  • In this paper, we propose an electrically tilting system based on a null-steering in order to solve the problem of the shadowing loss caused by the mechanically tilted antenna system in mobile services. Especially, we improve the downward shadowing loss by eliminating or moving the vertical beampattern nulls between $-30^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}$ to be able to tilt the downward beampattern between $-10^{\circ}{\sim}0^{\circ}$. The antenna has 14.5 dBi gain and side lobe level (SLL) is lower than -18 dB within downward tilting range. The isolation of polarization is greater than 30 dB when running in electric tilt down to $-10^{\circ}$. To verify this paper, we made the base-station antenna for W-CDMA and beam tilting devices, and verified the performances.

  • PURPOSE. This study compared the SCGAs measured in three types of radiographic images (panoramic, CBCT panoramic-section, and CBCT cross-section images) with values measured using the protrusive occlusal record. MATERIALS AND METHODS. SCGAs were measured in 20 patients on a semi-adjustable articulator using the protrusive interocclusal record. Panoramic and CBCT images were obtained. SCGAs were measured on CBCT images in panoramic and cross sections. In all of the radiographic images, SCGAs were measured using the Frankfort horizontal reference line and the mean curvature line. The most-superior and most-inferior points of the curvatures were identified to determine the mean curvature line. Each measurement was performed twice by two operators independently. The data were analyzed by the t-test, Pearson's correlation test, and Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ using SPSS (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. The mean right and left SCGAs were as follows: protrusive occlusal record (30.1 and 30.2 degrees, respectively), panoramic (38.9 and 38.7 degrees), CBCT panoramic sections (35.4 and 36.8 degrees), and CBCT cross sections (35.3 and 36.1 degrees). The SCGAs differed significantly among the groups. The Pearson coefficients for the correlations with the protrusive occlusal record measurements on the left and right sides were as follows: panoramic (0.834 and 0.791, respectively), CBCT panoramic-section (0.918 and 0.837), and CBCT cross-section (0.918 and 0.845) images. CONCLUSION. Strong correlations were found between SCGAs obtained using radiographic images and the protrusive occlusal record.

  • In this study, a restoring viscous damper is introduced for X-type damper system which is designed for the seismic response control of large spatial structures. A nonlinear numerical model for its behavior is developed using the result of dynamic loading tests. The X-type damper system is composed of restoring viscous dampers and connecting devices such as adjustable wire bracing, where the damping capacity of the system is controllable by changing the number of the dampers. The restoring viscous damper is devised to exert main damping force in tension direction, which is effective to prevent the buckling of bracing subjected to compressive axial force. To evaluate the performance of the proposed damper, dynamic cyclic loading tests are performed by using manufactured dampers at full scale. In order to construct the numerical model of the damper system, its model parameters are first identified using a nonlinear curve fitting method with the test data. The numerical simulations are then performed to validate the accuracy of the numerical model in comparison with the experimental test results. It is expected that the proposed system is effectively applicable to various building structures for seismic performance enhancement.

  • The degeneration of two classes of thick beam elements has been conducted, one (DB6) based on the conventional Timoshenko beam assumptions whereas the other (DB7) based on the assumed cubic axial displacement profile. While an adjustable shear correction factor is required for the DB 6 element to compensate for the unrealistic distribution of shear strain across the thickness, the DB 7 element assumes the more realistic quadratic profile of shear strain at the outset. With the plane-stress continuum solution as reference, solutions obtained by these two element models are compared with the analytical Timoshenko solution, the analytical thin beam solution and several available solutions of other existing beam elements. The result indicates that the performance of the higher order beam element DB 7 is consistently superior to any others. This is true for the whole range of aspect ratios of beam, in both static and free vibration analyses.

  • Solar towers, which often has a large aspect ratio and low fundamental natural frequency, were extremely prone to large amplitude of wind-induced vibrations, especially Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV). A tiny Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) with conveniently adjustable eddy current damping was specially designed and manufactured for elastic wind tunnel tests of a solar tower. A series of numerical simulations by using the COMSOL software were conducted to determine three key parameters, including the thickness of the back iron plate and the conductive plate (Tb and Tc), the distance between the magnet and the conductive plate (Td). Based on the results of numerical simulations, a tiny TMD was manufactured and its structural parameters were experimentally identified. The optimized values of the tiny TMD can be conveniently realized. The tiny TMD was installed at the top of the elastic test model of a 243-meter-high solar tower, and a series of wind tunnel tests were carried out to examine the effectiveness of the TMD in suppressing wind-induced responses of the test model. The results showed that the wind-induced responses could be obviously reduced by the TMD, especially in the cross-wind direction. The cross-wind RMS and peak responses at the critical wind velocity can be reduced by about 86% and 75%, respectively. However, the maximum reduction of the responses at the design wind velocity is about 45%, obviously less than that at the critical wind velocity.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of cable logging systems, of which skyline length is adjustable during operation are discussed from a standpoint of system geometry. Among the cable logging systems, the live skyline is the typical one, of which operation is easy to understand. To analyze the cable logging mechanics of the live skyline, computer models were developed. In developing the computer models, the concept of the live skyline operation was classified into 'true live skyline' and 'live skyline with lift'. The former assumes to adjust skyline length continuously to maintain the skyline clearance over ground constant during inhaul ; the latter assumes to shorten the skyline length only to keep the minimum skyline clearance during inhaul. The computer model was used in investigating the mechanical efficiency and the operational characteristics of the live skyline system. First, the payload capability of live skyline was compared with that of standing skyline. Second, the effect of the change in the log-drag geometry on the payload capability of live skyline was investigated. Finally, the payload capability of live skyline with lift was compared with that of true live skyline as an effort to explain the concepts of true live skyline and live skyline with lift.

