  • A 2.45 GHz microwave plasma with linear antenna has been prepared for hydrophobic and wear-resistible surface coating of carbon steel. Wear-resistible properties are required for the surface protection of cutting tools and achieved by depositing a hydrogenated amorphous carbon film on steel surface through linear microwave plasma source that has $TE_{10}-TEM$ waveguide. Compared to the existing RF plasma source driven by 13.56 MHz, linear microwave plasma source can easily generate high density plasma and provide faster deposition rate and wider process windows. In this study, $Ar/CH_4$ gas mixtures are used for hydrogenated amorphous carbon film deposition. When microwave power of 1000 W is applied, 40 cm long uniform $Ar/CH_4$ plasma could be obtained in gas pressure of 200~400 mTorr. The Vickers hardness measurement of hydrogenated amorphous carbon film on steel surface was evaluated. It was found the optimized deposition condition at $Ar:CH_4=25:25$ sccm, 300 mTorr with microwave power of 1000W and RF bias power of 100W. By deposition of hydrogenated amorphous carbon film, contact angle on steel surfaces increases from $43.9^{\circ}$ to $93.2^{\circ}$.

  • All over the world more than 2,000 VORs(VHF Omni-directional Ranges) including 39 in Korea are being operated for formulating air routes. But VOR reveals some difficulties in cost and time when relocating already an installed one due to its poor performance from the interference by its geometrically surrounding obstacles. DVOR(Doppler VOR) which is more popular than CVOR(Conventional VOR) has huge antennas and make it very difficult to assume a sufficient number of proper site candidates for permanent installation. This paper develops an efficient method for predicting proper site of DVOR installation by isolating transmitter from sideband antennas and counterpoise, making the transmitter easily moveable and verifying the performance of DVOR only with a transmitter and an antenna. The method was tested with a real flight measurement for DVOR performance around Gwangju Airport in Korea.

  • Urban area is a representative environment of wireless channels in the mobile communication, building density has a different distribution depending on the location. Building density has affect to propagation prediction For this reason, building density is expected to affect to the channel characteristics, we need to analyze it. We measured channel characteristics in urban areas of Jeju island by channel sounder and $4{\times}4$ antenna. Channel characteristics considering the building density were derived based on the measured data in the urban area. In this paper, the measurement data is analyzed and channel characteristics are derived through MIMO Channel measurements at 700 MHz considering the building density in the urban area.

  • Measurement of deflections of certain bridges is usually hampered by corruption of the GPS signal by multipath associated with passing vehicles, resulting to unrealistically large apparent displacements. Field data from the Gorgopotamos train bridge in Greece and systematic experiments revealed that such bias is due to superimposition of two major effects, (i) changes in the geometry of satellites because of partial masking of certain satellites by the passing vehicles (this effect can be faced with solutions excluding satellites that get temporarily blocked by passing vehicles) and (ii) dynamic multipath caused from reflection of satellite signals on the passing trains, a high frequency multipath effect, different from the static multipath. Dynamic multipath seems to have rather irregular amplitude, depending on the geometry of measured satellites, but a typical pattern, mainly consisting of a baseline offset, wide base peaks correlating with the sequence of main reflective surfaces of the vehicles passing next to the antenna. In cases of limited corruption of GPS signal by dynamic multipath, corresponding to scale distortion of the short-period component of the GPS waveforms, we propose an algorithm which permits to reconstruct the waveform of bridge deflections using a weak fusion of GPS and RTS data, based on the complementary characteristics of the two instruments. By application of the proposed algorithm we managed to extract semi-static and dynamic displacements and oscillation frequencies of a historical railway bridge under train loading by using noisy GPS and RTS recordings. The combination of GPS and RTS is possible because these two sensors can be fully collocated and have complementary characteristics, with RTS and GPS focusing on the long- and short-period characteristics of the displacement, respectively.

  • In this paper, a program that can be utilized to measure and analyze radio propagation characteristics is developed. This program is able to control the measurement instruments including spectrum analyzer through GPIB interface and analyze the measured data to yield mean excess delay and RMS delay spread. The measured path loss can be compared with theoretical value in free space or inside a tunnel. The measured and analyzed results can also be presented in the forms of graphs. As these tasks can be conducted on the spot of the measurements, this program is very helpful in performing and verifying the measurements immediately. In this thesis radio propagation characteristics with frequency bands of 2.45 and 5.8GHz in subway tunnels are measured by using the program. Path loss and delay spread in subway tunnel is measured and compared according to the form of antenna beam and LOS(Line of Sight) and N-LOS(Non-Line of Sight).

