Evaluation of Subjective Fabric Hand: Comparing Bipolar Adjectives with Unipolar Adjectives (의류소재의 태 평가에 사용되는 대립어 척도와 부정어 척도 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a scale for the evaluation of the subjective fabric hand. In order to find out the appropriate method for the evaluation, bipolar adjectives were compared to unipolar adjectives. One hundred female university students we.e selected as judges. They assessed 9 fabrics using the 9 point scale system for both bipolar and unipolar adjectives. When using the bipola. scale, judges responded more consistently showing smaller deviation among their responses. The Judges seemed to understand the meanings of adjectives in the bipolar scale more clearly than in the unipolar scale. Unipolar scale has twice the number of questions than bipolar scale does. Therefore. judges often felt bored responding to the questions using unipolar adjectives. If the appropriate antonym can be found through verified method, bipolar scale seems to have more advantages than unipolar scale.

A Study on the Landscape Adjectives for Urban Landscape Analysis (도시경관분석을 위한 경관형용사 목록 작성)

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize a landscape adjective list for urban landscape analysis. For this purpose, four methods are used. The first method is to survey the foreign landscape adjective lists such as Feimer's EACL & LACL, VRM suggested vocabulary, and IEA and LI's aesthetic factors, which are commonly used in domestic research. The second method is to analyze vocabulary in Korean linguistic textbook the third is to investigate Korean adjective lists from 36 domestic research. The last is to survey adjectives used to express the urban landscapes. 24 landscapes from BunDdang, GwaCheon, YakSoo and ApGuJeong were presented to 40 subjects, whose responses were collected and categorized. The frequency analysis of the adjectives and landscape factors were processed by SJTOOL, which was programmed for Korean vocabulary analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Foreign adjective lists were mainly focused on the physical features of landscapes and they also had linguistic problems caused by the translations. Therefore, it is undesirable to use the foreign adjective list directly to analyze Korean urban landscapes. The vocabulary from the linguistic textbook has more variety, but it includes many adjectives irrelevant to the urban landscape. More types of adjectives were used in the researches(890 adjectives/295 types), compared with the result of response survey(1,406 adjectives/270 types). Because some adjectives were partly confusing, it is desirable to categorize the adjectives. The categorized adjectives could therefore be more useful and practical for urban landscape analysis.

Analysis of Taste Adjectives of Traditional Cooked Rice, Noodles, Porridge and Rice Cakes by Sensory Evaluation (관능평가에 의한 전통 밥류, 죽류, 면류 및 떡류의 미각 형용사 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the taste adjectives of Korean cooked rice, noodles, porridges and rice cakes as well as to analyze the relation between the taste adjectives of foods. We gathered and chose 36 related Korean adjectives for expressing not only the taste but also the smell of foods. Subsequently, we performed a sensory evaluation for 18 Korean foods with 20 trained panelists in order to check the proper adjectives when they tasted the foods. The often selected taste adjectives were 'sweet', 'tasty', 'sticky' and 'soft' among 36 taste adjectives. The PCA was performed to summarize the taste adjectives for each of the 18 foods. The principal components explained 50.94 % of the total variance. The adjectives 'spicy' and 'refresh' were closely related to one another in the positive direction of PC1. In contrast, 'weak', 'hard' and 'sticky' were closely related to one another in the negative direction of PC1. PC2 was marked by 'hard' and 'spicy', which were located in the positive direction. In contrast, 'weak' and 'soft' were located in the negative direction. PC3 was marked by 'nutness', 'bitter' and 'spicy', which are associated with bibimbab, conveying a high degree of correlation among them in a positive direction. In contrast, 'cool', 'sour' and 'refresh' were located in the negative direction.