  • Viscosity data were measured at 298.15 K and 308.15 K for formamide + 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1-butanol, 2-methyl-1-propanol or 2-methyl-2-propanol mixtures. For an equimolar mixture, deviation in viscosity follows the sequence: 2-methyl-2-propanol >2-methyl-1-propanol>1-butanol>2-propanol>1-propanol. The viscosity data were further analyzed in terms of graph theory. Free energy of activation was also calculated from experimental viscosity data along with previously reported excess volume data. The deviation in viscosity and free energy of activation were fitted to Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The viscosity data were also correlated by correlations like Grunberg-Nissan, Tamura-Kurata, HindMcLaughlin-Ubbelohde, and Katti-Chaudhari relation. Various adjustable parameters, $G_{12}$, $T_{12}$, $H_{12}$, and $W_{vis}/RT$, of various correlations were used to predict viscosity deviation of binary mixtures. Positive value of $G_{12}$ indicates strong interaction in the studied systems. Grunberg-Nissan relation has lowest deviation among the four correlations for formamide + 1-propanol or 2-propanol mixtures; and for mixtures of formamide with 1-butanol or 2-methyl-1-propanol, TamuraKurata has lowest deviation. Grunberg-Nissan gives lowest deviation for formamide + 2-methyl-2-propanol mixtures.

  • The staining tendency of esthetic restorative material was very important factor for the people who are great concern about the esthetics. Most external stains were superficial and adjustable by routine prophylactic procedure. But some of these stains were remained under superficial stain. Some of these stains were accumulative on external tooth surface and it's removal alter the anatomic contour of restoration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the staining tendency of esthetic restorative materials to staining solution. In this study two glass-ionomer cements (Fuji II Glass-Ionomer Cement and Fuji II LC Glass-Ionomer Cement) and three composite resins (Sil$\ddot{u}$x Plus, APH and P-50) were evaluated and compared. Total 8 disc-shaped specimens of each material (17mm diameter, Imm thick) were immersed in coffee staining solution. These specimens were divided into one control and 3 experimental groups according to the immersion period as follows : Control: immersed in distilled water during each testing period Group 1 : immersed in staining solution for 6 hours Group 2 : immersed in staining solution for 24 hours Group 3 : immersed in staining solution for 72 hours Staining tendency was evaluated by total color difference(${\Delta}E^*$) of specimen before and after staining by spectorcolorimeteric readings (ColorQUEST Spectrophotometer, U.SA.). The results were as follows : 1. The total color differences of each testing materials were increased with time. 2. Among the experimental groups, the Fuji II Glass Ionomer Cement showed the highest total color difference(6.803) and the Silux Plus showed the lowest total color difference(1.637). 3. In comparison of glass ionomer cements, the total color difference of chemical cured glass ionomer cements(6.803) were higher than light cured glass ionomer cements(3.891) (P<0.01). 4. In comparison of composite resins, the P-50 showed the highest total color difference and the Silux Plus showed the lowest total color difference, but there was not significant difference among composite resins(P>0.05).

  • Purpose: To present a flexible and accurate autonomous solution for creating any desired row spacing value between the hydroponic gullies in multilayer growing units, and evaluate the capabilities and performance of the relevant automated system through the use of virtual prototyping technique. Methods: To build the virtual prototype of the system, CAD models of its different parts, including an autonomous vehicle and the mechanical mechanisms embedded in the multilayer growing unit, were developed and imported into the RecurDyn simulation software. In order to implement the automated row spacing operation, three spacing modes with different loading cycles and working steps were defined, and the operation of the system was simulated to obtain the target row spacing values specified for each of these modes. Results: Motion profiles related to the horizontal displacement of: 1) the lower and upper sliding bars installed in the cultivation layers, and 2) the hydroponic gullies, during the simulation of the system operation, were generated and analyzed. No deviation from the specified target spacing values was observed at the end of simulations for all spacing modes. Conclusions: The results of the motion analysis obtained by simulating the system operation confirm the effectiveness of the control scheme proposed for automated row spacing of gullies. It was also found that proper sequencing of the loading cycles and the precision of the working strokes of the upper bars are the critical factors for establishing a certain row spacing value. Based on the simulation results, precise control of the back and forth motions of the upper bars is highly necessary for sound operation of the real system.

  • Recently, there is a new issue, among the contemporary people, for new life style, such as green design and well being. This trend brought up the necessity that there should be alternatives for interior spatial design. In order to catch up with these new issues, the new convenient and environment friendly methods are in need. Space composition using setting-up is skill that can express both the structural aspect and esthetic because it represents traditional beauty into the contemporary age through the structural rigidity and formal beauty. Also the lumber, as main materials for setting up, is in line with well being life style and environment friendliness. The construction of structure by setting-up has advantages in terms of the reuse and the convenience in that the construction of structure is adjustable according to environment. And setting-up has enough plasticity not only because of its own role as linking the objects but also because of being framed by itself. Therefore setting-up will be a design element, if it is expressed outward. Thus, this study aims to give a guide line about how to apply the result from the evaluating that "what is the most suitable setting-up" and "what is the most suitable detail setting-up", based on that structural rigidity, decorativeness and the ease of works. As a result of evaluation, the most excellent types of setting-up in terms of structural rigidity are "Jangbu" and "Panjae" and "Yeongui". The most excellent types of setting-up in terms of decorativeness are "Panjae" and "Yeongui", and the most excellent type of the ease of work is "Mat". And also the most applicable detail setting-up for the utilization of spatial composition is proposed.