  • In this paper, the cabinet shielding effectiveness (SE) including digital modules for nuclear power plants is analyzed depending on the internal structure and electromagnetic (EM) wave incidence angle. To analyze the SE, the cabinet and modules are modeled using the FEKO EM simulation tool. The SE is then obtained by comparing the electric field with and without the cabinet. In addition, the cabinet SE is observed by changing various conditions such as the spacing of each digital module, incidence angle, and the polarization of the EM wave at the 2.4 G[Hz frequency. To verify the results, the dipole antenna for SE measurements is fabricated, and the SE is measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. The result demonstrates that the SE by the cabinet structure can be expected to be higher when the polarization of the incident EM wave is horizontal to the ground and the distance between the digital modules is wide.

  • The radar operated to detect/track aircraft targets is divided into a search radar that operates while the antenna rotating device rotates for the purpose of detecting the target according to the mission characteristics, and a tracking radar that periodically steers and tracks a beam to the predicted position of the target. The tracking radar has a shorter target information acquisition preiod than the search radar. Due to this characteristic, the tracking accuracy is better than that of the search radar, but as the prediction error increases due to the speed error at the beginning of the tracking, there are many cases in which tracking fails at the beginning of tracking due to failure to perform beam steering normally. In this paper, in order to solve the above-mentioned problems, we propose an algorithm for improving the accuracy of track initiation using radial velocity measurements in addition to the position of the measured, and confirm the performance of the proposed algorithm by comparing with the two point differential algorithm

  • RADAR(Radio Detection and Ranging) is an important system for surveillance and reconnaissance by detecting a reflected signal which obtains the range from the radar to the target, and the velocity of the target. The magnitude of the reflected signal varies due to the radar cross section of the target, characteristic of the transmission and reception antenna, distance between the radar and the target, and power and wavelength of the transmitted signal. Thus, the RCS is the important characteristic of the target to determine if the target can be observed by the RADAR system. It is based on the material and shape of the target. We have measured the reflection signal of a simple square-shaped (20 × 20 cm) target made of a new material, a gallium-based liquid metal alloy and compared that of well-known metals including copper, aluminum. The magnitude of reflected signal of the aluminum target was the largest and it was 2.4 times larger than that of the liquid metal target. We also investigated the effect of the shape by measuring reflectance of the F-22 3D model(~1/95 ratio) target covered with/without copper, aluminium, and liquid metal. The largest magnitude of the reflected signal measured from side-view with the copper-covered F-22 model was 2.6 times greater than that of liquid metal. The reflectance study of the liquid metal would be helpful for liquid metal-based frequency selective surface or metamaterials.

  • Kilauea Volcano is one of the most active volcano in the world. In this study, we used the ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 satellite imagery to measure the surface deformation occurring near the summit of the Kilauea volcano from 2015 to 2017. In order to measure two-dimensional surface deformation, interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and multiple aperture SAR interferometry (MAI) methods were performed using two interferometric pairs. To improve the precision of 2D measurement, we compared root-mean-squared deviation (RMSD) of the difference of measurement value as we change the effective antenna length and normalized squint value, which are factors that can affect the measurement performance of the MAI method. Through the compare, the values of the factors, which can measure deformation most precisely, were selected. After select optimal values of the factors, the RMSD values of the difference of the MAI measurement were decreased from 4.07 cm to 2.05 cm. In each interferograms, the maximum deformation in line-of-sight direction is -28.6 cm and -27.3 cm, respectively, and the maximum deformation in the along-track direction is 20.2 cm and 20.8 cm, in the opposite direction is -24.9 cm and -24.3 cm, respectively. After stacking the two interferograms, two-dimensional surface deformation mapping was performed, and a maximum surface deformation of approximately 30.4 cm was measured in the northwest direction. In addition, large deformation of more than 20 cm were measured in all directions. The measurement results show that the risk of eruption activity is increasing in Kilauea Volcano. The measurements of the surface deformation of Kilauea volcano from 2015 to 2017 are expected to be helpful for the study of the eruption activity of Kilauea volcano in the future.