IDENTIFYING EMOTIONAL ELEMENTS OF APARTMENT NOISE (공동주택 소음에 대한 감성 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to extract emotional dimensions from Korean adjectives relating to apartment noise. Noise-related 296 Korean adjectives were extracted from a dictionary and three evaluators selected 96 adjectives from those by removing very similar ones in meaning. Two types of 96 7-point scales were conducted to college students for evaluation, whether each adjective describes apartment noise appropriately. From this evaluation, 28 adjectives having above 4.5 points were selected. Again, 8 different types of 7-point scales on 378 adjective pairs(28 x 27/2) were administrated to separate college students to evaluate the degree of similarity between 28 adjectives. Based upon this evaluation, 14 adjectives were finally selected and scores on similarity sere analyzed through two different statistical analyses (Multi-dimensional scale and Cluster analysis). The results showed that three dimensions (displeasure, sensitivity and perceived loudness) exist in peoples' emotional response state to apartment noise. The previous studies have treated annoyance and sensitivity as separate measures to noise. However, this study showed that these two factors were on the same emotional dimension labeled as 'sensitivity' In addition, new dimension, labeled as 'displeasure', was found.

A Study on Character Adjectives in Korean that Have Symbolic Words as Roots (상징어 어근으로 형성된 한국어 성격 형용사 연구)

  • This study aims to observe the features of Korean adjectives composed with symbolic base impling human character. Korean adjectives composed with symbolic base shows more delicate nuances than ordinary adjectives. For observing the feature of them we analyzed the 6000 symbolic words in 'Stanadard Korean Dictionary'. As a result,the symbolic base of adjectives is divided into the one that maintain the basic meaning of symbolic words and the other that do not maintain basic meaning of symbolic words. The base that maintain the basic meaning of symbolic words is divided into the one that has meaning of character and the other that do not has meaning of character. The base that do not maintain the basic meaning of symbolic words is divided into the one that can relate with '-hada' and the other that cannot relates with '-hada'. This study remains the problem in future to examine common points of symbolic base.

Fuzzy Relation-Based Analysis of Korean Foods and Adjectives for Taste Evaluation (퍼지관계에 기반한 한국 음식과 맛 평가 형용사 분석)

  • In this paper we analyze the Korean foods and sensory adjectives that can be used for the taste expression of corresponding food based on the fuzzy relation. In order to construct fuzzy relation we gathered and chose 87 related Korean adjectives for expressing not only taste but also smell from foods. After then we performed a sensory evaluation for 51 Korean foods with 20 subjects to check the proper adjectives when they take a food. Based on the data collected by the evaluation a fuzzy relation is constructed and used for the analysis of the properties of food and adjectives. In addition the composition of the fuzzy relation provides the fuzzy tolerance(compatibility) relation among foods as well as that among adjectives. From the fuzzy complete ${\alpha}$-cover of the relations we could explore the taxonomy of food or adjectives. We expect that the fuzzy relation-based scheme in the paper can be utilized for analysis of the sensory adjectives like smelling and tactile sensation.

A Study on the Landscape adjective characteristics for the Major Landscape Elements in Organic farming (유기농업단지 주요경관요소의 경관형용사 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Up to date, the majority research on the major landscape elements in organic farming has been mainly focused on the practice of seeking efficiency. The problem is that this type of study contributes to polluting the agricultural environment and damaging the ecological circulation system. As an alternative, there is a growing body of research on organic farming, but it is not widely applied that research on how to manage the landscape considering the scenic characteristics of farming villages practicing organic farming. Hence, in this paper we utilized landscape adjectives as a way to enhance the objectivity of the organic agricultural complex landscape assessment. More specifically, not only this study used a landscape image of an organic agricultural complex to identify a landscape adjective suitable for the landscape elements but also this study confirmed the suitability of landscape adjectives comparing to the opinions of experts and the public. To carry out, this study performed the experts survey which is composed of 12 major landscape elements, including rice paddies and fields, monoculture and diverse crops, dirt roads, windbreak trees, accent planting, dum-bung(small pond), natural small river, natural waterways, plastic film houses, one-storied houses, and pavilion. As a result of deriving the landscape adjectives from the main landscape elements, there were nine landscape adjectives that were consistent with experts and the public, including "clear" and "Artless" for rice paddies and fields, while the mismatched landscape adjectives were 'traditional'. The accent planting was a combination of landscape adjectives such as 'natural' and 'clear', while the windbreak trees was a consensus of all landscape adjectives. Only two adjectives, 'friendly' and 'wild', agreed on the dirt load, nine dum-bung(small pond), ten natural small river, nine duckery, eight one-storied houses, 10 pavilion, eight monoculture and diverse crops, and three natural waterways. The most common landscape adjectives were windbreak trees, pavilions, and natural small river, all 10 landscape adjectives. However, it is considered that only three of the 10 landscape types on the dirt road and the natural number are matched. Thus, additional management measures will be needed. In addition, it was analyzed that the most common landscape adjectives were "Artless" and "friendly" 13 times. The landscape adjectives of the organic farming complex responded by experts were analyzed to be suitable for natural, clear, zingy, silent, traditional, artless, friendly, wild and Leisurely, and consistent with the general public's opinion.

