  • Steel-concrete-steel sandwich composite wall is composed of two external steel plates and infilled concrete core. Internal mechanical connectors are used to enhance the composite action between the two materials. In this paper, the compressive behavior of a novel sandwich composite wall was studied. The steel trusses were applied to connect the steel plates to the concrete core. Three short specimens with different truss spacings were tested under compressive loading. The boundary columns were not included. It was found that the failure of walls started from the buckling of steel plates and followed by the crushing of concrete. Global instability was not observed. It was also observed that the truss spacing has great influence on ultimate strength, buckling stress, ductility, strength index, lateral deflection, and strain distribution. Three modern codes were introduced to calculate the capacity of walls. The comparisons between test results and code predictions show that AISC 360 provides significant underestimations while Eurocode 4 and CECS 159 offer overestimated predictions.

  • The concept of Mingmen(命門) was originated from "Neijing(內經)" and "Nanjing(難經)", respectively meaning eye in "Neijing" and right kidney in "Nanjing". But the Mingmen theory had been developed on the basis of the concept of Mingmen in "Nanjing" thereafter, and it had been influenced by the Taoist alchemy in the process of explaining the relation between the concept of Xianghuo(相火) and Yuanqi(元氣). Out of this the Mingmen theory had been changed as a thing that comprises newly the concept of Huo(火), and consequentially the dispute about the arrangement between Mingmen and Xin(心) had been consistently progressed, because Xin is the center of Huo. And on the other hand, because Xin is also the center of mind, the influence of the state of Xin which is projected to Mingmen had also been discussed. Based on the facts like this, this study will discuss the possibility of the extension of the concept about the function of Mingmen. That is, this study will add up the concept of Mingmen in "Neijing" to the Mingmen theory so far, will add up the concept of Zhijue(知覺) to the Mingmen theory. The concept of Zhijue had been originated from the Neo-Confucianism in Song dynasty, and this study thinks, in the light of the concept of Zhijue, the concept of Mingmen could be viewed from a new perspective, that is, from a view of mind.

  • It is known that the stable protein 1 (SP1) detected in aspen plants remains soluble upon boiling and that sp1 expression in transgenic aspen is resistant to salt stress. Presently, we analyzed the effect of expression of SP1 in Arabidopsis thaliana plants and their response to high temperature stress. After $45^{\circ}C$ for 16 h, relative to wild type plants, sp1 transgenic plants exhibited stronger growth and were better in several physiological properties including chlorophyII, chlorophyII fluorescence, water content, proline content, and malondialdehyde content. These preliminarily results suggest that the over-expression of SP1 may notably enhance heat-tolerant level of transgenic A. thaliana plants.

  • An empirical and efficient method is presented for calculating the dynamic increase factor to amplify the applied loads on the affected bays of a steel frame structure with semi-rigid connections. The nonlinear static alternate path analysis is used to evaluate the dynamic responses. First, the polynomial models of the extended end plate and the top and seat connection are modified, and the proposed polynomial model of the flush end plate connection shows good agreement as compared with experimental results. Next, a beam model with nonlinear spring elements and plastic hinges is utilized to incorporate the combined effect of connection flexibility and material nonlinearity. A new step-by-step analysis procedure is established to obtain quickly the dynamic increase factor based on a combination of the pushdown analysis and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Finally, the modified dynamic increase factor equation, defined as a function of the maximum ratio value of energy demand to energy capacity of an affected beam, is derived by curve fitting data points generated by the different analysis cases with different column removal scenarios and five types of semi-rigid connections.

  • Sandwich composite wall consists of concrete core attached by two external steel faceplates. It combines the advantage of steel and concrete. The appropriate composite action between steel faceplate and concrete core is achieved by using adequate mechanical connectors. This research studied the compressive behavior of the sandwich composite walls using steel trusses to bond the steel faceplates to concrete infill. Four short specimens with different wall width and thickness of steel faceplate were designed and tested under axial compression. The test results were comprehensively evaluated in terms of failure modes, load versus axial and lateral deformation responses, resistance, stiffness, ductility, strength index, and strain distribution. The test results showed that all specimens exhibited high resistance and good ductility. Truss connectors offer better restraint to walls with thinner faceplates and smaller wall width. In addition, increasing faceplate thickness is more effective in improving the ultimate resistance and axial stiffness of the wall.

  • Flexible track drilling machines are credited with important applications in the area of aircraft manufacturing because of their portability, quick installation capabilities, and high efficiency. However, their structures are special and the constitution principles and motion characteristics are difficult to control, increasing the development costs and research cycle in the context of the technology blockade of foreign companies. The simulation analysis of flexible track drilling machines can be conducted by applying virtual prototypes, shortening the development cycle and reducing the cost. In this paper, a model of a machine is established by using the SolidWorks software and imported into ADAMS to conduct kinematic and dynamic simulation analysis. During the analysis, the feasibility of the configuration is checked, a reasonable driving motion is chosen, potential deficiencies are found, and improvement actions are raised.

  • Recently, metal-composite hybrid structures became a very attractive material system for various applications such as automobile and air vehicles due to their design flexibility as well as superior mechanical properties. On the other hand, recycling is a hot issue to reduce material wastes and environmental pollution, so that many countries made recycling regulations. But the recycling of metal-composite hybrid structures is not fully considered since the development and application are very early stage. We developed and optimized the recycling process for metal-composite hybrid structures based on the easy adaptation of the local recycling companies.

  • In urban vehicular edge computing (VEC) environments, one edge server always serves many task requests in its coverage which results in the resource-constrained problem. To resolve the problem and improve system utilization, we first design a general hierarchical resource management framework based on typical VEC network structures. Following the framework, a specific interacting protocol is also designed for our decision algorithm. Secondly, a greedy bidding-based multi-hop task scheduling decision algorithm is proposed to realize effective task scheduling in resource-constrained VEC environments. In this algorithm, the goal of maximizing system utility is modeled as an optimization problem with the constraints of task deadlines and available computing resources. Then, an auction mechanism named greedy bidding is used to match task requests to edge servers in the case of multiple hops to maximize the system utility. Simulation results show that our proposal can maximize the number of tasks served in resource constrained VEC networks and improve the system utility.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the prognostic value of serum CYFRA21-1, CEA and hemoglobin levels regarding long-term survival of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Methods: Age, gender, Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS), tumor location, tumor length, T stage, N stage and serum hemoglobin, and CYFRA21-1 and CEA levels before concurrent CRT were retrospectively investigated and related to outcome in 113 patients receiving 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin combined with radiotherapy for ESCC. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze prognosis, the log-rank to compare groups, the Cox proportional hazards model for multivariate analysis, and ROC curve analysis for assessment of predictive performance of biologic markers. Results: The median survival time was 20.1 months and the 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- year overall survival rates were 66.4%, 43.4%, 31.9% and 15.0%, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that factors associated with prognosis were KPS, tumor length, T-stage, N-stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level. Multivariate analysis showed T-stage, N-stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level were independent predictors of prognosis. By ROC curve, CYFRA21-1 and hemoglobin showed better predictive performance for OS than CEA (AUC= 0.791, 0.704, 0.545; P=0.000, 0.000, 0.409). Conclusions: Of all clinicopathological and molecular factors, T stage, N stage, hemoglobin, CYFRA21-1 and CEA level were independent predictors of prognosis for patients with ESCC treated with concurrent CRT. Among biomarkers, CYFRA21-1 and hemoglobin may have a better predictive potential than CEA for long-term outcomes.
