path weld on the surface was used as a test specimen. Finite element analysis was done to analyze thermal transient and residual stress due to weld. The result of finite element analysis was validated by previous paper and measurement data. Among various techniques for residual stress measurement, instrumented ball indentation method was applied. The calculated residual stresses by finite element analysis showed good agreement with the measured results.
An edge finite element method is applied to calculate the field distribution of a coupled waveguide structure. We compares a node based finite element method with the edge element one. For 2-d eigenvalue problems of waveguide structures, the former generates spurious eigenmodes, but the latter dose not. Using an simple rectangular waveguide, we implement both methods to obtain some results of field computation in waveguide. The paper shows that the finite element method using edge elements succeeds in suppressing spurious solutions.
The mode I stress intensity factor ($K_I$) of a newly proposed slow-crack-growth-test (Notched Ring Test, NRT) specimen was found using finite-element method. The theoretical $K_I$ value of NRT was not available in any references and could not be solved analytically. At first, in order to verify the accuracy of the finite-element approach, published $K_I$ values of several cracks were calculated and compared with finite-element results. The results were in excellent agreement within inherent errors of theoretical $K_I$. Finally the $K_I$ of NRT was found using 2- and 3-dimensional finite-element methods and expressed as a function of the applied load.
In this study, finite element analysis for multi-stage deep drawing process of rectangular configuration with extreme aspect ratio is carried out especially for the blank design. The analysis of rectangular deep drawing process with extreme aspect ratio is likewise very difficult with respect to the design process parameters including the intermediate die profile. In order to solve the difficulties, numerical approach using finite element method is performed in the present analysis and design. A series of experiments for multi-stage rectangular deep drawing process are conducted and the deformed configuration is investigated by comparing with the results of the finite element analysis. Additionally, to minimize amount of removal material after trimming process, finite element simulation is applied for the blank modification. The analysis incorporates brick elements for a rigid-plastic finite element method with an explicit time integration scheme using LS-DYNA3D.
This paper is a study on the elasto-plastic analysis of reinforced concrete precast large panel connections by rigid element spring model. In the analysis of rigid element spring model, each collapsed part or piece of structures at limiting state of loading is assumed to behave like rigid bodies. The present author propose new elements for the improement and expansion of the rigid element spring model. In this study, it is proposed how the rigid element method can be applied to the elesto-plastic analysis of precat large panel connections. Some numerical results of analytical modeling and load displacement curves are shown.
This paper presents a Finite Element Method (FEM) application to thermal study of natural three layers of human dermal parts of varying properties. This paper carries out investigation of temperature distributions in these layers namely epidermis, dermis and under lying tissue layer. It is assumed that the outer skin is exposed to atmosphere and the loss of heat due to convection, radiation and evaporation of water have also been taken into account. The computations are carried out for one dimensional unsteady state case and the shape functions in dermal parts have been considered to be quadratic. A Finite Element scheme that uses the Crank-Nicolson method is used to solve the problem and the results computed have been exhibited graphically.