Development of Evaluation Dimensions regarding the Image of Clothing Materials (의류 소재의 이미지 평가 차원 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we classified adjectives to represent the image of clothing materials as the fundamental process for evaluation of the images on various fabrics and reviewed hierarchy and evaluation dimensions regarding the image of clothing materials. The adjectives to express the image of clothing materials were extracted from Fashion Magazine and Fashion Trend Book The similarity among adjectives was measured by pair-wise comparison without showing fabrics. From the result of the cluster analysis, 87 adjectives were finally extracted through the integrated processing of the adjectives with similar meaning and a close distance. Through the cluster analysis, the hierarchy of the clothing material images was examined. The clothing material images were classified into 12 primary sub-clusters such as ‘feminine', ‘warm', ‘neat', ‘classical', ‘pastoral.' ‘casual', ‘modern'. ‘ambiguous', ‘primitive', masculine', ‘abundant', and ‘arranged'. The dimensions evaluating the clothing material images were also developed using the multi-dimensional scaling method. A 4-dimensions and 8-axes system was established, which is composed of ‘masculine-feminine', ‘new-old', ‘casual-classical', and ‘ambiguous-arranged' images.

A Study on the Emotional Adjective Extraction and Subjective Evaluation of Sound Quality for Vehicle Power Seat (차량용 파워 시트 작동음의 감성 어휘 추출 및 주관적 음질 평가에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, emotional adjectives about the operating sound quality of the vehicle power seat are constructed, and the effectiveness of the emotional adjectives are verified by evaluating the operating sound quality. First, emotional adjectives were collected from the literature related to the automobile field and other sound qualities. A questionnaire was made using these adjectives. The questionnaire was designed to be able to select all adjectives that could express the operating noise of the power seat slide adjuster by applying the multiple- response method. Next, a subjective sound quality evaluation was conducted using the emotional adjectives. In the evaluation, we first recorded the operating noise for two power seats. Second, the subjective sound quality evaluation was performed on the recorded operating noise using a loudspeaker. Finally, through a statistical analysis on the sound quality evaluation results, the relationship between the semantic space and the preference score was verified, and the validity of the emotional adjectives was verified.

A Study on the Hierarchical Structure of Color Sensibility (색채 감성의 위계 구조에 대한 탐구)

  • Previous studies, while investigating factors of sensibility, had rarely considered its internal structure. This study hypothesized that sensibility had sensational aspects and emotional aspects and the former corresponded to objective adjectives, describing attributes of objects, and the latter to subjective adjectives, describing psychology of experiencers. Forty-three objective adjectives and 21 subjective adjectives describing color sensibility were selected both by a linguistic criterion and an empirical evaluation. Factor analysis on semantic differential responses to these two groups of adjectives resulted in 5 sensational factors and 3 emotional factors of color sensibility respectively. Hierarchical structure was derived by regressing emotional factor scores on sensational factor scores. In consequence, emotional aspects were interpreted by different combinations of sensational factors. Limitations and significance of this study were discussed.
