  • The IMO has established a regulation for the ECDIS installation on ships based on the IHO S-57 standards. The ECDIS supports sailors in achieving a safe voyage by using ENCs and monitoring the information of their ship. However, the S-57 standards were developed as edition 3.1 and prohibited revision for more than 20 years. So, the IHO developed a new standard as S-100 into the hydrography and maritime field instead of updating the S-57 to edition 4.0. In this study, the new S-100 ECDIS was developed and verified with ENCs and the digital maritime safety information by using a ship steering simulator and by conducting an on-board sea-trial test. It evaluated the impact on ship operations if the next-generation navigation support system is introduced. Based on this research, the S-100 ECDIS will generate improvements such as safe voyages by providing various of real-time safety information and up-to-date data to ship and sailors.

  • Objective : Despite the recent progress that has been made in intracerebral monitoring, it is still difficult to quantify the exact extent of primary brain damage after severe head injury. In this work, we investigate the role of S-100B protein as a serum marker of brain damage after severe head injury. Methods : 21 patients with severe head injury [GCS score <9] were selected for this prospective study. A venous blood sample was taken as soon as possible after head injury and the serum concentration of S-100B protein was measured daily for five consecutive days. The serum level of S-100B protein was compared with the patients' outcome. The outcome was measured twice, at hospital discharge and after 6 months of follow-up using the Glasgow Outcome Scale[GOS]. Results : Those patients who died within two weeks [after head injury] had a significantly higher serum S-100B value than those who survived [median, 9.64ug/L versus 2.91ug/L]. Seven [78%] of the nine patients who died had a maximum S-100B value of 2ug/L or higher, while three [25%] of the twelve surviving patients showed a maximum S-100B protein value of more than 2ug/L [P<005]. Conclusion : These results indicate that S-100B protein appears to be the most reliable index for estimating the extent of brain damage.

  • Chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL) is a myeloproliferative disease with an increased number of mature eosinophils and their precursors, which results in infiltration into organs and organ enlargement. The main cause of this disease is the overexpression of tyrosine kinase. However, there is a need for alternative medication, because some patients are resistant to imatinib, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor for leukemia. Many studies have indicated that S100A8 and splicing factor proline and glutamine-rich (SFPQ) function as initiation signals of apoptosis in CEL cells. We reviewed structural studies on CEL cells related to S100A8 and SFPQ. Particularly, this review highlighted microscopic results for the study of S100A8 and SFPQ in CEL cells.

  • The object of this study is to investigate the toxicity of S-biol (d-allethron-d-transchrysanthemate) and the mode of action between other synthetic pyrethroid insecticides and S-biol in rats. Rats were treated daily with S-biol (25 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 100mg/kg) by oral administration for 5 weeks. The experimental results were summerized as follows: Biochemical parameters such as LDH and Glucose in serum were much more increased in control groups. No significant hematological change excepts for MCHC in rats treated with S-biol 100 mg/kg were observed in all groups compared to control groups. In animals treated with S-biol for 4∼5 weeks, the levels of cytochrome P-450 in the liver were significantly increased. In renal microsomal fractions, however, no significant changes of cytochrome P-450 contents were observed. The activitis of ATPase in groups treated with S-biol (50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg) were decreased compared to those in other groups. TBA values and activities of glucose-6-phosphatase in the liver were increased a little in the groups treated with S-biol (100 mg/kg) for 5 weeks. The activities of cholinesterase in hepatic and serum were not significantly changed in all groups but slightly decreased in animals treated with high dose of S-biol (100 mg/kg). The activities of carboxylesterase in serum and in the liver were slightly increased but not significantly changed.

  • The electronic and adsorption structure of o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) on the H-Si(100) surface was investigated by using Near Edge X-ray Fine Structure (NEXAFS) and high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We confirmed that the OPA grown on the H-Si(100) surface showed good dependency with about 60 degree tilting angle using NEXAFS and a single O 1s peak by using HRPES. Hydrogen atom passivated on the Si(100) surface was found to be a seed for making one dimensional organic line that uses a chain reaction as the H-Si(100) surface was compared with the hydrogen free Si(100) surface.

  • The electronic structures and bonding configuration of histidine on Ge(100) have been investigated with various sample treatments using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES). Interpretation of the Ge 3d, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core level spectra being included in these systems revealed that both the imino nitrogen in the imidazole ring and the carboxyl group in the glycine moiety concurrently participate in the adsorption of histidine on a Ge(100) surface at 380 K. Moreover, we could clearly confirm that the imino nitrogen with a free lone pair in the imidazole group adsorbs on Ge(100) more strongly than the carboxyl group in the glycine moiety by examining systems annealed at various temperatures.
